Greetings from Osprey! The first half of 2019 sees a potent mix of exciting books from new Osprey authors, as well as the return of some old favourites. Starting off the year we delve into Angus Konstam’s cut-and-thrust history of piracy with The Pirate World (page 1) and renowned weapons expert Mike Loades’ stunning new book War Bows (page 2). We have Thomas McKelvey Cleaver’s new Korean War title Holding the Line (page 3), William Shepherd’s long-awaited The Persian War (page 4) as well as two stunning large illustrated naval titles in The Cold War Fleet (page 6) and German Submarine U-1105 ‘Black Panther’ (page 7). Our two new aviation series Air Campaign and X-Planes are now fully in their stride, each hitting their tenth title in this catalogue, and continue to sell well. They have now joined our cohort of other established series, from Campaign and Men-at-Arms to Duel and Weapon, which all have a fantastic range of new titles coming out. You can find new books in all of these series between pages 12 and 21 in this catalogue, with a full stocklist of the span on page 32. February 2019 will see Osprey Games release Judge Dredd: The Cursed Earth (page 23), a brand-new card game based on the popular graphic novel series, whose game mechanics are based on those of Osprey’s best-selling title The Lost Expedition. Sticking with the sci-fi and fantasy theme, we also have Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell: A Game of English Magick (page 24) coming out in June, and a new expansion to Wildlands (page 25) in May. Hitler's Death The Case Against Conspiracy

Luke Daly-Groves

RELATED TITLES

A revealing look at the mysterious death and mythology behind the 20th century’s most destructive dictator. Did Hitler shoot himself in the Führerbunker or did he slip past the Soviets and escape to South America? For many years, conspiracy theorists have led much of the debate surrounding Hitler’s last days, while historians have argued over the limited forensic evidence. This book returns to the evidence of Hitler’s suicide in order to scrutinise the arguments of conspiracy theorists using scientific methods. Through analysis of recently declassified MI5 files, previously unpublished sketches of Hitler’s bunker, personal accounts of intelligence officers along with stories of shoot-outs, plunder and secret agents, this rigorously researched book takes on the doubters to tell the full story of how Hitler died – and where it happened.

The Persian War A military history

William Shepherd

RELATED TITLES

The enthralling story of the triumph of Greece over the mighty Persian Empire. The victory of a few Greek city-states over the world’s first superpower was an extraordinary military feat that secured the future of western civilization. This is the first book to bring together Herodotus’ entire narrative and interweave it with other ancient voices to present the original texts that comprise almost all that is known about this immense clash of arms.

The German Panzerartillerie was one of the key components of the Panzer divisions that overran most of Western Europe and reached as far as the gates of Moscow in the East. Drawing on original archival and private collection material, including some previously unpublished images, German armour expert Thomas Anderson expertly describes the formation and development of this force from its genesis, through the glory days of Blitzkrieg and on to its eventual decline in the face of the challenges of the Eastern Front.

Using descriptions from contemporary documents and writings, this concise book shows what it was like to go to sea at the time of Captain Cook and Admiral Nelson, from the military tactics that helped the Royal Navy rule the waves, the infamous ‘press gangs’ and severe punishments meted out for the slightest infractions, to tips on how to spot an impending mutiny or avoid the dreaded scurvy.

AIR CAMPAIGN

Each book contains:

Packed with artwork, maps and diagrams, the fascinating new Air Campaign series examines how the world’s greatest air wars have been fought. Analyzing the goals of the attacking air commander, the aircraft he had to work with, the opposing air defences, how he planned the attack and how the pilots actually fought it, this series sheds light on why air campaigns have been won and lost.

EVENTS 1. Alpha strike package from Carrier Air Wing 19 (CVW-19) aboard the USS Ticonderoga (CVA-14) approaches coast of North Vietnam, ingressing at 350kts at 20,000ft.

3. Alpha strike leader begins descent to roll-in altitude, jinking and weaving to confound gunners during descent. Alerted by radar warning receivers, Iron Hand sections begun hunting SAM radars, firing on four of them with Shrikes. TARCAP remains high and moves to outside to block MiGs from attacking strike forces. 4. Kep GCI orders MiG-17 flight, now at 10,000ft, to turn south and climb, positioning it to engage strike by attacking from astern – but the MiG attacks are frustrated by the F-8 TARCAP. 5. VA-192 A-4F and VF-194 F-8E strike package reaches 14,000ft roll-in point amid increasingly heavy conventional antiaircraft fire. The package rolls in on Kien An Airbase and drops its bombs at 4,500ft altitude, clearing the target within two minutes, and then climbs back to egress altitude. The Iron Hand and F-8 flak suppressors continue attacking SAM and AAA sites, and F-8 TARCAP frustrates the MiG-17s, which repeatedly attempt to engage strike force. 6. The strike package and escorts disengage, jinking, weaving and climbing to altitude. Iron Hand sections and TARCAP cover their egress and disengage last. 7. GCI vectors MiGs, now at 8,500ft, to return to Kep. They dodge through their own 85mm and 100mm antiaircraft fire. 8. Alpha strike is now all “feet wet” over the Gulf of Tonkin. USS Ticonderoga launches a single RF-8G (VFP-63 Det 14) plus a single F-8E (VF-191) escort to undertake post-strike low-level recce of target.

Supporting aircraft/ship: VAW-111 Det 14: E-1B AEW aircraft (keeping track of the evolving counterair battle picture) VAH-4 Det 14: two KA-3B tankers (to refuel returning aircraft) VAQ-33 Det 14: EA-1F (jamming North Vietnamese air defenses)

Hyper-reality. The area between the thriving mass of humanity known as the Sprawl and the digital refuge of Cyberspace. This is your playground. As a data-jack, you can see and manipulate the flow of digital data through the real world – for you, reality is limitless.

REALITY ' S EDGE CYBERPUNK SKIRMISH RULES Welcome to Reality’s Edge, a wargame so shiny you are going to need mirror shades. Set in a dystopian cyberpunk future, players take on the role of a data-jack, a mercenary hacker who leads a small team of trusted operatives and disposable freelancers. Funded by shadow backers, the datajacks accept jobs from faceless clients for profit, glory, and better chrome...always better chrome. Battles take place in the concrete jungle known as the Sprawl, but data-jacks must remain wary of the threat posed by Cyberspace. Hacking rules are pivotal to the game, with data nodes, robots, machines, and even enemy chrome presenting potential targets for a cunning data-jack. No-one plugged into Cyberspace is entirely safe from intrusion, and the electronic sprites and digital djinn you can deploy alongside your team can be just as dangerous as any mercenary or assassin. Gameplay focuses on individual characters, with each skirmish offering you the opportunity to earn experience and equipment for your data-jack and operatives. A wide range of items and upgrades are available, from advanced weaponry and synthetics through to cyber-implants, biological enhancements, clones, and much more. This is a world obsessed with whether something can be done, not whether it should.

RAGNAROK The end of the Aesir has come, but not as the prophecies foretold. The dread dragon Niddhoggr has devoured the roots of the World Ash, Yggdrasil, and the great tree has toppled onto its side, crashing the realms of mortal and supernatural together. With the gods dead and the fires of ruin consuming the world, your war clan of Viking warriors know what they must do to survive the destruction of the Nine Realms and restore order: they must become the new gods! Ragnarok is a campaign-driven skirmish game in which players form a Viking war clan seeking to prove itself worthy of becoming the new pantheon. The use of a mechanic called Godspark means that battles are no longer determined by merely striking an opponent and dealing damage. Instead, warriors will be pushing, throwing, and crashing their opponents around the battlefield, making their very environment a weapon. As the war clans develop, they may gain glorious new powers that will bring them closer to godhood, or win the respect of the denizens of the realms, allowing them to bring dire wolves, dwarves, and even the dreaded giants into their war clans. With strategic gameplay and epic storytelling, players must write their own sagas and tell of how their war clans have, through blood and steel, clawed their way up from ruin to stand before the halls of Valhalla.
