Director's Notes

Little did Hans Christian Andersen know when he wrote his children’s story “The Little Mermaid” in Scandinavia in 1836, that it would still be celebrated in film and on the Broadway stage in the United States nearly 200 years later. Although there are definitely some “Disney” changes from the original story, many of Andersen’s themes remain intact. A mermaid dreams of living among humans, sacrifices all to make it happen, and finds true love. There Disney’s plot diverges from the original as Disney’s mermaid, as with all Disney princesses, gets her man! Andersen’s doesn’t get her man, but is given the opportunity for eternal life, according to the English translation of R. Nisbet Bain. Among the themes we have explored are selflessness, the parent/child relationship and the growth process that serves it, courage in the face of hardship, truly seeing the people around you, the opening of the heart to love, and so much more. For those of you who might not know, tonight’s show is presented by SCERA’s high-school performing team, Acting Up! This group of incredible kids audition to be in the group. They give up sleeping in almost every Saturday morning to come and rehearse at 7:30am. They also rehearse many nights for various projects such as this show! As part of our service to the community, Acting Up presents free musical firesides and outreach shows to audiences from Utah Valley to Salt Lake City. We also compete! Last year, Acting Up traveled to Fullerton, California where we competed in the advanced division of the Musical Theatre Competitions of America. We received the honor of placing 1st for our musical revue of Tom Kitt songs and 4th for our ensemble piece from the musical Footloose, competing against other top high school teams from across the nation. Seven trophies were also awarded to individual members of Acting Up for outstanding solo, duet and dance performances. Acting Up recently had two masterclasses from Disney director/choreographer Linda Love Simmons from Los Angeles, and will travel to Chicago this May for the CS Music Convention and Vocal Competition, where members of Acting Up will attend masterclasses, perform and receive scored evaluations, written feedback and are eligible for scholarships. I am always amazed at the insight, heart, and professionalism that these young performers bring to our Acting Up productions. A special “thank you” to all of our high school seniors! This will be their last year with us and we will miss you immensely. And to our amazing parents, we love you! So much credit goes to their generosity and patience as they have served the group by driving, feeding, helping plan parties, chaperoning, and generally just cheering us on. THANK YOU! If you know (or are!) a talented high school aged student, we will be holding auditions for our 2019-2020 season on Saturday, May 11 from 9am-4pm. Visit scera.org/actingup or email [email protected] for more information. There will be a pre-audition informational meeting for parents and kids on Saturday, May 4 @ 11:00am to see if Acting Up is the right fit for you. We’d love to see you there!
