eferencing her multiple careers: consultant; designer; muse; podcaster; writer and Instagram influencer with over a million followers, Camille Charrière describes herself as a multihyphenated person. Her infinite repertoire is something she explains is generational. “Like a lot of people of my age, I’ve adapted to the market, which probably didn’t allow us the linear career trajectories our parents had. So, instead, we’ve dabbled in lots of different areas. The benefit is that we are able to create a career for ourselves that is rich and allows us to work on various projects at the same time. I feel I can combine my writing and creative work really nicely – along with building an online platform via Instagram.” Scrolling through her carefully-curated feed (@camillecharriere), it’s hard to believe she hadn’t originally imagined a career in fashion. Instead, with the intention of becoming a lawyer, she completed seven years of study involving two master’s in law. However, those plans changed when, following her English boyfriend to London, she discovered she’d have to complete a conversion course to practise law in the UK. “When I first moved here, I walked everywhere for the first month, because I was saving up for a deposit on a flat. I certainly couldn’t afford to be a student for another two years, that was a very pragmatic decision.” Instead, she took a job in finance, under the premise it would help her later in life. “It was an absolute disaster. I get why some people love the adrenaline of numbers, but it’s for a certain type of brain that I don’t have. “It was the first time I’ve done something I hated, and I really didn’t like the environment – it was me plus nine men in the office and I was the youngest. I gave myself a year and quit „

exactly at that time, ending up with no job.” Having started a blog during her lunch break, Camille thought she’d try her luck in fashion, phoning her parents in France to tell them. “They were like, ‘Have you gone absolutely mad?’. Everyone thought I’d lost the plot, but about a month later, I landed a job at Net-a-porter, they gave me a shot and that was the start of where I am now.” Contrary to belief, Camille is not Parisian, she grew up in Versailles, which is around 20 kilometres south-west of the centre of Paris. “Yes, that’s a bit of a scoop, I’ve never lived in Paris,” she laughs. “I like people to think that and I let that rumour go… but if you ask the direct question, I’m not going to lie.” Her mum is an environmental scientist and her dad an engineer – when we ask if she was raised in a stylish home, she quickly quips, “The short answer is no!” adding, “My parents are not just uninterested in fashion, they actually think it’s the devil. No-one would spend more than 50 euros on an outfit. I’m the black sheep – I have very expensive taste, we don’t know where it’s come from,” she laughs. “My mum always says, ‘I don’t know where I got you’.” Evidently not inheriting mode from her parents, Camille found a way to teach herself how to dress. “I understood that clothes are a language, a way of expressing yourself, something that is a great conversation starter. They are a mood-lifter with transformative qualities and a way of evoking memories – I always remember an event by what I was wearing. So I become really attached to items.” She goes on to describe her household as eccentric, telling us they were only allowed to speak English, which may explain her accomplished received pronunciation. “My friends thought my house was an outlandish and bizarre place to visit, because my mum would refuse to talk to them in French, she’s half-English and speaks perfect French. “I still feel that, because I didn’t grow up or go to university in the UK, I lacked that experience of using English to develop myself as a person. I only spoke it with my parents, so I wasn’t able to play around with the language. We spent our time listening to Just William,” she says, of the traditional 20s children’s chronicles. Having a unique Anglo-French upbringing meant she has at times struggled with her identity. “I’ve never felt French or English, I’ve always been torn between two versions of myself. I’ve learnt to embrace both and not put myself in a box. It can be hard, especially with Brexit and Covid, where you’re told you have to stay in one place. It’s only now I realise how much I relied on the openness and fluidness between those two places, both geographically and culturally.” After seven years single, Camille now lives with her film producer fiance, François Larpin. “It’s been incredible, falling in love after so many years. I think the lockdown situation has been both good and bad for our relationship. It accelerates something that all couples fight against, which is the routine – that

can really be the killer or the fire in a relationship.” Camille admits she’s an over-sharer and meeting François has finally allowed her to reconnect the person she is offline, with who she is on. Meaning she feels free to write articles that are personal to her, something she was wary of doing while single. “If I ended up on a date and liked a guy, I didn’t want him to then go online and see that I was desperate to find a boyfriend and really struggling with my singledom,” she reasons. This openness resulted in a spike in her Instagram followers towards the end of last year, which helped her to reach a million. “My manager sent me a really nice cake spelling out ‘un million’, because we were always joking, when is it going to happen?” She tells us that London has her heart and she can’t see herself ever leaving. “The reason I’m absolutely head over heels in love with England is the people. They are unlike anywhere else in the world – they’re funny, open-minded and don’t take themselves too seriously; yet they’re prepared to push forward with really big conversations. “I watch what’s going on with the cultural scene here and all these incredible TV shows that are pushing the boundaries, like I May

Destroy You, It’s A Sin and Fleabag. There’s something about London that just feels so ahead of everywhere else.” Continuing to combine two cultures, Camille describes her style as an eclectic mix. “I’m French in the sense that I wear a lot of the same simple pieces, such as denim, big jackets or coats and white T-shirts, but I have an English desire to sometimes go really rogue and have fun with it – I don’t take my sense of style too seriously. “I’m not obsessed with the idea of always getting it right. I don’t mind if sometimes it looks a bit off, a little bit teenager, or a little bit too sexy. I think, on the contrary, what makes someone interesting is when they show up and wear something that no-one is expecting, which I don’t think happens in France.” Because she’s been honing her style for decades, she feels able to predict what could become a fashion disaster. “I’m old enough to know when I put something on that doesn’t feel like me, I know to take it off. I don’t believe in mistakes, or a fashion faux pas, as long as you own something. It’s about how it makes you feel, and if that is not yourself, that’s when you’ve made a mistake.” The first designer purchase Camille saved to buy was a Chanel Boy bag, “Chanel is big dogs, „

you have to work your way up to get there,” she affirms. The French fashion house often appears on her Instagram feed and she describes its pieces as “absolutely timeless” and asserts she’d never part ways with anything she owns by them. “Chanel has so many classics that you want to own, and you know if you invest in one you’ll be wearing it for the rest of your life; passing it down to your daughter who will be so happy to have it. “My white 11.12 bag is one of the pieces in my wardrobe I reach for the most. It’s timeless and isn’t too dressy when you want to look a little more effortless. It’s perfect for summer, because it looks incredible with bare legs, but also adds such an unexpected twist to a winter outfit. The best part of it is you can style Chanel with anything. When you take every piece separately they become completely magical.” Apart from Chanel, Camille operates a strict one-in one-out wardrobe policy. She’s a self-confessed addict to “owning new things” and moving things on balances that out. “I think it’s fine to see the value in owning beautiful things, looking after them and loving them. It only becomes a problem when you’re constantly after the next hit – that rush you have when you buy something new. That’s why I force myself to decide if I really need something, which also means that I’m giving back and keeping nice pieces in the circular economy. And I always make sure that, if I’m giving something away, it’s not old and used.” She shares a similar lilt when it comes to interiors. “I have a lot of vintage places on my bookmarks. I tend not to buy from furniture chains. Not because I’m worried about having the same as everyone else, but I think those things become disposable really quickly. “I’ll go to Sunbury Antiques at Kempton Park market, it’s incredible for finding a really good deal. I went the week before moving into my flat and bought what we needed, coffee tables, chairs – everything. Then, as we found time to go to different antique stores around the world, we’ve updated and resold those items, so they can go to another home.” Of course, lockdown has meant spending much more time at her Ladbroke Grove flat, something that Camille has embraced. “It’s completely changed me and allowed me to appreciate home – the place I was always running away from, probably because I was single for so long. I was constantly on the go, especially working in an industry where there’s always something going on somewhere. “Creating a life for myself in my own community has made me feel more grounded and much happier than I was jetting off to a different location with new people, and it’s made me understand that actually living at a slower pace allows you to do a lot more. “Not necessarily things that you would tick off as huge accomplishments, but it means that you do them completely wholeheartedly. I’m now giving a lot more value to all the little events that make up my day and

appreciating each moment – and that’s something that I don’t think I’d felt if lockdown hadn’t cut my wings, forcing me to stay put.” The pandemic has also had a huge effect on the fashion industry, with shows moving to a more digital format. “I think having experienced both, it’s incomparable,” she tells us. “Brands sharing their collections through one-dimensional videos doesn’t hit as hard as actually being there. The whole magic of fashion is being together and seeing the movement of garments on a model. The great thing about clothes is that – hopefully – they look better in person than they do in an image. And, unfortunately, when designers are designing to stand out digitally, they have to be much more shouty in their design. “I’m not saying that means we have to stick to the original format, but it doesn’t mean that there’s not a new system. And because of all the incredible people that work in fashion, it can always reinvent itself. So that’s where we all need to put our heads together and think of new ways of sharing.” ■ Go to hellofashion.com to watch our cover shoot video

CINDERELLA MOMENT Comfort is key, explains Edgardo Osorio, who founded Aquazzura after a summer attending 11 weddings. Having noticed most women complained about their shoes, he started to create beautiful heels for special occasions and advises brides to “buy more than one shoe”. Opt for your dream heel for the ceremony and then something lower, or with a platform, for dancing the night away.

DREAM DRESS

Couples planning intimate ceremonies are elevating their dinner table styling by layering dinnerware in beautiful stacks – a trick favoured by tablescape aficionados – but trickier to do with larger weddings. “The design focus has really shifted from just having one charger plate, to creating different combinations of textures, colours and stacking dinnerware, giving an opportunity to create a really individual look,” says the creative director at Duchess & Butler. duchessandbutler.com

Many designers are moving away from making dresses for the ‘archetypal bride’, instead shifting their focus to cater for different women with different needs. Whether that’s a showstopping ballgown, a modern mini-dress or a lowkey jumpsuit, current brides will find themselves much more spoilt for choice. Viktor & Rolf’s SS21 bridal collection showcased an emphasis on softer, fluid silhouettes for what they describe as “luxury bridalwear with a fashion edge”.

CITY BRIDE From micro weddings to chic intimate celebrations – or even for a change of outfit for the post-nuptials after-party – brides-to-be are increasingly looking for more informal options to say their “I do’s”. Cue designers including Erdem, Reformation and Rixo, who’ve all created off-the-peg instantly shoppable bridal collections, allowing brides to try (and twirl in) dresses in the comfort of their own home.

“There’s a transformative power in wearing a piece of beautiful lingerie and how it can make you feel – whether it’s for the moments ahead of the wedding, or worn underneath the bridal look,” explains Sameera Hassan, chief marketing officer at La Perla. Investment pieces made to stand the test of time, crafted from exquisite laces, silks and artisanal embroidery, will be treasured for a lifetime and worn well beyond the big day.

LOVER’S GLOW “Less is more for effortlessly chic and modern bridal make-up, with an emphasis on beautifully-lit skin,” make-up artist Sophie Higginson tells HFM. Lip tints are a bride’s best friend, elevating the natural tone with a subtle wash of colour for that just-beenkissed look. “Victoria Beckham’s Bitten Lip Tint is my go-to, as it’s universally flattering and with serious staying power.” bridebysophiehigginson.co.uk

BLOSSOMY BAKES Naked cakes, with their layers of sponge adorned with foliage, fresh flowers and cascading ripe fruits are a summer favourite. But for those looking for an all-yearround showstopper with a twist, look to edible flowers. Gone are the layers of icing that come with traditional tiers, paving the way for dried blooms inspired by wildflower meadows, pressed into crowd-pleasing buttercream. blushingcook.com

MARY KATRANTZOU Best known for her digital prints, Central Saint Martins alumni Mary Katrantzou has partnered with Bulgari to create a limitededition handbag collection. The Greek-born designer has sprinkled her world of prints and kaleidoscope artistry, resulting in an exciting take on the iconic Serpenti bag. HFM caught up with Mary to find out more…

What made this collaboration a perfect fit? Having already collaborated with Bulgari high jewellery for my first couture show, we both felt a strong synergy in our brand DNAs and a mutual appreciation. I discovered that its founder, Sotirios Boulgaris, was a Greek silversmith before moving to Rome, so its Roman-Greek roots made the story of our collaboration even more personal. Having the opportunity to bring a new perspective to its accessories is something I embraced fully and feel very proud of. Which is your favourite piece from the collaboration? The first idea that came to my mind after visiting the Bulgari archive in Rome was to turn one of its most iconic symbols, the Serpenti head, into a minaudière [bag]. When they told me it would be a Bulgari first, I felt we can create something truly unique for the accessories. Inspired by a 60s Serpenti watch, we stayed true to the watch design, from the silhouette of the head, down to the opening mechanism of the snake’s tongue. I feel that the Bulgari woman and our women have a lot in common. They are strong, daring and elegant and share an appreciation for design. The Serpenti bag is now iconic – was it exciting or daunting to turn it into something with your distinct design? The Serpenti, to me, is a symbol of femininity, transformation and rebirth. The snake sheds

its skin to allow for growth. This concept fascinates me and the journey of evolution became the centre point of the designs. We focused on three elements of the snake, but highlighted them in a way that is new to accessories: the snakehead, which became the shape of our minaudière; the body, which became a handle for our Serpenti top-handle bag and a unique artwork created for the Serpenti Forever bag based on the idea of metamorphosis. This collaboration brings together some amazing females in the industry, including Natalia Vodianova as the campaign’s face. Who empowers and inspires you? Once we decided that the theme of the collection would be metamorphosis, I felt the campaign also needs to be centred around a woman who embodies the notions of femininity, evolution and rebirth. I immediately knew Natalia had to be the face. We both felt it would be wonderful to also partner with her charity, the Naked Heart Foundation, to support its cause and communicate with our collaboration about the power of design to be meaningful. Her grace, generosity of spirit and compassion embodied all the values Bulgari and I stand for. She is a mother, a wife, an entrepreneur and a philanthropist, and to me that’s the face of strength. How do you think the landscape of fashion is changing? Those in fashion must look forward and think of our role and purpose in using our vision to create positive change globally. I’m proud to be able to collaborate with Bulgari, who have long embraced the values that our industry should stand for. The future of fashion is built on the idea of collaboration and the synergy between creative minds and our collaboration was built on this exact foundation.

FUTURE

THINKER Changing fashion to be a force for good in the world, designer Bethany Williams is making sure her clothes are not just another label Words B E C K Y D O N A L D S O N

ethany Williams is one of fashion’s new generation of future thinkers. By assessing her imprint on people and the planet, she starts each collection from an ethical and ecological place, rather than seeking out ways to tick boxes along the way. The designer then extends this mantra through the design, production and presentation of her collections. For Bethany, actions really do speak louder than words, and imagining fashion as inclusive and a support tool, she tells us, “I’ve always been interested in art or creative work having an impact outside itself. And it being a positive force, because the power of making and how that has empowered me is incredible”. The acts of goodwill at the core of Bethany’s brand won her the Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design at London Fashion Week 2019 – a particularly big year for the designer. It also saw her win the British Emerging Talent Menswear award at the British Fashion Awards, make the final round of the LVMH Prize – and be invited by Naomi Campbell to the Arise Fashion Week in Lagos. The following year, the pandemic took hold and forced her to slow down. “I think I was close to burning out. There was so much going on – it was one thing after the next; and I didn’t have time to think or plan,” she says. “Last year I was able to focus on my business structure. And we’re taking on more staff – we have an accountant, a financial adviser and a lawyer. I’ve also learnt to say no to things, before I was like, ‘Yeah, yeah, yeah!’” For her SS21 collection, entitled All Our Children, Bethany continued her support of the Magpie Project, a London-based charity for immigrant women and children. She created a drawing workshop within the community, and artist Melissa Kitty Jarram made patterns and prints from the art, which became part of the collection – 20% of the profits go back to the charity. And, this London Fashion Week, she produced a gender-neutral coat collection exclusively for Selfridges. “The Women’s Institute community creates a personal blanket for every baby born into the Magpie family. A blanket is so much more than a piece of fabric, it is a feeling of comfort and shelter, and I wanted that feeling to be at the heart of this capsule collection.” Using fashion to educate and foster skills for people to create employment, Bethany has supported Making For Change since her brand launched in 2017. This is a fashion training and manufacturing unit within HMP Downview women’s prison. The project, initiated by the London College of Fashion in 2014, aims to reduce reoffending. “The program is really successful and because it happens over a three-year period, we’re now seeing the women I started with graduate and go into work, which is incredible. They’ve opened a secondary site in Poplar [the same building as her studio] for women to continue their training or paid employment once they’re released. And we’ve started taking on women that have finished the program as in-house sample machinists.” Another social enterprise she bolsters is the San Patrignano Community, a drug rehabilitation centre in Italy. “They make our hand-woven materials from waste products. Recently, we’ve also worked with the Knit Social Project called Manusa, an initiative to teach and create jobs in knitwear and crochet.” In contrast to her predecessors, Bethany will only sponsor paid internships; as well as actively sharing

Balmy days call for a richer colour palette, so I’ll be pairing a flirty summer dress in orange with a carry-anywhere raffia tote. Wear with layered dainty gold necklaces and your favourite flat sandals for daytime and add a trophy jacket for drinks at night. I’ll either be sunbathing on a great British beach or somewhere more far-flung this summer, so I’m planning to invest in some new swimwear. The asymmetric neckline on this bikini top adds standout appeal, coupled with its striking monochrome print. Accessorise with your best golden tan (fresh from a bottle of course!). 48

The British weather is so unpredictable that I never go anywhere without a lightweight jacket. With its tie waist, crew neck and pockets, this one has a sports-luxe feel and is both practical and chic. A midi-length pleated skirt can be dressed up with a heel, like these versatile white mules, or look equally as cool when styled with a pair of white trainers. Pink is undoubtedly the colour of the season, but this skirt will definitely go the distance when paired with a hero knit and boots come autumn. aving spent last summer heavily pregnant and glued to a fan in a criminally-hot London town, I’m so excited about wearing all of my sunny wardrobe favourites that I couldn’t fit into last year. Top of the list will be my watermelon, dream of a Levinia Konyalian cotton dress (above) – perfect for keeping cool in the heat without compromising on style. Another brand I look forward to wearing now the days are infinitely brighter is the eco-conscious Nobody’s Child, whose zero-waste capsule collections, at surprisingly accessible prices, literally fly off its digital shelves. The versatile printed separates and timeless floral dresses are made from an eco-responsible alternative to viscose, as well as rescued materials, which means the range uses less water and emits fewer greenhouse gases to contribute to a cleaner environment.

Dresses aside, after a year spent predominantly in Birkenstocks and slippers, I deservedly feel the need to treat ma’feet, and I will look no further than Gucci’s Houdan horsebit-detailed leather platform mules. This iconic style is made in Italy from chrome-free tanned leather for lower environmental impact, and I will play up their retro style by pairing them with flared jeans and vintage tees. Likewise, it’s out with the maternity underwear and back in with the prettiest of summer lingerie, thanks to the sustainable, family-run brand Dora Larsen – the brand on every influencer’s lips (or, um, hips…). These comfortable styles in the most unexpected colour combinations are fashioned from recycled lace and organic Oeko-Tex-certified cotton, with any pieces left unsold being donated to the Scottish charity Smalls For All. L U X U R I OUS LIMBS We hear you, baring your skin after months of knitwear and tights can be overwhelming. Try mixing a few drops of your foundation in with your body cream to create an even skin tone. We love the hydrating formula of Guerlain L’Essentiel High-Perfection, which has the prettiest luminous finish. “Take your bronzer over all raised points – think shoulders and decolletage – for a healthy tint of colour,” says shoot make-up artist Ruby Hammer.

The beauty mood is minimal this season, with fewer layers, less products and all of the focus on glowing skin, relaxed waves and tawny lips

MODERN MERMAID “This is your typical beachy wave, but with a more refined finish,” says shoot hairstylist Chad Maxwell. “Tong sections of hair, but don’t ruffle or shake the waves out with your fingers, keep them nice and complete.” To add another luxe element, Chad spritzed a high-shine spray onto the roots, lengths and ends. “If you want to switch this look into an updo, gather your hair into a low ponytail and secure at the nape of your neck – so the waves still drape down your back.”

RADIANT SKIN Not exactly breaking news, but you need a bronzer in your arsenal, and you need generous strokes to lend a light-catching glow. “Start on the highest point of your cheekbones and take it down onto your cheek and brow bones, over your eyelids, up onto your temples and don’t be scared to run the brush over your T-zone to control excess shine and add extra warmth,” says Ruby, who used Guerlain Terracotta Nude Glow Powder.

Remember the tawny-nude lip colour of the 90s? Well, it’s back, and we saw it everywhere – Jason Wu, Anna Sui, Burberry, Mark Fast and Valentino, to name but a few. “This is such a great lip colour for summer, as it requires zero maintenance,” says Ruby. We can’t stop applying Guerlain KissKiss Shine Bloom in Lily Caress, it’s officially the shade of the summer. Plus, it contains 95% naturally-derived, lip-caring ingredients.

Anything that makes us look less tired in the mornings is a welcome addition to our make-up bag. Mix a drop of Pai Skincare The Impossible Glow Hyaluronic Acid & Sea Kelp Bronzing Drops, £29 (left), into your moisturiser for a sun-warmed complexion, or dot across cheekbones for extra luminosity.

We all know to reapply SPF. According to consultant dermatologist, Dr Justine Kluk: “You should top up your protection every two hours between April and September.” But it doesn’t need to be painstaking or ruin your make-up. Garnier has rebranded its much-loved face spritz to Ambre Solaire Over Makeup Super UV Protection Mist SPF 50, £10 (above) – because you can spray it over make-up. It’s invisible, non-greasy and uses hyaluronic acid, so your skin won’t feel parched.

enowned for its remarkable ability to retain moisture, hyaluronic acid can plump and soften wrinkles, as well as help skin to repair itself more quickly. Known for being able to hold up to a thousand times its own weight in water, this hero ingredient gives skin an instant moisture boost, making it an excellent quick fix, as well as an everyday essential for sustaining a healthy barrier function. Now Japan’s number one-selling skincare line, Hada Labo Tokyo, is introducing three new moisturisers alongside its cult Super Hydrator Lotion. Acting like a drink of water for your skin, the products contain a variety of hyaluronic acid molecules, from large to nano-sized, to offer multiple layers of hydration. Choose the Anti-Aging Day Cream, with added retinol and collagen, to firm and improve elasticity, or the Wrinkle Filler Cream to refresh and smooth; each with four different sizes of hyaluronic acid. For more effective beauty sleep, the regenerating complex of peptides and collagen in the Repair Night Cream will nourish and hydrate. Each of these can be applied after the Super Hydrator Lotion – think of them as your liquid assets.

W

hile a career in fashion often requires playing infinite roles, Blanca Miró is one of the industry’s true multitaskers. The influencer and entrepreneur, who says she “lives for fashion”, is also a brand consultant, as well as co-founder and fashion director of clothing brand La Veste and online members-only e-commerce business Vasquiat. Here, the colourful and eclectic trailblazer invites us into her chic Barcelona home. Seeing fashion and interiors as indivisible, she tells us, “Everything to do with aesthetics is related. Someone who likes dressing themselves and fashion will enjoy interior design. And they’ll also enjoy going to art galleries and everything that’s visual or style-based. I’m someone who goes through life looking into every little corner and I see beauty in even the most ordinary stuff”. And so her apartment is as original as she is. She says, “It’s a home with a fresh feel, loads of vibrant colour and little gadgets placed everywhere. It’s a playful house”. Her favourite piece of furniture is a red Soriana sofa she bought from Tobia Scarpa that sits proudly in the living room. “I found it in Empordà here in Catalonia, which is a place I love visiting. I used to go there a lot with my parents when I was little. I did have to think for a few days about whether to make the purchase, but something told me it had my name on it. It may not be the thing I use most, but I know it’s there – and sometimes I just sit and look at it because I love it.” The spacious living room, which is full of light thanks to the large French windows on to the balcony, has multi-coloured antique floor tiles, and the shades are picked up in the modern artworks on the walls. Because for Blanca it is all in the detail, everything, down to her vintage Japanese bike, which is very precious to her because it belonged to her father, is a stylish accessory; as is a table light made with a remnant of an old Fendi fabric. Blanca’s beloved French bulldog Lui’s cushion is aptly placed below a hatstand full of berets. When friends come round, she loves to experiment with tablescapes on her brassedged dining table, mixing chunky plates with delicate glassware and quirky ornaments like a gold palm tree from Rue Vintage 74. It is easy to see that Blanca wasn’t too

regimented in planning out the final look of the apartment. “I didn’t start out with any definite aims. I let myself be guided by whatever I wanted to put in it at the time, especially objects I bought on my travels. I had no idea how it would all work out, it was quite an organic, natural process. I just knew there would be lots of colour and it would be pretty eclectic.” Like her home, Blanca’s personal style is a playful contemporary bohemian look: she mixes colour and prints, as well as different eras. Her wardrobe, which takes up an entire room, comprises essentials such as Levi’s jeans, blazers and leather jackets; vintage finds – such as a pair of Gucci loafers she found in London – a brown leather jacket she discovered in Copenhagen, a Hermès Kelly bag she stumbled upon in Paris and YSL vintage trainers she bought in Treasures Of NYC – many of which she displays as pieces of art in her apartment. And it seems that Blanca was always destined for a career in fashion. “It wasn’t an overnight decision,” she says. “I grew up in a family that was very aware of style. My mum is an interior designer. My dad worked with classic cars and style is a big part of that world. So I think that’s why I became interested in it. Also, my parents paid a lot of attention to their clothes.” Blanca founded La Veste, which means blazer in French, with stylist and designer friend Maria de la Orden in 2018; when Maria couldn’t find an exact style of blazer she wanted for an event. Inspired by a vintage aesthetic, the duo also produce wide-legged trousers, prairie dresses and blouses – mostly in a playful candy-stripe or multi-coloured gingham. Also in 2018, critically before the Covid pandemic took hold, she and Rafa Blanc launched Vasquiat. “Two years ago, Rafa called saying he’d done a study of the market and he hadn’t seen anything like this,” she tells us. “He suggested we go into partnership; with him taking care of the business side and me the fashion and creative direction. I could see it really clearly. It was a great project.” The “online club” offers customers what Blanca describes as a “front row experience” explaining, “We give them privileged access to the latest trends, with the chance to buy collections before they’ve been produced, at a discount of up to 40 per cent. We also offer our own curated selection of the most interesting stuff from each „

Current brand partners include designers Ganni, Stand Studio, Christopher Kane and (of course) La Veste; and the discount offered lessens the closer it comes to a collection being released. “That way, we help the designers to predict demand and to finance their collections.” They named the innovative initiative after American graffiti artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, “Although we spell it with a V,” she explains (in Spanish, b and v sound the same). “We want to be very unconventional, like he was, to break away from what already exists, to create something new.” She tells us that, although their target market is millennials, they are popular with people of all ages. “Our customers are women who want to go a bit further with dressing, to have a personal style. They’re knowledgeable about fashion; they like to know what we’ll be wearing next and who are the up-and-coming designers.” During the Covid pandemic, Blanca has continued to dress up every day and she even posted a “pyjama series” on her Instagram feed, where she has over 500k followers. She also took up sewing and knitted a blanket and gloves, to keep cosy and pass the time. Being optimistic, she sees the industry as resilient enough to bounce back. “Everything is moving very fast in fashion and it has suffered a lot this past year, but I’m not worried because it’s not going to disappear, it’s part of our lives. “Thanks to all we’ve been through lately, we’ve learned to value traditional things more, things that have stood the test of time, and we’re less keen on throwaway stuff. People are starting to realise that it’s better to buy one good, artisan piece than ten lower-quality ones. And we’re turning more to vintage, recycling clothes from the past. I’m a huge fan of vintage.” Q

e can’t think of anyone better to design a collection for iconic Parisian label Hervé Léger, a brand synonymous with body-con, than Julia Restoin Roitfeld. The creative director, designer and model, who is the daughter of Carine Roitfeld, says of the prefall 2021 collection: “I wanted it to have a timeless quality, pieces that can be worn over and over.” It was important to Julia, who has recently founded digital platform Less is More, an ode to buying less but better, that each piece was made using recyclable yarns and packaging. “With so many resources to create great clothing in a more responsible way, designing without using them would be reckless.” She also jokes hhow her friends call her “grannyy” because she shops for the long g term and takes care of her clothes accordingly. “My style m might not have really evolved ovver the years, but I guess that’ss what makes it my own. My uuniform.” Here she tells us abo out her dream day… I’d ake up on Harbour Island in th he Bahamas, with my daughter and my boyfriend. I love the smell of the ocean and the sound of the waves. I ould rise very early, when everyone else e in the house is still asleep. I’d put on some music while e making a coffee. Then medittate, stretch and go for a run, before b having a cold water shower – so I’d be ready befo ore things get hectic. I like to ash my face with Dr Barbara a Sturm Enzyme Cleanser, thhen I apply Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 and Embryolisse moisturiser. And I love any type of cocoa butter for my body.

If I was in New York, my perfect breakfast is a ginger green smoothie from Juice Press and a green shakshuka from Jack’s Wife Freda. I’d put on a pair of my favourite jeans, either Re/Done or Frame, a Ninety Percent T-shirt, Carel Mary-Janes, my Bulgari Serpenti watch and some simple gold hoop earrings. But if I’m on the beach in the Bahamas, I’d wear my black bikini from Solid & Striped, a slip dress and my boyfriend’s Hawaiian shirt tied with a knot at my waist… and bare feet. I’d fly to Sydney, which is one of the best cities in the world, with my boyfriend and daughter – my favourite travelling gang. For the afternoon we would hike and swim, then have a massage. Then we’d walk from Bronte beach to Bondi, where we’d arrive at sunset, in time for happy hour drinks at Icebergs, with a few oysters as an appetiser. Before going to a little Japanese place on the other side of Bondi called Raw Bar. It makes amazing rolls and the fish quality is great. I’d wear something classic with a rock edge, some of my favourite designers are Saint Laurent, Alaïa and Celine – plus Chanel and Dior for bags. I also love Reformation for summer dresses and The Frankie Shop. My ultimate dinner destination would be anywhere in Tokyo. We’d just walk around the streets at night. I’d stay in my black slip dress and switch the Hawaiian shirt for my go-to army-style shirt from Saint Laurent that I’ve had for years. I’d go to sleep in a ryokan with a view of Mount Fuji and wake up surrounded by snow…
