PATTERN INSTRUCTIONS: This pattern is written using American terminology and is worked in continuous rounds. The finished product using the materials described in this pattern from the top of Emmy-Lou’s head to her toes is 7.25 inches or 18.5 cm. SKILL LEVEL: Beginner MATERIALS REQUIRED (descriptions in brackets indicate those used in the pictured example):
7. Magic ring: Wrap yarn around fingers to form a loop. Insert hook through middle of loop. Pull working end of yarn through ring and chain the required number of stitches through. Pull the yarn ends to close the loop. 8. Single crochet (sc): Insert hook, yarn over, pull loop through stitch (there should be 2 loops on hook), yarn over, pull loop through both loops on hook. 9. Slip stitch (st): Insert hook, yarn over, pull loop through stitch and loop on hook.
1. Yarn (For Doll and Dress: cotton blend 8 ply by Patons in Linen/Beige and Cloud/Blue; For Hair: King Cole Big Value Chunky in Sahara) 2. Crochet hook in accordance with the yarn you use (2.5 mm) 3. Polyester fibrefill 4. Black plastic safety eyes (4.5 mm) 5. Black embroidery thread 6. Stitch markers, darning and embroidery needles 7. Hair elastic 8. Ribbon 9. Pink felt 10. Fabric glue ABBREVIATIONS: BLO = back loop only | ch = ch | dec = decrease | dc = double crochet | dc-inc = double crochet increase | hdc = half double crochet | inc = increase | rnd = round | sc = single crochet | sl st = slip stitch | st = stitch A very quick guide to the stitches used in this pattern in alphabetical order: 1. Chain (ch): Insert hook, yarn over, pull loop through loop on hook. 2. Decrease (dec): I prefer to use the “invisible” decrease. For this, insert hook into front loop of first stitch (from the front and under). Repeat into front loop of next stitch. Yarn over and pull loop through both loops on hook. 3. Double crochet (dc): Yarn over, insert hook, yarn over, pull loop through stitch (there should be 3 loops on hook), yarn over, pull loop through both loops left on hook (there should be 2 loops left on hook), yarn over, pull loop through remaining loop on hook. 4. Double crochet increase (dc-inc): Work two double crochets into the same stitch. 5. Half double crochet (hdc): Yarn over, insert hook, yarn over, pull loop through stitch (there should be 3 loops on hook), yarn over, pull loop through all three loops on the hook. 6. Increase (inc): Work two single crochets into the same stitch.

EMMY-LOU (cotton blend 8 ply by Patons yarn, 2.5 mm crochet hook) HEAD (in Linen/Beige)
STEP 3: Attach hair to head by first working around the marked hairline then filling in the middle. I attach the strands of hair as shown in Pictures 4-6.
Starting from the top Rnd 1: Start 7 sc in a magic ring [7] Rnd 2: Work 2 sc in each st around [14] Rnd 3: (Sc in next st, inc in next st) x 7 [21] Rnd 4: (Sc in each of next 2 st, inc in next st) x 7 [28] Rnd 5: (Sc in each of next 3 st, inc in next st) x 7 [35] Rnd 6: (Sc in each of next 4 st, inc in next st) x 7 [42] Rnd 7-16: Sc in each st around [42] Rnd 17: (Sc in each of next 5 st, dec) x 6 [36] Rnd 18: (Sc in each of next 4 st, dec) x 6 [30]
Picture 4. Insert crochet hook through stitch.
At this point, insert eyes between Rnd 12 and 13, 8 sts apart BUT do not fix the backs of the safety eyes as yet.
Picture 5. Pull yarn through the stitch with your crochet hook.
We will now affix Emmy-Lou’s hair (I used King Cole Big Value Chunky in Sahara for this example). STEP 1: Mark her hairline first with some cotton thread (shown in Pictures 1 and 2 in pink). The front hairline across the forehead falls between Rnd 7 and 8 and spans 14 sts. The back hairline across the back of the head falls between Rnd 14 and 15.
Picture 6. Once the yarn has been pulled through you should have two yarn tails on the outside.
Once you are happy with the placement of your hair strands, turn the head inside out. Pictures 7 and 8 give you an idea of how I placed my hair strands. As the King Cole Big Value Chunky yarn is quite thick and heavy, I didn’t put too many strands on the head. How many you add really depends on the thickness of yarn that you use.

STEP 2: Cut yarn to the length of hair that you wish to have for your own Emmy-Lou doll (Picture 3). Here, I cut lengths of yarn to a final length of 14.5” or 37 cm. I wind the yarn around a book, which is approximately half as wide as your desired length of hair, then make one cut of the yarn.
I do typically have at least two strands of yarn through each stitch hole along the hairline but reduce it to just one as I work my way in towards the middle of the head. To lighten the weight of the head following addition of the yarn, I also skip rows. Just as a tip, I always check how the hair looks “as a whole” as I go along to see if any gaps that may be visible are filled in.
Cut here ~half the length of your final desired hair length

STEP 4: Once all your strands of hair are placed, turn the head inside-out as seen in Picture 9 and use fabric glue to secure each strand of yarn to the head.
After Rnd 21, thread the tail through a needle. Weave the needle through the front loop of each of the 5 sts, always going in the direction from the centre and under the front loop. Pull the yarn tail and the hole should close. Insert the needle through the middle of the hole and pull through the head. Fasten off and weave the end in.
LEGS x 2 (in Linen/Beige) LEG 1 (LEFT LEG) Picture 9 When the glue is dry (I always leave it overnight), turn the head the right way out and your hair is now all attached! Now, just for some styling, but we will do that later…
With the hair attached and the head the right way out, next embroider some eyelashes with black embroidery thread as seen in Picture 10. Once you are happy with the position of the eyelashes, you can then secure the backs of the safety eyes.
Starting from the tips of the toes Rnd 1: Start 7 sc in a magic ring [7] Rnd 2-5: Sc in each st around [7] Rnd 6: Hdc in each of next 4 st, sl st in each of next 3 st [7] Rnd 7-19: Sc in each st around [7] Rnd 20: Sc in each st around. Sl st in next st. Fasten off and weave the end in [7] Stuff the legs lightly with fibrefill as you go along. LEG 2 (RIGHT LEG) Repeat as for LEG 1. However do not fasten off at the end of Rnd 20 as we will now continue into the body.
Next, using the same colour yarn as the head, sew on a little nose across 2 st between Rnd 13 and 14 of the head as seen in Picture 10.

Stuff the body firmly with fibrefill.
ARMS x 2 (in Linen/Beige) Starting from the tip of the arm Rnd 1: Start 6 sc in a magic ring [6] Rnd 2-18: Sc in each st around [6]
Sc into the same st after the ch3
Flatten the arm. Sc across both sides of the arm in each of the next 3 st to close the opening. Fasten off leaving a long tail for attaching each arm to the body. The arms do not need to be stuffed with fibrefill.

HAIR STYLING DRESS (in Cloud/Blue) Starting from the top
You can style Emmy-Lou’s hair into any of your favourite hairstyles! Here is how I pulled her hair into a dishevelled ponytail with side-sweeping fringe (Pictures 13 and 14)…
Ch 18. Join the ends to make a closed circle by making a sl st into the first ch st. Picture 13 For the dress, each sl st and ch st does not contribute to the final stitch count. I find it helps for the remaining rounds to use stitch markers to mark both the first and last stitches of each round. Rnd 1: Ch 2. Dc in the same st, dc in each of next 17 st. Sl st into the first dc of the rnd [18] Rnd 2: Ch 2. Dc in the same st, dc-inc in the next st, (dc in next st, dc-inc in next st) x 8 [27] Rnd 3: Sc into the first dc of Rnd 2, sc in each of next 2 st, ch 6 and skip the next 6 st in Rnd 2, sc in each of next 8 st, ch 6 and skip the next 6 st in Rnd 2, sc in each of next 4 st Sl st into the first sc of the rnd [27] Rnd 4: Ch 2. Dc in the same st, dc-inc in the next st, (dc in next st, dc-inc in next st) x 12, dc in next st. Sl st into the first dc of the rnd [40]
Using a strand of yarn that you used for the hair, tie together a few strands of yarn from the front to create a side-swept fringe later.
Picture 14 Pull the remainder of Emmy-Lou’s hair into a high ponytail. Loosen a few strands by pulling these gently to create some movement in her hair. Position the fringe from Picture 13 such that it sits as shown here and secure the hair with hair elastic.

ASSEMBLY 1. Attach the arms between Rnd 13 and 14 of the body, 6 st apart in the front. 2. Weave any loose tails from the dress in and slip the dress over the body and arms. 3. Sew the body to the head with whip stitches. 4. Cut out two circles of pink felt approximately 6 mm in diameter and use fabric glue to attach over Rnd 14 just outside the eyes for Emmy-Lou’s rosy cheeks. 5. Tie a hair ribbon around Emmy-Lou’s ponytail.
Your little Emmy-Lou is all done! We hope that you had fun making her… … We would love for you to share your creation with us!! (see how at start of pattern)
