We hope that this catalogue finds you safe and well. 2020 has been a challenging year, to say the least, and while we can’t predict what 2021 will hold, we hope that our forthcoming selection of incredible titles will offer a wide range of engaging, inspiring and enjoyable reads for the months to come. For our naval enthusiasts we will be publishing Abandon Ship (p.1) by Paul Brown, which draws on recently declassified and previously unpublished reports to tell the full story of the sinkings of six British ships and an Argentinian cruiser during one of the pivotal events of 20th century British history, the Falklands War of 1982. In the first half of the year, we also have several fantastic new additions to our aviation list. In March we publish Korean Air War (p.1), a stunning, highly illustrated survey of this often overlooked conflict from ex-RAF pilot and acclaimed aviation historian, Michael Napier. In May, Thomas McKelvey Cleaver’s Under the Southern Cross (p.2) offers a vivid account of the Solomons and New Guinea campaigns which paved the way for Allied success in the Pacific War. In June, Luftwaffe Special Weapons 1942–45 (p.3) from aviation expert Robert Forsyth offers a fully illustrated study of the many different weapons types developed to help the Luftwaffe combat the overwhelming Allied material superiority in the air in the second half of World War II. This spring we are also publishing two new military history titles for anyone interested in early medieval British history: Never Greater Slaughter (p.2) and The Last Viking (p.3). From award-winning author Michael Livingston, Never Greater Slaughter tells the incredible story of the Battle of Brunanburh, one of the defining moments of English history. With a foreword and introduction by Bernard Cornwell, this groundbreaking study reveals details not only of the battle itself, but of the remarkable discovery of the battle site, over a thousand years after it witnessed history. Don Hollway’s The Last Viking, which publishes in June, offers a rich and compelling account of the life of King Harald ‘Hardrada’ of Norway, one of the greatest warriors ever to have lived. Transporting the reader from the frozen wastelands of Scandinavia to the battlefields of rural England, Hollway brings the true tale of this hero vividly to life. Finally, we are excited to unveil two brilliant new gift books designed to appeal to World War II enthusiasts, old and new. The Churchill Quiz Book (p.8) provides 800 fascinating questions on the colourful and controversial life of Britain’s wartime leader. With multiple choice questions, anagrams, pictures quizzes and more, there’s plenty of opportunity to test your knowledge! For our aviation aficionados, World War II Fighter Planes Spotter’s Guide (p.8) continues our Spotter’s Guide series with a beautifully illustrated introduction to some of history’s most iconic aircraft. In the last few pages of the catalogue you can see what Osprey Games will be releasing in the first half of 2021. For wargamers, the eagerly anticipated Stargrave from award-winning author Joseph A. McCullough will be published in April, with the best-selling World War II wargame Bolt Action also seeing two new additions to the series. Martin Wallace’s critically-acclaimed Wildlands will be expanded with The Ancients, while the new Imperium card games will see players lead some of the most powerful civilisations in history to glory, or to ruin. Finally, fans of the Osprey Roleplaying series will be delighted by our February release – Jackals: Bronze Age Fantasy Roleplaying.

Enjoy!

The Korean War (1950–53) holds a unique place in aviation history as a technological watershed in which the piston-engined aircraft of World War II yielded to the jet aircraft of modern times. In this meticulously researched new volume, Michael Napier unravels the complex narrative of events, and examines the air power of the major combatants and the diverse range of aircraft used throughout the conflict. Packed with a huge array of stunning contemporary images, this is a groundbreaking exploration of a much-forgotten conflict, which nevertheless provided many lessons about the organization and prosecution of modern aerial warfare that remain relevant today. Michael Napier is an experienced author with six published titles to his name, including The Royal Air Force: A Centenary of Operations published by Osprey. Michael is an ex-RAF Tornado pilot with combat experience over Iraq. He is thorough in his research and, because of his knowledge of air warfare, is highly qualified to write on the subject.

When Argentinian forces invaded the Falklands in April 1982, the British Government responded by despatching a task force to the Atlantic to wrest back control of the islands. The resulting war saw modern weapon systems tested in combat for the first time, to tragic effect. In the aftermath, official documents were released, but many were heavily censored, and others withheld altogether, so that a full understanding of those events could not be gained. Drawing from recently declassified and previously unpublished reports from the official inquiry, Dr Paul Brown details the true story behind the dramatic events that led to the loss of six British ships – HMS Antelope, Ardent, Coventry and Sheffield, RFA Sir Galahad and SS Atlantic Conveyor – as well as the controversial sinking of the Argentinian cruiser ARA General Belgrano by HMS Conqueror.

SPRING HIGHLIGHTS Never Greater Slaughter Brunanburh and the Birth of England Michael Livingston, with a foreword by Bernard Cornwell

RELATED TITLES

The Battle of Brunanburh is one of the most significant battles in the long history not just of England, but of the whole of the British Isles.

Available: May 2021 ISBN: 9781472849373 Price: £20 / US $28 / CAN $38 Period: Middle Ages Format: Hardback, 224 pages 16-page plate section in colour

Late in AD 937, four armies met in a place called Brunanburh. On one side stood the shield-wall of the expanding kingdom of the Anglo-Saxons. On the other side stood a remarkable alliance of the rival Viking and Celtic kings of Dublin, Scotland and Strathclyde, who had come together to destroy them once and for all. The stakes were no less than the survival of the dream that would become England. For centuries, the site of the Battle of Brunanburh has been lost, but after an extraordinary effort, uniting enthusiasts, historians, archaeologists, linguists, and other researchers, it may well have been found over a thousand years after its bloodied fields witnessed history. This book will detail the story of this remarkable discovery, why and how the battle happened, and, most importantly, who the men who fought and died at Brunanburh were.

To do so, you’re going to need to use ink cards, which provide you with the letters you’ll need to spell out words. However, you aren’t restricted to just the letter as written on the card – rotate a C to become a U, flip a T upside-down to read as an L, or perhaps combine a V and an I to make a Y!

FROM THE CREATOR OF FROSTGRAVE, JOSEPH A. McCULLOUGH

INCOMING TRANSMISSION... In a galaxy torn apart by the Last War, vast pirate fleets roam from system to system, robbing, extorting, and rounding up slaves. Any attempt to form any kind of central authority bigger than a city state is quickly and brutally crushed. In this dark time, the only way to survive is to stay small and inconspicuous. Amidst this chaos, however, thousands of independent crews manage to carry on their business. Smugglers, relic hunters, freedom fighters, and mercenaries roam the dead stars in small ships, scratching out a living any way they can…

In Stargrave, players take on the role of one of independent operators. Perhaps they are a cybernetic veteran of the Last War, a psion fleeing slavers, or a mystic warrior attempting to preserve ancient wisdom. Maybe they are a bounty hunter collecting blood money, a robotics expert pushing the bounds of current technology, or a biomorph bred in the genetanks of some forgotten laboratory. Once the players’ crews are assembled, they are ready to dive into a campaign. Over a series of games, their crews will have the chance to carry out a variety of missions – recovering lost technology, stealing data, freeing slaves, and fighting back against the pirate fleets. In time, as the crews gain experience, they will become more powerful and hire more talented specialists. The more they grow, however, the more likely it is that a pirate fleet will take note of their activities and come after them!
