LEARNING

LET’S CONNECT! Get a peek behind the GH scenes (plus, supercute kitten pics!). @janeseymour francisco

Like anyone else, I’m not a fan of making mistakes, and I cringe at the idea of having to admit to one publicly. So it is with more than a wince that I confess an I-really-shouldhave-known-better error. In a recent issue of Good Housekeeping, we used the term for a mental health diagnosis, OCD, in a colloquial — and incorrect —  way. As a result, many people called us out, opening up about how it made them feel. Obsessive-compulsive disorder is not only a serious medical condition but also a real, daily struggle for those who live with it. I would like to personally apologize for furthering a misperception about OCD. It’s become too common for those of us who are unaffected to refer to certain behaviors as “being OCD.” And the reason it’s so important to share this experience is so we can all learn: Just because something seems innocuous doesn’t always mean it’s OK. At Good Housekeeping, we are committed to properly raising awareness of mental health issues, and this inaccuracy has hampered that mission. That’s why I’m so proud to present a beautifully written and heartfelt piece by Cecelia Scheeler, who openly and eloquently articulates the difficulties of living with this sometimes “invisible” disease (page 96). A few months ago, I had the privilege of hearing Cecelia speak, and I asked her if she would share her journey with us at GH. I’m thrilled that she accepted. As is my hope each time a woman welcomes us into her life on our pages, Cecelia’s story is a reminder that regardless of how different our individual experiences may be, there’s so much we can learn from one another.

BEAUT Y LAB

ASK APRIL

X APRIL FRANZINO B E AU T Y D I R E CTO R

@aprilfranzino

GH’s beauty guru has the answers to your look-gorgeous Q’s

I CAN’T SHAPE MY OWN BROWS. HELP! A : It’s tricky to even out

brows without overplucking. Jared Bailey, global brow expert for Benefit Cosmetics, has the secret:

Do I need to protect my hair from the sun?

Q

A : Yes! Hair, like skin, is susceptible to sun damage. “UV exposure can cause structural damage to strands by degrading proteins and can alter the color in as little as 20 minutes,” says Francesca J. Fusco, M.D., dermatologist for Dove DermaCare Scalp in New York City. “Protect hair’s outer layer with a hat or by combing it back into a bun so as little as possible is exposed, then coat strands and scalp with SPF.” Use a clear broadspectrum SPF 50+ spray for the easiest application.

I’m on a tight budget. What’s the best anti-aging product for my money?

FILL IT IN. Sketch your brow color in the “mapped” area from inner corners out. (GH pencil pick: IT Cosmetics Brow Power Waterproof Perfector, $24, Ulta.) PLUCK SPARINGLY. Holding skin taut, tweeze each stray hair between brows and beneath arches in the direction of growth. (Try Beauty Lab test winner Tweezerman Slant Tweezer, $23, Sephora.)

3 OF THE BEST ANTIAGERS

A : Good news: GH Beauty Lab tests have shown that some of the most effective products are also the most affordable. Pinpoint your top concern, then try one of these test winners, which have delivered among the best line-smoothing, firming and hydrating results the Lab has ever seen. Introducing even one anti-ager into your regimen — and using it daily! — can make your skin look more youthful now and over time.

ALL IN THE FAMILY

Gina and her parents, Regina and Terry, outside their mill.

E V E R Y D AY H E R O

Saving the Family Business Gina Locklear’s made-in-the-U.S.A. socks are helping a factory town get back on its feet

GROWING UP IN FORT PAYNE, AL, instilled a lifelong love of socks in Gina Locklear, 38, thanks to the multitude of hosiery mills that for decades supplied the area with a steady stream of good jobs. Her parents had their own mill, Emi-G Knitting (named for Gina and her sister, Emily), making plain white sport socks around the clock, and she often played happily in the boxes behind the factory. “My dad stayed at our mill until midnight most nights and started again at 5 A.M.,” says Gina. “His hard work really showed me what it takes to get a business off the ground.” Gina planned on joining the mill after she graduated from college in 2001, but by then, tough times had hit: Cheap overseas labor had drained the town of most of its manufacturing business, leaving many residents struggling. As mills began shutting down, people were forced to move elsewhere for work, and the town’s economy spiraled lower. “My parents were afraid,” says Gina. “The sock business was their world.” JULY 2017 G H

Quilty Feelings

An artist’s salute to soldiers who have made the ultimate sacrifice

TOEING THE LINE Left, Gina’s socks in production. Above, the fun, funky finished products are available at zkano.com and littleriversockmill.com.

Gina’s parents barely hung on to their mill while Gina held a variety of jobs and brainstormed ways to help her family and her town. In 2008, she had a lightbulb moment when she realized that she could blend her love of socks and community with her interest in green living, and her company Zkano was born. “I felt strongly that people would like organic-cotton socks that were U.S.A.-made,” says Gina. She pitched the concept to her parents, who hesitated at first, but Gina was confident that she was on the brink of something amazing — and she was right. Today, Gina employs 25 people on her Zkano and Little River Sock Mill lines, which operate out of the Emi-G mill. Her brightly colored and patterned socks are sold online and in more than 250 stores; sales have gone up 200% in the past year alone. Her success secrets:

BE THE BOSS Gina oversees production, vets designs, works on marketing and more. “I started these companies to create awareness about the importance of supporting U.S.A.-made products,” she says. She uses Texas-grown organic cotton that’s colored with environmentally friendly dyes in North Carolina, and the knitting, packaging and shipping are done in Alabama. “I saw the devastation that follows when jobs are outsourced overseas, and I’m proud to be doing this to support Fort Payne,” she says. ALWAYS LOOK AHEAD Next, Gina plans to launch her own boutique sock store in the mill, as both a retail outlet and a lure for tourists. “As we grow, we will be able to impact the community on a greater scale by offering more jobs,” says Gina. She’s doing her part to bring Fort Payne back to its glory days, one step at a time. — Alexis Reliford

Thousands of active members of the U.S. military have lost their lives since 2000, but New York City artist Rachael Dorr is doing what she can to comfort those left behind: hand-making unique, personal memorial quilts. She got the idea when she was asked on behalf of a family who had lost a soldier in Iraq to turn his Army uniform into a quilt. She agreed — and found her calling. In 2014, she founded Quilting a Memory (quiltingamemory.org), providing free services to families of fallen U.S. servicepeople. Rachel completes each quilt, which takes about 200 hours, alone. “I want my work to provide the sense of a hug, some warmth and comfort when a family remembers their loved one,” she says. — AR TRUE RED, WHITE AND BLUE Rachael also makes quilts to honor nonmilitary heroes. Here, one of two for a deceased firefighter's twins.

CLASS MOM by Laurie Gelman

My name is Jennifer Dixon and I have “volunteered” to be your class mom… since this is a thankless job, don’t expect warm fuzzy emails like you probably got in preschool. Wake up! You’re in kindergarten...and it’s time to face a few facts. So starts this funny, charming debut novel by former broadcaster Laurie Gelman, a veteran class mom herself. “I wrote it as a kind of post-traumatic stress therapy,” says Gelman. “The emails in the book are exactly like the ones I sent in real life.” With its appealing tone and a sweet mystery at its core, Class Mom offers up refreshingly likable characters in relatably goofy situations. Jennifer is the take-noprisoners class mom everybody loves — or loves to hate!

SAFE AND SOUND Aaron and Angel snuggle with Gianna, Vinnie and Rosalie. “Our love couldn’t be broken before, but it’s something else now,” says Aaron. “We’re so strong.”

I HAD TO WALK THROUGH FIRE for my kids” When Angel Fiorini’s dream home burst into flames while her family slept, she attempted the impossible to save her children. Then something magical happened by JONATHAN SMALL

On a Friday night in October 2016, Angel Fiorini snuggled into bed with two of her kids, Vinnie, 3, and Rosalie, 17 months. Nearby, 7-year-old Gianna slept soundly in her own bed. Their 2,600-square-foot home was undergoing a renovation, and the bedroom was one of the few almostfinished rooms in the house. Angel, a 32-year-old homemaker in Newman Lake, WA, was there alone with the children; their dad, Aaron, a flooring specialist, was out with friends. Like Angel, he was looking forward to celebrating their 15th anniversary the next day. Angel dozed off — and then suddenly awoke, gasping for air. Holding her chest while a “strange chemical smell” burned her nostrils, she rolled out of bed and

cracked open the door. “My heart dropped to my stomach — flames were blazing from floor to ceiling,” she says. Panicked, Angel scooped up Vinnie and Rosalie, thinking she’d come back for Gianna. “There was not a doubt in my mind that I’d be able to go back in and get her,” she says. She stumbled down the hall, eyes shut tight against the thick smoke. The fire had started on the other side of the single-story home, but was now roaring toward them, consuming everything in its path. Most of the walls weren’t up yet, so all that stood between Angel and the flames were bare wooden frames, crackling like firewood. The kids screamed as they tried to hide their faces from the heat. Angel, gasping for air, reached the front door — and JULY 2017 G H

Vinnie slipped to the hot ground and screamed again. “I dragged my babies on the ground by their arms into the front yard,” says Angel. The children cried hysterically, tears streaking their soot-blackened faces. Angel turned back to the house — half of it now burning with 20-foot orange flames. “There was an intense, crazy energy — like waves pushing me back,” says Angel. Smoke poured out the door, and the windows began to explode from the heat. Pop. Pop. Pop. Gianna, she thought. Gianna was still in the house.

W I L L M Y DAUG HTE R DIE ?

People in life-threatening situations talk about their lives flashing before their eyes, but it was the future that flickered through Angel’s brain like a time-lapse movie. “I saw myself standing outside doing nothing and questioning that for the rest of my life,” she says. “I had this rush of maternal strength — I would walk through fire for my children.” Running inside, she was hit with a wall of heat and smoke, far more intense than it had been just minutes before. She held her breath, closed her eyes and crawled through the rubble on her stomach. “I could feel the skin melting off my hands,” she says. Drops of molten

As I dragged my 7-yearold out, I whispered in her ear, ‘You are God’s gracious gift to Mommy.’

OUT OF THE ASHES A few mementos — including this photo of Gianna and her dad — survived, but everything else was lost in the fire.

gunk fell from the ceiling in excruciating little pricks, scalding her back and hair. Angel fumbled forward blindly, feeling along the wall. Suddenly, she found the opening to her bedroom and heard a small voice in the chaos. “Ma…” Gianna called out weakly. “If she hadn’t made that sound, I wouldn’t have found her so quickly,” says Angel. “I’m so proud of how strong she was.” “I pulled her down to the floor underneath me and dragged her out,” Angel says. “I whispered in her ear, ‘You are God’s gracious gift to Mommy.’ I don’t know if I said it to give her more courage or because I thought we weren’t going to make it out alive.” Parts of the house were now caving in around them. What had once been their kitchen was a full-fledged bonfire. Crawling through the smoke, Angel reached the front door. “The last thing I remember is putting my hand on that doorknob,” she says. “That’s when I passed out.”

BR AV IN G THE FL A MES

Matt Burson shouldn’t have been driving down Starr Road that night. “I hadn’t been on that street in four years,” he says. A nurse at a psychiatric ward, he was usually home in the evening with his four children. But he’d just worked

an extra shift after others had called in sick. And he was driving down Starr Road only because he’d offered a coworker a ride home. As he drove, Matt saw an orange glow, then the Fiorini home in flames. He hit the brakes — becoming a miracle rescuer in the midst of horror. A former fireman and ambulance worker, Matt was no stranger to emergencies. He ran to the six-foot fence surrounding the property and saw Vinnie, who had tried to crawl back into the house after Angel. “His feet were inside the door and his head out,” Matt says. “All I could think was, Where is Mom?” Matt kicked open the gate, grabbed Vinnie and set him down away from the house. Rosalie sat screaming nearby. His brain told him not to run into a burning building without equipment, but his heart had other ideas. “I couldn’t have lived with myself if I hadn’t,” he says. He inhaled deeply, dropped to his hands and knees and crawled straight into the inferno. Like Angel, he used his hands to feel along the scorching-hot walls, burning his fingertips. About eight feet in, he discovered Angel, unconscious. Her skin was charred black, and she was barely breathing. He reached under her arms and dragged her to safety.

I remember Gianna screaming, ‘It hurts, Mommy. It hurts so much!’ I sang to calm her down. THE CAREGIVER KEY As Angel clung to life in the hospital, her family stayed with her around the clock. Caregiving can give patients a critical edge in their recovery.

Back outside, Matt thought, Why was she in the house? “And I swear, right at that moment, Gianna let out a moan. It was like a sign from God.” He pulled his shirt over his head for protection and went in. “I found Gianna three feet from where Angel had been,” he says.

Aaron Fiorini was driving home when he received a text and pulled over to check it. This is an emergency. Call now. House burned down. All alive but wife is burned but talking. It was Matt. “I was shaking, hoping it was a wrong number,” says Aaron. “He told me to head straight to the hospital. I turned around and ran every red light.” Back at the house, Angel and Gianna had regained consciousness, and the children were shrieking in pain. “I have never seen suffering like that where there was nothing I could do,” says Stephanie Schurter, a neighbor. “Their skin was so badly burned that I couldn’t hug them, couldn’t wrap something around them.” Angel’s burns were excruciating, but she told herself to stay strong for the kids. “We both had black skin hanging off us like Silly Putty,” she says. “I remember Gianna screaming, ‘It hurts, Mommy. It hurts so much!’ I sang to her to calm her down.”

When the paramedics arrived, Matt told them to “tube” Angel to ventilate her. “From my history as a respiratory nurse, I thought her chance of survival was less than 5%,” he says. Angel and Gianna were airlifted to University of Washington School of Medicine’s Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, the regional burn center. Angel had burns on 43% of her body — her back, arms, hands and neck. Her inhalation injury was a four out of four, meaning she had severe injuries to her airways. For several days, she lay in the hospital breathing through a ventilator, her skin swollen and oozing, her arms suspended by nets from the ceiling. In another room, Gianna was doing a little better. Although she had suffered inhalation injuries, her burns were less severe. “They would have been much worse if she hadn’t been protected by her mother,” says Sam Arbabi, M.D., who tended to them in the hospital. Aaron and other family members held vigil by Angel’s bed 24 hours a day. A firefighting organization provided them with a small apartment nearby, and a friend quit her job to care for the kids. Then Angel suffered a major setback, developing bacterial pneumonia, sepsis and multiple organ failure and falling into a coma. “She was critically ill and in high danger of dying,” says Dr. Arbabi.

With the intensive medical intervention of a large team of surgeons and nurses as well as pharmaceutical and ventilation support, Angel pulled through and awoke 10 days later. She endured three skin graft surgeries, in which skin was taken from her thighs and literally stapled to her back and arms. Five weeks later, she was finally back with her family, staying in the cramped basement of her sister-in-law’s house. Although the Fiorinis lost nearly everything in the fire, the community support has been astonishing. A friend set up a GoFundMe campaign in their names that has raised over $30,000, a brewery raised an additional $15,000 HEALING AT HOME

Mother and daughter support each other on good and bad days.“Gianna means ‘God’s gracious gift,’ ” says Angel. “I feel so blessed.”

CARE FOR YOUR FAMILY HAPPY DAYS Left, Gianna celebrates her last morning in the hospital. Below, a kind stranger gave the family a much-needed new ride.

Protect not only your kids but also elderly adults (especially those with physical or cognitive issues) from a fire:

CHE CK S MOK E A L A RMS

Put them on all floors, including inside every bedroom and near all sleeping areas. Caregiver tip: Interconnect all your smoke alarms. Typically, when one sounds, they all will — giving you extra time to assist children or elderly adults. GH Institute pick: Nest Protect (2nd Generation) features voice alarms and alerts and notifies you when batteries are low. $119, NEST.COM

and a car dealership gave them a minivan. The kids got so many presents from local groups last Christmas that it took hours to open them all. And a family the Fiorinis had never met before gave them a mobile home. “It’s been beautiful to see people come together for a family in need,” Angel says. “I kept thinking, Why us? I still don’t know.”

FI NDIN G PE ACE

These days, the family is slowly settling into a routine. At first, Gianna struggled at school because other kids would ask about the fire and the scars on her chin and belly, but she’s gotten used to it. The internal wounds will take longer to heal. “Some days are worse than others,” Angel says. “She gets into a panic mode and doesn’t want to be away from me.” The family all sleep in the same bed now, one donated by a local resident. Angel doesn’t have nightmares, but for months she was awoken by terrible night sweats possibly related to her skin grafts. Her former dream house, nestled in a lush prairie near a snowcapped mountain, is a charred skeleton, its roof gone and everything covered in black ash. The fire inspector ruled the cause of the fire “undetermined,” but Angel believes it had something to do with two heaters

MAKE AN ESCA PE PL A N

that lay among the rubble. (On average, more than 6,000 fires occur every year in homes under construction or major renovation — often due to cooking or heating equipment.) On a recent visit, Angel reaches down and fishes out a photo of Aaron with Gianna when she was a toddler, its edges burned. “Oh my God. I’m keeping this,” she says. A few of their possessions were salvaged by a neighbor who combed through the rubble, but almost everything is ashes. “Sometimes there will be something that prompts a memory of the house,” says Angel, “but my family was so close to losing both of us. So putting that in perspective, what is stuff, really?” She credits her survival to her faith. “I have so much strength in God,” she says. “Sometimes I wonder if I need time to mourn all of this, but then that feeling passes. The real thing that matters is that we’re alive, and that we’re together.”

Practice an evacuation today with all family members. Caregiver tip: People with physical or cognitive disabilities should be included in drills; make a specific plan to assist those with limitations. Go to the websites of the National Fire Protection Association (nfpa .org) and the Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org) for more safety strategies for the elderly.

FI REPROOF YOUR K ITCHEN

Install safety knobs and activate the lock-out setting on the stove (if it has one) to keep kids and confused or forgetful adults from leaving burners on. Caregiver tip: Also secure all flammable liquids in a locked container in a cool, dry place — far from heat and combustible materials.

US E A L E RT ST ICK ERS Place them on windows and doors to notify firefighters of family members who may need more help to get out. A: It depends on how much effort you’re willing to put in. Wood tends to look better, but requires more care — ideally you should treat pieces once a year with a sealant to protect against the elements. Plastic, on the other hand, is not always as comfortable as other materials, but it’s far more durable. HELLO, GORGEOUS! The gleaming GH Kitchen of the Future Powered by Miele is our newest testing space.

I USED A GENTLE SCRUBBER ON MY STAINLESS STEEL FRIDGE. NOW IT HAS SMALL RUST-COLORED SPOTS WHERE I WIPED. IS IT RUINED? — Patricia S. A: Fortunately, no. The pad probably removed the refrigerator’s factoryapplied protective coating, exposing the metal underneath to air. Those surface spots are the result. To erase them, mix a paste of baking soda and water, then apply it with a soft cloth. Rub briskly in the direction of the metal’s grain; rinse and buff dry. After cleaning, use a stainlesssteel-appliance cleaner and polish (like GH Seal pick Weiman) regularly to keep rust spots at bay.

Q

My red blouse bleeds every time I wash it. Will soaking it in salt water or vinegar set the color?

A: We’ve tested both methods in the GH Cleaning Lab, and neither works. Colors bleed for two main reasons: extra dye or poor manufacturing. Dye is often added purposely to materials like dark blue denim so they’ll look richer and more appealing in the store. An item might bleed for a few washes and then stop. If a garment

releases dye with every wash, then it wasn’t properly manufactured; try returning it for a refund. Not possible? Wash it separately in cold water. Don’t rely on cloths that claim to trap small amounts of loose dye in the wash. Bottom line: For challenges like this, it’s still safest to wash the garment alone.

Your Wine

If you love a little antioxidantpacked vino, cheers to lower disease this — 5 oz. a day may help reduce odds of heart risk disease, type 2 diabetes, certain cancers and Alzheimer’s disease. But summer sipping is tricky: Hot weather plus the dehydration associated with alcohol can affect blood pressure and make you dizzy. Pro tip: Freeze your favorite wine in ice trays (about 1 oz. per cube), suggests GH Nutrition Director Jaclyn London, M.S., R.D. Then pop one or two into a light pour, which will make your glass last longer, or add a few cubes to sparkling water to keep you hydrated and hangover-free. Go easy, though, because more than 5 oz. a day is linked to increased disease risk.

Steer Clear of Zika You may not live in an area where Zika has hit, such as South Florida, but some researchers have predicted the virus will be more widespread this year. It’s especially important not to be bitten by mosquitoes if you may want to get pregnant: In 2016, the CDC found that one in 10 U.S. women with Zika who gave birth had a baby with birth defects. Your best bet? The repellent ingredients DEET and PMD (oil of lemon eucalyptus), according to new research from New Mexico State University. LAB LOWDOWN: Using a product with the right concentration of DEET is key, says GH Health, Beauty & Environmental Sciences Lab Director Birnur Aral, Ph.D. “According to the CDC, a minimum of 20% DEET is recommended,” she says. “Higher amounts are better for longer protection,” she adds, but at concentrations greater than around 50%, effectiveness time starts to level off. Sufficient concentrations of PMD are also key. Go to epa.gov /insect-repellents for a nifty search tool that will tell you which products work best against mosquitoes and/or ticks, and more. — Sara Bower

It can feel hard to get away, but women who took a vacation once every six years or less were almost eight times as likely to develop coronary artery disease or have a heart attack as those who took time off at least twice a year, researchers for the decades-long Framingham Heart Study found. And a recent American Psychological Association survey found that people who constantly checked their work email on their days off had significantly more stress — which is also bad for the heart — than those who did not. To make an even bigger move toward wellness, try a fitness vacation. You can find affordable retreats at GH partner dailyburn.com/fitnessgetaways. SNAP A SMILING SELFIE It’s easy to roll your eyes at people who seem addicted brain to their front-facing phone cameras, but they may be health on to something: A study in Psychology of Well-Being found that subjects who took at least one smiley selfie a day felt significantly happier. Your best personal trainer may have four legs: A report by the American Heart Association found that dog owners were more likely to engage in heart-healthy activity, because they got out and walked their dogs. Check out these amp-it-up tips from Adam Sanford, a personal trainer and the owner of Adam Sanford Fitness in New York City.

RUN ONE, WALK ONE. Budget time for a 30-minute walk and alternate between sprinting one block and walking the next. This will get your heart rate up.

TRY PARK BENCH–UPS. While your dog does his business, put your hands on a bench seat and do push-ups to tighten your arms and core. Too easy? Add a 30-second plank hold.

PLAY FITNESS FETCH. At a dog run or field, toss a ball; while your pooch runs to retrieve it, do jumping jacks or burpees. Repeat, and see which of you runs out of energy first! — AR

More than 9% of Americans have nutrition diabetes, and tens of millions more are on the cusp. But trading meat for protein found in plants (such as broccoli and avocados, nuts, seeds, pulses and whole grains) can help. One study found that even tiny swaps can help drop diabetes risk 18%! Fill up on plant-based protein at breakfast: “Choose omelets with veggies, spread avocado on 100% whole-grain bread or make plain oatmeal with unsweetened soy milk, nuts and berries,” says GH Nutrition Director Jaclyn London, M.S., R.D. Fiber and goodfor-you fats help reduce blood sugar spikes and cravings all day, she adds. — Nicole Saporita

BE LABEL-WISE

Shopping for someone with food allergies? Packaging labels can be majorly

food allergies confusing. Statements like “May contain peanuts” and “Manufactured in a facility

that also processes soy” are optional and voluntary, something only 54% of allergy-conscious consumers knew, according to a recent report. While “foods with one or more of the top eight allergens are legally required to provide a ‘Contains’ statement on the label,” says London, that does not mean there’s zero risk of cross-contamination. If you’re not sure about a certain food, call the manufacturer and ask. — Sarah Walter

HERE’S WHAT IT REALLY FEELS LIKE

to have OCD ...welcome to my brain”

DOGGED ADVOCATE Cecelia, with her dog, Chess, is on a mission to raise awareness.

by CECELIA SCHEELER

One of my earliest memories is of my mother massaging moisturizer into the raw skin of my red and bleeding hands, her palms dwarfing mine as she coated them in Lubriderm. She had just pulled me away from yet another hand-washing marathon. These were the early days of my obsessivecompulsive disorder (OCD), when an intense fear of germs compelled me to scrub my hands until they were the texture of steel wool. I remember trying to squirm out of my mother’s grip — the lotion she used burned where it seeped into the cracks in my skin. I was diagnosed when I was 4. That fear of contamination is a hallmark of OCD — the Wikipedia page for the disorder features an image of a man washing his hands — but intense germophobia represents only one form OCD can take. The only constants of this mental disorder are excessive and unreasonable thoughts that typically compel people with OCD to do the same thing over and over. I’m in the 1.2% of the adult population in this country that suffers from OCD, and over my long psychiatric history, I’ve experienced just about

96

G H JULY 2017

every type of symptom, from needing to perform certain physical activities (as a child, I had to bang my chair against the floor exactly eight times before sitting at my desk) to overchecking. These obsessions and compulsions don’t all bounce around in my mind at once, but there’s always at least a small battery of them firing away in my brain. Before I leave the house for work, I check that I’ve packed everything I need in my bag, that I’ve turned off all the lights, that I’ve taken my medication. OK, sure, everyone has experienced that feeling of dread that comes with not being able to remember whether he or she locked the door. But the difference between me and the average person is that I’m not satisfied until I’ve examined the deadbolt 12 times and made myself late for work. This is the essence of OCD: An obsession

(Did I lock the door behind me?) leads to a compulsion (I should check the lock just once more). I also have intrusive, unwanted thoughts — I imagine loved ones coming to harm, often by my own hand. I might be having a perfectly pleasant conversation with someone when suddenly I picture what that person would look like with a bloody nose. Such thoughts, which usually barge into my head about once a day, are never anything I’d do or a reflection of my desires; they’re simply the result of bad brain chemistry. Nowadays, my symptoms remain relatively consistent — most are ones I’ve dealt with for years. I have a full-time job at a nonprofit organization, which gives me the sort of stability that makes them manageable. As I was growing up, however, every month was an opportunity for an exciting new cerebral nightmare. In elementary school, it was all about contamination — I went through two laundry loads’ worth of towels per week on average, unable to touch one again after a single use. I couldn’t touch doorknobs or light switches bare-handed — instead, I learned to open doors with my feet. Every trip to the bathroom was a 30-minute handscrubbing ordeal. A cocktail of antianxiety drugs, SSRIs and other medications helped me cope…until I got to sixth grade. Middle school is a universally miserable time, of course. For most kids, the changes in body chemistry that accompany puberty mean acne, growth spurts and raging hormones, but for me they meant the medications that kept my worst symptoms at bay stopped working. Suddenly I was back to spending hours in the bathroom. In school, I erased my math worksheets until they had holes in them because I couldn’t abide stray

In middle school, I started making strange noises in the back of my throat and shaking out my limbs at random moments.

ALL CAUGHT UP Cecelia on a family trip to a historical theme park at age 4, the year she was diagnosed.

pencil marks. Ignoring them was like trying to ignore an intense, persistent itch — despite my best efforts, I’d be vibrating out of my skin with nervous energy until I finally gave in. And I developed compulsions I couldn’t connect to an underlying obsession. For instance, I started making strange noises in the back of my throat and shaking out my limbs at random moments. As can happen in middle school, my peers embraced the time-honored social convention of building themselves up by tearing other people down. When they passed me in the hallway, kids would flail their arms around to mock me and sneeringly call me nasty names from across the classroom. At first I tried to hide my condition, but that proved impossible, so instead I tried to explain mental illness to them. But I was working under the flawed assumption that understanding leads to empathy, which is rarely true for tweens. Maybe my classmates were unable to grasp the concept of an invisible illness, or they just didn’t care. But the grief they caused me only made me more determined to make people understand. Since I couldn’t hide my OCD, I decided I would make it impossible to ignore, and I started talking about it all the time. I even began using it as an icebreaker in conversation with new acquaintances — I felt I had to issue a disclaimer before strangers saw me wrinkling my nose and wondered if they’d forgotten to apply deodorant that morning. But even as I faced my classmates’ ridicule, it never occurred to me to feel ashamed of my illness. For as long as I could remember, the people whose opinions I valued — my parents, my grandparents, my psychiatrist — had told

Even as I faced my classmates’ ridicule, it never occurred to me to feel ashamed of my illness. me my OCD was not my fault, so when my peers tried to tell me otherwise, I didn’t shrink back in shame: I got angry, and I got loud. And I used pointed humor to shut people up, telling one boy who insisted my constant fidgeting was a willful act designed to annoy him that I was doing it to burn extra calories. High school was a big improvement over middle school: My fellow students were more mature and compassionate; I’d learned strategies to better manage my symptoms; and as I found that people were more willing to listen when I explained my condition, my jokes became less barbed. And in the years since, learning more about my OCD has helped me hone new techniques for managing it. Combined with a boatload of medication, this has helped enormously. It was only five years ago that I learned that my specific subtype of the disorder is called Tourettic OCD, which is why I sometimes feel compelled to do things, like make strange noises, that don’t seem connected to a particular obsession. These are actually tics: sudden, repetitive movements or sounds that I find really hard not to make. Most people think of Tourette syndrome as uncontrollable swearing, which is a real but rare symptom called coprolalia. But really, most of us just make weird sounds and flail a lot. OCD and Tourette syndrome often go hand in hand. As much as I’m not shy about my OCD, it’s a relief that my symptoms are far less noticeable than they once were. I’ve swapped out most of my more obnoxious tics for subtler behaviors — instead of pulling faces at my coworkers as I struggle to maintain

98

G H JULY 2017

control of my facial muscles, I’ll blink hard. A recent chest cold left me with a lingering cough that has become a verbal tic; I try to swallow hard or perform some other, quieter alternative. But there are still challenges I have to deal with every day, such as finding a combination of medications that solves more life problems than the side effects (such as low sex drive and lack of appetite) create. Nobody really knows why or how certain drugs help, and it’s daunting to be a human guinea pig: Every year I ingest thousands of milligrams of mind-altering, government-regulated substances, but that beats never, ever leaving my room. So, as with sampling new cuisine or getting hopelessly lost while backpacking in a foreign country, I suck it up and embrace the mystery as part of the experience. Tourettic OCD is not who I am, though it has definitely shaped a huge part of the person I’ve grown into. There’s a lot about myself that I love: I’m an excellent writer. I’m a thoughtful friend. I have a sharp and analytical mind. Those parts of me aren’t going to go away, and neither is my Tourettic OCD. And I can live with that. What I refuse to live with is stigma. So I will keep talking about it. The more I talk about OCD, the more people understand mental illness and the more they feel able to share their own problems. The more visible our conditions become, the less scary they are. And the more I talk, the less likely that some suffering kid will be told, as I was told, “It’s all in your head.”

NOT HIDING Cecelia in Japan. “It’s hard to miss normal when you’ve never known it,” says the author.

…AND A BAD RELATIONSHIP” Eileen Gonzales was determined to get a healthy, happy new start — her “revenge body” was just a bonus FOUR YEARS AGO, Eileen Gonzales and her live-in fiancé had a painful, ugly breakup. Eileen, now 36, grabbed her clothes and pets and moved out. “I got my own apartment and started over,” she says. “I had nothing — not even one piece of furniture.” Suddenly being on her own after five years was emotionally devastating and, in a practical sense, harder. “When you’re in a relationship, you share responsibilities,” says Eileen, a therapist in northern New Jersey. “Now I had to do everything for myself.” With one income, she couldn’t afford to eat out or order in like she used to with her ex — a habit that

had helped bring her weight up to 230 pounds on her 5' 4" frame. She started cooking for herself and prepping each day’s meals the night before. “I wasn’t initially trying to lose weight, but with those little changes, it started to happen,” she says. It was a welcome side effect of her heartbreak. She had gained 70 pounds during the half decade with her partner. “Now, looking back at it, I realize I was unhappy, so I was doing a lot of emotional eating,” Eileen says. “I think I stayed because I was in my 30s and it was just what you did: You had to get married; you had to have kids.” Within a year of the breakup, she

To help her out of her funk, Eileen’s therapist sent her to work out — for her spirit, not her body. “She made it my homework,” Eileen says. But the idea of going to a gym paralyzed her: “I didn’t want anybody to look at me, period, never mind having to wear workout clothes,” she says. Still, when she passed by an Orangetheory Fitness location at a shopping center, she forced herself to push open the door. “I walked in, and everybody was super friendly,” she says. Orangetheory Fitness offers upbeat, coach-led one-hour group workouts that are a mix of cardio, strength and highintensity interval training (HIIT; see box, next page). Eileen watched part of a class and, after determining that she wouldn’t bump into her ex there, signed up for a few sessions. After her first class, Eileen was sore and couldn’t walk for two days. “I was like, All right. Check. Done,” she says. “I had no intention of going back.” But a couple of days later, an email arrived from an Orangetheory staffer: Hey, Eileen, how’d you like the first class? I see you signed up for tonight. I’ll see you later. As someone who always kept appointments, she thought, Oh, no, they’ll notice I’m not there — now I have to go. She was greeted by the staffer and Margaret, her coach from the first class, who asked how she was feeling and if she had any questions. JULY 2017 G H

weight loss

“It felt like, These people aren’t in it just for the money. They care,” she says. Soon she was a regular at Margaret’s classes, and she’s been going four times a week for more than two years. RAMPING IT UP

Eileen says that while she couldn’t keep pace on the treadmill at first, “Margaret and my classmates encouraged me.” Slowly, she went from power-walking to jogging to running. The small victories felt good and improved her self-esteem. Eileen also started shedding pounds. “I was always at the mall because I kept needing to buy smaller pants,” she says. Newly motivated, Eileen started working with a nutritionist, who taught her about good protein sources like lean meats, nuts and cottage cheese and helped her cut out crackers and soda, which led to even more weight loss. The biggest change, though, was that she stopped eating emotionally — when she feels overwhelmed and has the urge to hit the vending machine, she takes a moment to check in with herself to see if she’s truly hungry. If not, she steps out for a walk or some deep breaths, finds a coworker to talk to or watches funny dog videos on YouTube. Eileen is now at a weight that makes her happy (168 pounds) and has discovered that she can deploy the same strength to get through emotional obstacles that she uses at the gym to get through physical ones. “The biggest gain isn’t my appearance,” she says. “It’s knowing I can handle a crisis. When I fall, I’m going to get up and try again until things get a little easier.” Even better, after completing some of the physical challenges she set out to do (she’s run a few 5Ks and done some difficult hikes), Eileen is free of the less-than-worthy feeling she had when her relationship ended. “I realized, I’m pretty awesome. I love myself. I can stop trying to prove it now,” she says. She’s dating again, but is in no hurry to settle down. As for that ex, she’d like to thank him, Eileen says wryly: “If we’d stayed together, I’d probably be even more overweight and wouldn’t have made the changes to get healthier. Now I know what it’s like to be happy with myself.”

Fat-Melting Magic You can burn more calories in less time with this cool cardio interval formula: Go all out for a few minutes at a nearly breathless pace, then “rest” by moving at a slower, less heart-pumping pace for an equal amount of time. THE SCIENCE: It’s called HIIT (high-intensity interval training) and has been shown to help with insulin sensitivity and cardiovascular health. Plus, it keeps you burning calories for hours after a workout. WHERE TO DO IT: Anywhere! Try alternating between sprints and walking on the treadmill, or visit orangetheoryfitness.com for a class near you.

Fried Green Tomatoes ReciTip: No need to bring out the deepfry thermometer. To test how hot the oil is, sprinkle a pinch of crumbs into it. If they just sink to the bottom, the oil is too cold. If they burn up right away, it’s too hot. If they sizzle and steadily turn golden brown, you’re good to go.

CELEB SPOTLIGHT

Ellen’s Gone to the Dogs The funny lady, pet mom to six, dishes on her fur-filled household and her new line of dog swag

GH: What is it about animals that

you enjoy so much? ELLEN: They offer unconditional love in ways humans can’t — plus, they don’t talk back. Unless you have one of those dogs who says, “I ruv you,” in which case, please videotape it and send it to my show. GH: What’s life like at your place? ELLEN: I have three dogs (Wolf, Augie and Kid) and three cats (Charlie, George and Chairman). I would tell you more about them, but like any celebrity parent, I think it’s important to keep them out of the press. Do I have a favorite? I couldn’t possibly answer that! It’s Charlie.

GH: Do you let your pets sleep

in bed with you?

ELLEN: It’s more like they let us sleep

in bed with them. Portia and I are allowed about one-third of the mattress, and they have the rest. I haven’t had a good night’s sleep since 1987. GH: What are your dreams for the future? ELLEN: My main hope is that someone brings their dog to the dog park wearing some of my collection and meets a stranger whose dog is also wearing my collection, and they fall in love, get married and live happily ever after. I don’t think that’s too much to ask. — Sara Bower

HOW TO GET A BETTER NIGHT’S SLEEP

Simple tricks for catching zzz’s even if your cat or dog wants to party all night TUCKER HIM OUT Felines especially are, well, night owls, so play with yours for at least 30 minutes before bed so he’ll expend energy. KEEP HER CLOSE Use a leash to tether your dog to your nightstand or bedpost. She won’t be able to jump up on the bed or rustle around, but will feel safe with you nearby. GIVE AN "A" FOR EFFORT Every time your pet sleeps in his own bed, reinforce the behavior with a yummy treat so he’ll stay put. — Alexis Reliford Sources: Adria Karlsson, animal behavior consultant at Dog Willing in Cambridge, MA; Brian Burton, cofounder of Instinct Dog Behavior & Training in New York City
