COORDINATORS AND SUBORDINATORS Rewrite those sentences in which the clauses can be reversed with no other changes. For example, (1) cannot be rewritten as the result is unacceptable: *And they do so consciously, people everywhere make gestures. 1. People everywhere make gestures and they do so consciously. 2. People may wave to others to attract attention, or they may point at something to call attention to it. 3. So signalling is universal, but individual signals mean different things in different cultures. 4. We need to be aware of these differences, so that we don't offend people. 5. A signal may be perfectly friendly in one culture, yet the same signal may be rude in another. 6. Unconscious gestures can be even more revealing, for we do not censor our unconscious body language. 7. We are often unaware that we are gesturing, so that we don't realize that we are sending out signals. 8. A famous murderer, Dr Crippen, was brought to justice, because his girlfriend, Ethel le Neve unconsciously betrayed herself with her body language. 9. Crippen had killed his wife and was sailing to America with le Neve, when the captain of the ship realized who they were. 10. Ethel le Neve had feminine body language, although she was disguised as a man. 11. She always crossed her legs, whenever she sat down. 12. The captain was convinced that the couple were Crippen and le Neve. 13. The captain telegraphed the authorities, so the police were waiting for the ship's arrival in New York. 14. It was the first time that radio-telegraphy was used to catch a murderer. (Crippen was executed in 1910)
