Vorwort.. ............................................................................................ 26 Introduction....................................................................................... 27 lntroductie......................................................................................... 28

Manhattan was commissioned by the United States Army Band for their solo trumpet, Woodrow English, and first performed by them in Carnegie Hall, New York, in November 2003.

In addition to his position as Solo Trumpet with the US Army Band, Woody English, a talented and versatile player, is also a member of the US Army Brass Quintet and Principal Cornet of the Brass Band of Battle Creek, a professional brass band based in Michigan, USA, which is where he first met composer Philip Sparke. Wanting to write a piece that demonstrated both the lyrical and technical abilities of this outstanding player, Philip Sparke decided on a two-movement piece that could capture these qualities, with the intention that these movements could be played individually when a shorter solo is required. The 'theme' is a weekend in New York and the opening bluesy movement, Saturday Serenade, describes the city on a Saturday night, perhaps in a smoke-filled jazz bar. While writing Sunday Scherzo, the composer pictured an early morning jog in Central Park and this vivaciously rhythmic movement ends with an even quicker coda which brings the work to a brilliant close. Manhattan is available with concert band or brass band accompaniments: edition no AMP 060

Philip Sparke was born in London in 1951 and studied composition, trumpet and piano at the Royal College of Music, where he gained an ARCM. It was at the College that his interest writing instrumental music arose, alongside his compositions for concert band and brass band. He studied trumpet with Bob Walton who encouraged him to write his own studies for the instrument, as well as brass and wind chamber music for various student performing groups. His solo pieces for brass and woodwind instruments have appeared in the syllabuses of all the various UK examination boards and this led him to compiling scale books and being commissioned to write sight-reading exercises and recital pieces for the major syllabuses in the UK. He regularly adjudicates at music festivals around the UK and has travelled to most European countries, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and the USA He runs his own publishing company, Anglo Music Press, which he formed in May 2000. In September 2000 he was awarded the lies Medal of the Worshipful Company of Musicians for his services to brass bands.
