hile the first two days of the Shizuoka Hobby Show are reserved for the hobby trade, the weekend belongs to the modellers. This was the third time that I have attended the Shizuoka Hobby Show but I was no less overwhelmed by the crowds and the sheer number and quality of the displays. Even before entering the halls, the JGSDF (Japan Ground Self Defence Force) had a number of their vehicles on display with soldiers and officers chatting to the public. They were even selling current Japanese uniform items! First port of call was the Flea Market, which has moved to a larger location due to its popularity. There was a fascinating combination of rare and second hand kits, and local cottage industry manufacturers plying their trade. Next up was the model display area – a packed conga line of humanity trying to glimpse the fantastic models on display. This year there seemed to be a significant proportion of Gundam and fantasy figures on display, but the traditional aircraft and military modellers still had plenty to show and see. Finally, the public was let loose in the trade hall. Judging by the numbers there, they were very interested in the new releases! Across the next few pages are a selection of armour and aircraft models seen on the display tables; some great modelling on show. ●

FULL-BUILD: MILITARY VEHICLE TAMIYA 1:35 GERMAN KING TIGER PRODUCTION TURRET ● KIT NO.35164

A KINGTIGER IN DI Tamiya’s kit No.35164 in the Military Miniature Series from the mid '90s can indeed be considered a classic nowadays. There are many more modern kits from other manufacturers on the market, but Tamiya’s King Tiger is still a rock solid base for an accurate and appealing model. Sven Frisch 'ambushes' this Tamiya standard

ore recent releases like the Jagdtiger (35295) or Elefant (35325) feature very well reproduced steel texturing on their armour plates. This is something we can create on our model as

well. With the aid of a motor tool and dental burr we can run the tool at slow speed and randomly tap the burr onto the desired surfaces. With a relaxed wrist the burr will 'jump' from one place to the other thus

creating an irregular pattern of grooves and dents on the otherwise very plain surface of the armour plates. The thicker the armour plate, the more pronounced the surface texturing should be. With this in mind the glacis plate

received more attention than the rear armour plate, for example. After treating all vertical surfaces of the Tiger in the described manner they received a layer of grey primer, applied with a coarse brush in a tapping

DISGUISE motion. The primer dries quite fast during the process leaving a fine surface texture behind. However, careful sanding of these surfaces is required to create a realistic result as seen in the pictures.

The kit’s sand-coloured polystyrene is almost hidden under the layers of grey putty, used to enhance the armour plate texture. Note also the copper wire towing cables, aluminium main gun barrel, Friulmodel cast metal track links and the many photo-etched brass fittings

The red brown areas were covered with Tamiya tape, as precisely as possible. On areas which are difficult to cover, one can use Panzer Putty to mask them off. Just place a piece of putty onto the desired sport and wait some time, until the putty smoothly works its way around the details

Then the process was repeated by applying the green tone. After an appropriate drying time, the green areas were masked off before applying the final colour; dark yellow, or ‘dunkelgelb’, that much debated shade

The dark yellow was airbrushed on in several thin layers, taking care not to flood the model’s surface, which can allow paint to seep under the tape

After working on the surface of the armour plate, the interlocking areas of these plates were reworked with a scalpel blade. On thick armour these can be very pronounced and rough in appearance. Also the edges of the armour plates were reworked to create the typical slightly uneven appearance caused by the torch cutting process. Finally, the prominent weld seams were created with rolled pieces of Magic Sculp.

After rolling them out into an appropriate diameter, they were put in place and then received their typical look with the other end of a small drill. All in all the previously described work was not very time consuming, but enhanced the appearance of the model by a significant degree. The addition of the photo-etched details from Aber was much more time consuming. Their set #35040 contains all the

parts needed to create a nice level of detail on this model. Over the past years I became somewhat lazy when it came to detailing with photo-etched parts. I only replaced details where it was really necessary. However in this case the kit 35164 clearly shows its age and all the smaller tool clasps and other fittings were added. This work pays off in the end. Once all fittings were in place I added the nice towing cables from Eureka

XXL (ER3518). I put them in place in a manner that suggests the cables have previously been used and not properly re-attached after their use. The gun mantlet was detailed with casting numbers and casting seams which were very prominent at times. There are no visors in the kit, so I used pieces from an older Dragon model. applied as described above. From the very beginning it was clear to me that I wanted to represent my King Tiger with the narrower transport tracks, used for transportation by train. Therefore I obtained the set from Friulmodel, No.ATL-42. The crews had to change tracks for such occasions, which required a tremendous effort. Therefore it is not surprising that some vehicles where actually put in action with the narrower tracks still on. Either because there was simply no time to change the tracks before a unit was rushed into action or for the lack of supply of the standard tracks. We don’t know however there is plenty of photographic evidence of King Tigers in action 'wearing' their narrow transport tracks. We sure have seen our good share of King Tiger models, so it is very hard to depict this very popular subject in a manner that it still stands out. The use of the transport tracks has that effect, because it drastically changes the overall appearance of the tank.

PAINTING THE BIG CAT

Another way to give your Tiger II an eye-catching look is the kind of camouflage you use on your model. This is what we are going to discuss next. The legendary and to me very intriguing 'Hinterhalt' (ambush) camouflage is probably one of the most elaborate camouflage schemes of the Second World War. It was factory-applied from October 1944 on and therefore we can observe many vehicles with more or less exactly the same camouflage. There have been plenty of discussions and research about this particular camouflage scheme. Most prominently Mirko Bayerl from Sweden has put lots of effort into re-creating all details of this camouflage. Thanks to him and others, you can find quite a few models with fairly accurate renditions of this scheme nowadays. It was clear to me that I wanted to do this camouflage as well, but not necessarily 100% accurate. The most prominent areas like the

The author used a chemical agent to create a rusty patina on the white metal tracks. He used ‘Quick Rust’ from Wilder for a fast and convincing result. By treating the tracks with an old brush you can create nice variations in the rust. Once done only the inner surfaces were treated with graphite, used to create the burnished steel effect on the inner faces of the track, where the steel-rimmed roadwheels would have run, effectively polishing the links (www.wilder.su)

sides are quite accurate, but there are other areas where I used some artistic freedom, simply because I did not want to spend more time on researching. Typical for the ‘ambush’ scheme are the sharp borders between the colours and the tiny dots all over the vehicle. I decided to create my rendition with the aid of masking tape. After a red brown base-coat I first masked the areas which will remain red brown. Then the green colour was applied. After masking the areas to remain green, the dark yellow paint finally followed, completing the camouflage. This process is indeed time-consuming, but the result very pleasing. With a new scalpel blade you can cut out the pieces of masking tape, until you obtain the correct shape as per your references. Since all the tiny photo-etched pieces are glued in place already, you have to be careful in these areas. In areas where masking with Tamiya tape was not possible, Panzer Putty from Mxpression was used. This material will perfectly cover uneven areas or areas with details such as tool clamps and can be easily removed after the paint was applied. The magic happens when you gently remove all the tape and putty. Here and there may be some touch-ups required before moving on, but if you work carefully during the masking process, this can’t be a big issue. The dots in their corresponding colour where applied with a paint brush.

WEATHERING THE WARRIOR

As for the weathering this time I chose to mainly use oil paints for the entire process. Mike Rinaldi has developed an approach named 'oil paint rendering' where he does all the weathering in one step, creating chips, rust, dust, streaks and so on. While Mike reaches very striking results with this approach, I am still learning. However I found it very suitable for late war camouflage schemes. The camouflage on this Tiger Ausf. B is very high in contrast and therefore the weathering and fading of the tones is important to create a balanced result. This approach is more time consuming, but it offers much more control over the final result, because the drying time is much longer than compared to other media. Once the work with the oils was done and they'd had a couple of days to thoroughly dry out, pigments and enamel based products were used, especially for dust effects. As you may know, German tanks – especially in the second half of the war – had to be heavily camouflaged to avoid air attacks from Allied fighters. Often the crews used large branches to cover the entire vehicle. Even when the branches were removed again, leaves and smaller branches remained on the vehicle. This is what I wanted to display on my model as well. Various sorts of dry grass and leaves from Plus Model

Products such as MP’s Engine Grime are great to make oil and grease stains. They work especially well on a surface which has been treated with pigments already

them onto the desired areas, they can be permanently fixed with diluted PVA-glue. Once dry I applied a wash with brown enamel paint on individual leaves to create a more random appearance. If you want them to appear wet, you can add some gloss enamel paint. Finally, spent shell casings always add visual interest to a model; however they also need to be weathered. I mimicked the discolouration caused by the heat with a light overcoat of Tamiya X-18 Smoke and a Light Wash with AK’s Engine Grime.

CONCLUSION

To finish the model I painted another classic – this time a figure from Verlinden Productions. I think both products must have been released in about the decade, maybe the figure is even older than the King Tiger kit. However both can easily be lifted to today’s standards when you are willing to invest a little more time. As said

amiya's Lotus 49B was originally released in the late 1960s and in those days it was motorised, but in subsequent re-issues it was sold as a display-only model. I managed to pick mine up from an online auction site for a good price! It's the first time I have built this particular model. It's an old kit, so there are some extra steps to take when putting the parts together; there were a few gaps so these were corrected with putty and a file. This work was very important, so it took up a fair bit of time. A gap between the body and bulkhead was also corrected with putty. If fitted together now, painting these parts would be difficult, so they were painted individually and glued together after decal application and polishing were finished.

BODY DETAILING

All the moulded rivets on the body parts were scraped off. I then applied masking tape to act as a template, with the positions of the rivets marked on it. 0.5mm holes were drilled using a pin-vice and about 300 new rivets were then inserted into the holes. It's possible to remove the nose cowl thanks to micro-screws included in the kit, but I

chose instead to fill the screw holes with putty and fixed the cowling in place with pins, for a more scale-like appearance. To create the Lotus emblem on the nose cowling, I applied the decal to a metal plate and covered it with built-up layers of enamel varnish to give it a slightly three-dimensional look. Some sections of the cooling system water pipes were oval in cross-section and there was a fair

bit of other distortion too, so they were re-made with 3mm plastic rod. Pieces of rubber tubing were then used to join it to the other pipework. The seated figure in a driving pose wasn't to be used, so a new seat was made in epoxy putty. The buckles were borrowed from a Ferrari 312T4 kit and the webbing was made from ribbon, found at a handicrafts store.

V FIGURE The seated driver formed the core of

the new figure, to be remodelled into a standing pose. Each joint; elbows, knees and lower back, were cut and then rejoined with 2mm aluminium rod in order to create a new pose, paying attention to the correct anatomy so that the figure looked natural. Once the pose had been decided, modelling putty was used to reconstruct the joints and recreate the folds and wrinkles in the figure's racing suit. The expression of the hands was also important. All fingers were cut off the palms, left and right. To form new fingers, 1.5mm plastic rod was cut up and each piece then joined by metal wire in a similar manner to the way the body was re-posed. Once the hands and fingers had been positioned, epoxy putty was again used to build up to reform the hands.

COMBINATION OF A CAR MODEL AND A FIGURE

A driver figure positioned alongside their car is sometimes seen in model displays, but in this piece of work, I wanted to place the emphasis on the driver, adding drama to the presentation, in the simplest way possible, so I spent a lot of time working on the figure to attain a natural and realistic pose. I have done similar things with motorcycle models too; it's well worth doing for something a little different! ●

EDUARD EXCELLENCE = GREAT GUSTAVS! Jan Abrahamsson has built the new, completely revised Eduard Messerschmitt Bf109G-6 Late in 1:48; was the re-tool worth doing?

S

o, finally it arrived on my desk. I have to admit waiting eagerly and nervously for the new Eduard Messerschmitt Bf109G-6. I did build the first kit released in 2014, but could not quite come to terms with the commonly agreed issues on details and the size of the model. So when the new kit was released this spring, I was quick to order a couple of them, even though I was still filled with apprehension. Would the new kit prove to have been worth the wait? Would the new G-6 Late simply be too little and too late? First impressions were good. This time, Eduard has chosen to start out by releasing a '109G-6 late version with a nice set of markings, providing

us with five different options from 1944-1945. The late version has the Erla cockpit canopy and several other choices of details relevant for the late G-6, but also for the G-5, G-10 and K-4. A comprehensive set of clear parts, photo-etch, masks and a very sensible breakdown of parts got me excited. I quickly proceeded to select to build Hauptmann Franz Dörrs machine based at the Luftwaffe fighter airfield Gossen, south of Trondheim in Norway, May 1945. Franz Dörr started out the war in 1939 as a reconnaissance pilot, then serving with JG5 'Eisenmeer' in Norway, ending the war with 128 aerial victories, almost all of them Soviet aircraft. Franz Dörr died in Germany 1972, aged fifty-nine.

A WELL DETAILED FRONT OFFICE

As I started out with the cockpit it became clear that it is well detailed. All the relevant parts are represented and it only took a few minutes to build and prepare for painting. The photo-etch details and instrument panel provided by Eduard really makes it into a beautiful replica, any further detailing is not necessary. For the painting to begin I started out by using Mr. Surfacer 1500 as a primer, followed by Gunze RLM 66 Dark Grey. I gradually lightened the basic colour with Gunze white, picking up the highlights. Some areas where then drybrushed with Humbrol metallic paints to show a fairly worn and well lived-in cockpit. The Eduard etch seatbelts went on easily, and

several washes with dark brown and black oil colour made sure the detail would stand out. The seatbelts got some extra attention; fading them and making them look dirty and worn, also using lighter buff oil colours.

PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER

Setting the cockpit aside I went straight onto the next steps in construction, being able to put most of the kit together in a matter of hours. The build was a real pleasure and quite fun also. The whole experience reminded me of building Eduard’s Spitfire kits, but even easier and more straightforward. Eduard has clearly made an effort to simplify and speed things up in the construction phase of this kit, while still providing superb surface detail with crisp panel lines and very subtle rivets. The

only area where I got a bit confused was regarding the brake lines on the landing gear. The instructions show a similar brake line as for the '109E, but no parts can be found in the kit. A quick email to Eduard clarified that they had forgotten to delete this detail from instructions. The conclusion is that if you want to include the '109G brake lines, you need to build them yourself, using thin thread or copper wire. Having put most of the model together, I cleaned the whole thing with alcohol-based thinner to remove all grease and dirt; most of it from my grubby fingers, mind you, not through any fault of Eduard. The whole kit was then primed by spraying with Mr. Surfacer 1500 straight from the can, to create a strong base for the rest of the painting to come.

LAYING THE FOUNDATION

I work quite a lot with different pre-shading techniques on most of my models. I find that this enables me to build up paint effects very subtly, creating depth and variation to the colour tones. I normally pre-shade not only the panel lines and areas for shadow, but also whole panel sections to give structure based colour variations. It is important to plan the final result of the paint job already at this stage, making sure the pre-shading supports all the following paint and weathering steps towards the desired final effect. With a worn and faded very late war '109G in mind; I had to think carefully about how to get the right amount of depth in the paint job.

I started out by using a dark grey spraying the rivet and panel lines, working with a 0.15 mm nozzle in the airbrush, taking care to be rather precise. I then I use a whole range of greys, white and black paint on panel sections to break up the surface even more. Once the whole model is prepared like this I go back and adjust tonality and improve the overall balance, adding contrast as needed, often exaggerating this, to have contrast to work with in the later stages of painting.

THOSE ELUSIVE GREYS

According to the German Air Ministry's original painting instructions for Me109Gs, the paint demarcation between the RLM74 and RLM75 colours should be a gradual blending over a space not wider than 5cm on the real aircraft. This means that I needed to create a subtle paint demarcation unlike the hard demarcation seen on Me109E series. To do this I use paper masks pasted onto the kit using Blu-Tack, creating a distance between the mask and the

model surface of no more than 0.5-1mm. Then spraying the grey camouflage patterns over this mask, the small distance creates the right amount of softness between the colour fields. You could of course spray this free-hand, but I have found it hard to get the right level of blending of colours this way. I then started with the lighter RLM75 grey gradually building up the desired effect in three to four layers, making sure that the pre-shading shows through just enough to be visible.

It is important to strive for an irregular effect over the airframe. Hereby we create a weathered and worn effect, meaning that these initial paint layers are already working in the weathering effects in mind. I then add a number of layers of the darker RLM74 to complete the camouflage pattern. Removing the masks is always a tense moment, to check if the right amount of colour blending has been achieved between the light and dark grey areas.

THAT LIGHT BLUE-WHITE COLOUR

Next I turned to that wonderful RLM76, a colour that over the last few years of the war tended to go lighter and more towards white. There was much variation, and on some very late aircraft it comes across as more white than blue. say that this kit was worth all the anxious waiting? I have to say that this was one of my smoothest and most enjoyable builds in a long time. Eduard has been able to create a model that combines a very accurate representation of a late 109G-6 with superb surface detail, excellent interior detail, and attractive marking options. And importantly, a model kit that is very easy to put together, enabling us to get to the painting stage in only a few hours. I already have several more of the Eduard 109G-6 projects in the funnel and I very much look forward to the release of their Me109G-5 this summer, as well as their Me109F in the autumn. This will truly be a golden era for all of us who are passionate about the Messerschmitt 109 in all its variants! he P-51D Mustang is considered to be one of the most beautiful aeroplanes in the history of aviation, by most aircraft lovers. But I'm not under the spell of this version so much, I'm more impressed with its earlier version, known in British nomenclature as the Mustang III. Some time ago, while surfing the internet's vast resources, I hit the pages of The Polish Institute and Sikorski Museum and there I found a film showing the Mustang IV in the camouflage of 303 Squadron. That was enough; something ideally matching my interests, a very well known plane in a barely-known paint scheme. After a quick search I found information on 'PD-L', the same

aircraft but after a change of markings. That raised my interest even more in that plane. Some arduous book reading, surfing the internet, numerous phone calls and emails resulted in a more complete set of information.

ENTER TAMIYA

Having so much information, I had to make it into a model, but that's easier said than done. After some long chats and searching I put on my workbench an almost ideal model, namely the P-51D/K by Tamiya and a full set of PE parts by Eduard. The model itself is pure poetry, all parts are beautifully and precisely made. You might be surprised by the word 'almost' ideal. That's because of the wings. All

Mustangs had their wings puttied for aerodynamic efficiency but the model manufacturer gave us ideal lines and full riveting. Thus, the wings had to be modified but I'll talk about that later. At the beginning I read the instructions thoroughly; they are like a good book, keeping you in suspense until the end and they guide you well. As Tamiya suggests, I started with the replica of the Packard Merlin engine. You have to be quite careful here because some parts of the engine are for other Tamiya models (Spitfires) which differ in detail, but the instructions guide you clearly. The parts are moulded sharply and precisely.

V EDUARD DETAILS

I only added a few wires and details from the set by Eduard. Afterwards, I painted them all black and some parts silver. I spent most time on the ignition wires; hidden later on, but that is another story. With the help of available documents I wired-up the engine with and then put it aside for its turn to be installed. The next step, as the manual suggests, is to cement the firewall and oil tank. These parts look nice as they are, but the additional wires and photo-etched parts by Eduard make this element look even better. I painted all the details in suitable colours using Mr Hobby paints, added some leaks and then fixed them to the engine with a screw. Having the heart of the Mustang assembled, it was time to work on the cockpit. You must choose the parts very carefully, comparing them with the documents, as the set offers different versions and equipment. I compared the details with the Eduard parts and the only things left on my table were the parts from the set and the accessories by Barracuda Studios cockpit upgrade and cockpit stencils. The cockpit details were painted suitable colours with the Gunze paints and I also added the awesome seat belts by HGW. I tried to make the cabin floor look a bit worn by using 'wood' decal, painting it black then adding some discolouration and scratches with pigments. Having it all painted, I put the parts together like Lego blocks.

CLOSING UP THE FUSELAGE

Having all the necessary details in place, I assembled the fuselage. I was a bit afraid at this point, because there were lots of parts to be brought together, but cementing them as the instructions tell you, there was no problem, as usual with Tamiya. All the parts fitted perfectly. The fuselage was put to rest while I started working on the wings. Here, in my opinion, there's an error. Tamiya created beautiful riveting and panel lines, but if you want an accurate result, you have to putty that intricate web; a must is a must. I applied Mr Surfacer 500 with a brush over all the lines and rivets; the wing looks very ugly after this procedure, then it was time to sand off the primer. Day by day, I treated the surface with polishing sponges until I was happy with the effect. I had to apply another layer of the primer to be absolutely sure it was okay. Making the wings smooth took me about three weeks, but it was worth it. The main parts of the wheel bays were embellished with Eduard parts, painted, weathered and they then looked really nice. At that point, I also completed the landing gear legs with the fantastic resin wheels from Eduard's Brassin series. The gun bay was still to be finished, so I embellished it with Eduard parts and cables made with very thin wire, then painted it all in suitable colours. Now, having all the main components, I was able to make the wing into one

element simply by assembly and cementing. I now know why these models are so expensive; you get what you pay for.

WING MEETS FUSELAGE

When the wing was dry, I cemented the remaining parts; flaps and ailerons. As with previous sub-assemblies, they all fitted perfectly. I was heading for the moment when the wing was to be joined with the fuselage and

the Mustang shape would be seen. I was a bit afraid because gluing the wing to the fuselage is a multi-stage operation and you have to add a few smaller items along the way. But that moment had to come; a test fitting, a click and it looked great. I made two such trials and each time the result was the same. Having nothing to wait for, I used the green cement by Tamiya and secured the joint line. The Mustang

shape could now be seen. Unfortunately, after drying, an area had to be puttied; the fuselage-wing transition near the engine. On the internet I read other modellers' problems in the same place, so I was not the only one that experienced this. But it wasn't a big problem. While the putty was drying, I fixed the remaining parts – stabilisers and ailerons – and here is where I had a problem.

PAINTS TO USE? V WHICH I could now start the

painting. But what specific colours should be chosen? RAF Mustangs were either painted with American equivalents of the British colours or they were repainted in England. Unfortunately, lots of information I got was contradictory, so I chose the lesser evil; my model was painted with the British equivalents from the tri-pack by Gunze (Mr Hobby). To start with, I covered the engine, wheel bay and cabin with masking tape and I applied some Mr Surfacer to hide small imperfections. Fortunately, there were few of them and I was able to prep the surface in one evening. I started with the lightest shade, on the undersides. Gunze/Mr Hobby paints dry fast and make the surface super satin. But coming back to the painting, it took me quite a long time to find the layout of the camouflage type C which is on this Mustang. In the Kagero and AJ Press books about Polish

Mustangs there are slightly different models and what I painted was the combination from these two sources. The painting of the top itself took me two days, with no rushing. After finishing, the Mustang looked a bit weird in that camouflage, as it was usually silver, but here it was a different colour. The masks were made by the Melius Manu company and my big thanks go to Kajetan at this point. After having left the model to dry, it was painted with gloss varnish in the area where decals were to be applied. They were settled in place with Microscale liquids. When they were dry, I applied gloss varnish over the whole airframe and it was then time for some weathering. I used AK Interactive and Mig Productions materials, rubbing them in, painting different colours and trying to make the surface look 'used'. Once I was happy with the effect, I airbrushed on Microscale matt varnish and most of my effects disappeared! My friend gave me a quick explanation why

it happened and I had to start again. Fortunately, it didn't take long and I could finally enjoy the results of this beautiful 303 Sq Mustang.

SO WHAT IS THE TAMIYA MODEL LIKE; IS IT WORTH THE PRICE ?

In 1:32 we can choose from a few Mustang models, the old Hasegawa is not the worst, but it's empty inside and you have to put in some effort to

make it into a good model. I haven't seen the Dragon kit, but my friends' reviews and opinions do not encourage me to buy it. There is also the Zoukei Mura (and I have this one). It presents a different look at the topic. Is it worse? Definitely not, it's just different, but it's another story. Coming back to Tamiya – and I will keep this short – it really is worth its price and I really recommend it. ●

A DRAGON’S TALE T

he Svenska Aeroplan AB (SAAB) 35 ‘Draken’ (Dragon) was an immensely significant Swedish jet fighter from the Cold War period that was designed to be supersonic and able to land and take off from highways. It was introduced to service in 1960 and retired as recently as 2005, from the Austrian Air Force. It’s a superb-looking machine with a double-delta wing and a sleek profile; it’s a fantastic subject for a model kit, which is exactly what Hasegawa did back in 2008. The kit was released to much acclaim back then and has been issued in several different marking schemes since. Now, with this re-boxing from Eduard, we have the excellent injection-moulded

sprues from the Japanese company, plus Eduard’s own, extremely well thought-out additions. In this limited-edition kit, we are treated to a new sheet of decals providing schemes for Swedish, Finnish, Austrian and Danish air forces, each having its own visual appeal. Eduard’s threedimensional additions include a choice of two styles of main undercarriage wheel in resin (the brake hub detail is exquisite), a new nose wheel, a fantastic new pilot’s seat and a tail-hook and fairing for the Danish AF machine. In photo-etched metal, we are provided with two sheets; one in plain brass carrying mechanical components (afterburner ring, UC scissor-links,

cabling and more) plus a sheet of pre-coloured etched parts that carry two styles of instrument panel, numerous control boards, side consoles and seat harnesses. To finish off this marvellous re-boot of an already excellent kit, Eduard have included a sheet of canopy masks, which hugely ease that often tedious task. This is a very appealing release, combining high-quality plastic with Eduard’s stunning resin, brass and decals to create a very complete package. T

he Republic RF-84F Thunderflash was a scout, single-engined jet with an 'arrow' wing, produced by the US Republic Aviation Corporation since the mid-fifties. The Thunderflash was a development of the F-84F Thunderstreak, designed specifically for photo-recon missions. Outwardly the new aircraft was distinguished clearly from the predecessor, which has earned a different name; the nose-cone was designed to hold photographic equipment resulting in the displacement of the air intake to the root of the wing leading edge. The Thunderflash came to Italy to equip the units of the 3rd Wing. The department, initially called '3rd Fighter Wing' from March 1954 was transferred from Bari to the base at the airport of Verona, and from the following June began to receive before the F-84G Thunderjet then, in December, the first Thunderflashes. Towards the end of the same year, the department took on the designation of the '3rd Reconnaissance Wing'.

THE KIT

Until now, to realize a photographic reconnaissance version of the famous F-84, it was necessary to settle the model from Heller, but thanks to the Turkish company Tanmodel, you can have a kit of the latest generation, made by 3D

scanning the real aircraft and detailed using the latest technologies in the field of CAD modelling With around three hundred parts, this kit offers lots of options for open panels revealing avionics and photographic equipment, a nicely detailed cockpit with raised instrument detail (although no seat belts are provided), poseable ailerons, rudders, flaps and air-brakes with open ducting to the turbine face; all very nicely done. Landing gear and wheel-wells continue the quality with the tyres unusually provided as separate parts. Being a photo-recon aircraft, underwing stores are limited to a choice of rather large fuel tanks.

BUILDING

As usual, I started the construction of the kit by running a test-fit of the main parts of the aircraft; I did not encounter major problems, rather it shows a very good job in the design phase, especially the wing-fuselage match. With this done, this I started with assembly, with the cockpit. The level of detail is very high and does not require much improvement work. I focused instead on the seat; missing the belts I decided to reproduce them with self-adhesive aluminium foil and brass sheet cut to shape, with the addition of the smaller details still using the above materials. (larger than the other) and for the oxygen and g-suit tubes I used 'Green Stuff' two-part putty, appropriately shaped. With the same material, I also reproduced the seat cushion. The tubular reinforcements were redone using Albion Alloy tubing. Once I'd finished with the improvement work, I gave everything a coat of primer using Gunze Mr.Surfacer 1500 which has the advantage of being

opaque, thus ensuring an excellent base for subsequent paint work. The interior was then coated with Gunze 307 (Grey FS36320), using a mottled application technique to create a non-uniform and more realistic finish. The side consoles were left black, and I emphasised the buttons with a drybrush of medium grey; some coloured with red and yellow. The same treatment was applied to the instrument panel; the edges of the instruments were retouched with black and the dial details were

touched in with a thin brush and white paint. Before closing up the fuselage halves, I painted the exhaust and its duct. Referring to photographs, I proceeded with a layer of Tamiya XF-4 Yellow Green (Yellow Zinc Chromate) aged with Mig Productions' 'Brown Green' colour-wash, trying to create the patina of dirt left by the combustion of fuel. Consulting the instruction sheet, one can see that the photographic equipment in the nose will obviate the need for a weight to prevent the model sitting

on its tail. Having decided to build the kit without opening up the photographic compartments, I limited the paint in the compartment to black, with a light drybrush in grey. I used a light grey for the bodies of the cameras; once closed up, very little of the interior will be visible. With the fuselage closed up, I checked for gaps to fill; on an aircraft with a natural metal finish, every little fault would be immediately emphasised. So after sanding a first time to remove the glue marks, I checked all seams using a felt-tipped marker. Where necessary, I filled the gaps using super glue in order to have less of a problem when re-engraving the panel lines. Before proceeding with the colour, I sanded the whole model with wet sandpaper in order to create a smooth surface ready for subsequent work with the natural metal finish.

PAINTING

First, I airbrushed a gloss black coat as a base for the metallic colour. I then proceeded to apply layers of the metallic finish to the whole model. Having in mind the idea of creating an operating aeroplane, I did not insist too much on the homogeneity of the painting, leaving a few points less covered, then with a different shade of metallic. After spraying an coat of clear varnish, I started masking off the walkways, the anti-glare panel and all other painted parts according to the scheme chosen.

DECALS

Before proceeding with the weathering phase, I applied the decals to the model; because these would have been on the actual aircraft from its first flight, they received the same ageing treatment as the whole airframe. At first glance the decal sheet seems to be slightly low in quality, with some markings off-register, but once cropped from the excess film and treated with decal softeners, they formed perfectly over the detail below, leading to greater realism. All the work was been sealed with a gloss coat.

WEATHERING

Before proceeding, I thoroughly studied the photos of this aircraft and, in general, aircraft with natural metal finishes, looking for a way to attain, in a realistic way, the characteristic patina of oxidation that forms on all surfaces because of weathering. After many tests I came to the conclusion that for me, the best way to re-create this effect was to treat the model surfaces with a sponge soaked in oil paint. The technique is simple; one starts by mixing different shades of colour that will be used for the patination effect which in my case, were three different shades of grey. Using different sponges, suitably squeezed out of excess colour onto a napkin, I dabbed various parts of the model, thus creating spots of different shades.

During these steps it is important to proceed in a random way, without loading too much colour in the sponges, as this would cause an annoying excess of pigment to be handled during the step of standardization. The final phase of this technique is to homogenise the previous work by the use of a sponge, lightly moistened in solvent; it's very important that the sponge has been fully squeezed out, as it should not be completely wet, but just slightly damp. You can then proceed by dabbing the various surfaces previously treated with oil paints, to obtain a thin coat on the entire surface that still allows the metallic finish below to show through.

CONCLUSION

Tanmodel became part of the modelling scene quite recently and with their RF-84F they have made it abundantly clear the have serious intentions to stay. Many are in fact the news announced for the future. The kit builds up well, is very detailed and with the help of some small improvements we can achieve a good reproduction of the American scout, which also served under many other flags around the world. Now it is planned to re-release the kit with a new decal sheet that promises to have even more options than the first, as well as some improvements on some parts of the kit. ●

In this release, Dragon have added five figures to the box, comprising a wounded soldier being helped to walk by a helmeted medic, another wounded soldier laying on a stretcher plus doctor and nurse figures, the latter both in periodcorrect medical uniforms. All five figures are very well sculpted and the stretcher’s fabric areas are well detailed. The kit standard instructions show the longitudinal internal bench seat but do not show how the upper stretcher should be installed, so the modeller must deduce that him/ herself; the rear deck has been modified so it will locate properly. An excellent set in one box and a vignette in the makings; just add a Normandy ‘bocage’ field and some hedgerows. HORIZON MODELS, AUSTRALIA MERCURY - ATLAS www.horizon-models.com SCALE; 1:72 MATERIALS; IM, PE, WS KIT NUMBER; 2002 Kits of factual space subjects don’t come along all that often, so we took particular interest in this new 1:72 model of the historic Mercury solo spacecraft, with its Convair Atlas launch vehicle. The significance of this mission can not be over-estimated, as it was America’s first venture into manned spaceflight, leading to the Gemini, Apollo and ultimately the Space Shuttle programmes. Horizon’s new kit comes on four sprues of dark grey injection-moulded polystyrene plus a small but very fine photo-etched metal fret and a generous sheet of decals. Moulding quality is excellent (think Trumpeter) with above average levels of detail; the Mercury capsule and its escapetower are particularly refined. From this kit you can build any of the craft from missions MA-1 to MA-9 and alternative parts and decals are provided for each, clearly highlighted in the very thorough instructions. Pick a version and stick to it is the motto here. A wonderfully produced model of a very important spacecraft and an excellent addition to a collection of ‘real space’ models. To quote the company website; “The Special was a fastback version of the 1954 Hudson Hornet favoured by stock class drag racers in the 1960s. Complete with the high performance 308 Hudson engine, this kit replicates this unusual car in 1:25 scale”. The model comes in grey and clear polystyrene, vacuum-plated ‘chrome’ parts (wheels, bumpers, grille, headlights, steering wheel, wipers, door handles and more) plus soft, black vinyl tyres, a steel rear axle bar and a small decal sheet for body logos and number plates. Everything you need is in the box, minus cement, paints and perhaps Bare Metal Foil for the body trim and window frames. As we’ve said before, the bodyshell is a beautiful moulding and it captures the stout profile of this car perfectly. The 308 engine is provided in full and the instructions are very clear. Another appealing version of Hudson’s muscular Hornet to add to your collection. MN

PORSCHE 914/6 2 ‘N 1 www.revell.com SCALE; 1:25 MATERIALS; IM, SVT, WS KIT NUMBER; 85-4378 Here we have a re-issue of Revell’s ‘70s kit of the mouthwateringly retro 1972 Porsche 914/6 in ‘2 ‘n 1’ form. The model takes the form of the 1.9 litre, flat-six, carburettorfuelled machine and comes with the five-bolt Fuchs wheels in chrome plus the Targa roof. From looking at the model on the box-top and the kit parts, the nose looks a little too short and the windscreen a little too high, but that could just be our visual impression. The windscreens (high and low) are moulded as individual components so there is no cutting required to build the racing version, just a new, streamlined clear part and central rear-view mirror. Decals are provided for this machine too and it would make an interesting model for a collection of vintage sports cars. It would also provide the answer to the too-high looking windscreen of the stock ‘914. Detail is quite good considering the kit’s vintage and it has the potential to become a very attractive model. ALFA ROMEO 155 V6 TI MARTINI www.hobbyco.net SCALE; 1:24 • MATERIALS; IM, SVT, PC, WS • KIT NUMBER; 6599 Not many race-spec cars have looked as striking as the 1996 Alfa Romeo 155 V6 TI Martini so it’s great that Tamiya chose to re-issue this kit. It comes with the full Martini sponsorship as standard, but if you choose to use aftermarket decals, it’s important you use this (or the Bosch-sponsored car) white-plastic bodied kit for the conversion, rather than the overall red car (24137). This is because the red die in the bodyshell moulding can eventually leach up through the primer, paint and decals and discolour the markings. The model comes with a very decent replica of the V6 engine, needing just cabling and other plumbing to bring it to life (if you have the references). The interior is thoroughly detailed too and again, wiring will breathe life into it. MN

BUNDESWEHR FLAKPANZER 1 GEPARD SPAAG A1/A2 www.pocketbond.co.uk SCALE; 1:35 MATERIALS; IM, PE, CW, WS KIT NUMBER; 2044 The Leopard tank-based Gepard (Cheetah) self-propelled anti-aircraft gun system was a favourite subject in Tamiya’s catalogue (in 1:35 and 1:16) for many decades, but now Takom have taken the subject and given it a whole new lease of life with their recently released 1:35 model. The company already has some experience with the Leopard tank so this release is a logical progression for them; the hull is rendered with high levels of detail and the non-slip texture is subtly replicated where appropriate. The suspension uses individually-moulded swing arms, along with individual dampers and bump-stops; way better than having them moulded in with the lower hull. The tracks come as separate links (and guide-horns) that are assembled using flexible end-connectors; how this system works in practise remains to be seen. The guns are extremely well done and the turret is delightfully engineered. This is a fabulous Cold War subject and is sure to prove popular. More on this kit soon. MN

A17 VICKERS TETRARCH MK.I MKICS LIGHT TANK www.hannants.co.uk SCALE; 1:35 MATERIALS; IM, PE, WS KIT NUMBER; CB35210 At long, last we have a premiumquality injection-moulded kit of the British WW2 Tetrarch light tank, a machine designed for airborne deployment, hence its small size. Bronco have really done it proud, with comprehensive driver’s and fighting compartments, both areas making use of photo-etched elements for enhanced detail. The area of the interior directly beneath the turret is crammed with small parts from the firewall forwards, including ammunition rounds, crew seating and more. The turret-mounted radio is a delightful piece, with excellent moulded detail and a photoetched guard frame too. The Tetrarch’s spindly suspension is faithfully replicated and will need very careful assembly for the various elements to match up; those big roadwheels/sprockets/ idlers will need a solid base to mount to. The individual tracklinks are of the cement-together type and, as you might imagine, are tiny; great care and good tweezers are needed here! An amazingly detailed little model and some perfect markings choices; the 6th Airborne machine, June 1944 Normandy is our favourite of course. SOVIET SIX-WHEEL ARMY TRUCK www.hannants.co.uk SCALE; 1:35 MATERIALS; IM, SVT, WS KIT NUMBER; 35001 Although not named as such on the box, ICM’s newest vehicle kit depicts the Soviet KamAZ 4310, a thirty-five year old design that has served in various roles and theatres of operation within the Soviet military. The kit is completely new and makes use of ICM’s impressive expertise in moulddesign and creation and is really a rather magnificent production. As you’d expect, it comes with a full build-up chassis with leaf-sprung front axle (the leafs springs themselves are very conveniently moulded in with the chassis rails), a highly detailed engine, gearbox and drivetrain plus a complete cabin interior. The whole kit is moulded in light grey polystyrene and the detail in the components is really impressive. There are quite a lot of parts here, but it’s not an overwhelmingly complex model and could be tackled by the enthusiastic builder in a couple of weeks of evenings. Bring on a host of conversion sets! MN

LAMBORGHINI COUNTACH 25TH ANNIVERSARY www.hobbyco.net SCALE; 1:24 MATERIALS; IM, CP, SVT, WS KIT NUMBER; 3684 The Lamborghini Countach has one of the most memorable profiles of all time and Athena posters of this 1970s super-car from Sant’Agata have adorned many a teenager’s bedroom wall over the years (alongside that famous one with the lady tennis player no doubt). Italeri’s 1:24 kit depicts the final version of the Countach (Italian Piedmontese dialect for the expression ‘heavens!’ or ‘crikey!’) which, surprisingly, only ceased production in 1990. The kit is moulded in black (of course), metallic grey, clear and plated polystyrene, plus a sheet of decals with license plates for Italian, German and USA-registered machines. It comes with a goodlooking replica of the V12 engine, sporting some excellent detail. Same goes for the cabin interior; the seats are particularly well moulded. The wheels look tiny (massive rims and skinny rubber had yet to catch on back then) but they are nicely done, with separate inner discs. A fabulous and outrageous car and a very decent kit. MN

FORD ESCORT RS1600 MK.I 1972 DAILY MIRROR RAC RALLY WINNER www.grandprixmodels.com www.hiroboy.com SCALE; 1:24 MATERIALS; IM, CP, SVT, WS KIT NUMBER; 3684 This 1972 Roger Clark/Tony Mason Ford Escort is an icon of rallying and we were delighted when we learnt of its release by Belkits in 1:24. The model is moulded in mainly white polystyrene, a sprue of very scale-like dark ‘chrome’, one of clear for the windows and headlight lenses plus soft black vinyl for the mudflaps and cabin stowage pouches. The decals are by Cartograf and a photo-etched fret (right) provides seatbelt buckles, brake discs faces, front grille and other small parts; the seatbelt webbing is taken care of by a length of fine ribbon (black and blue are supplied). Finally, the bonnet-mounted Ford logo, rear badge and rear-view mirror face are provided as self-adhesive, chromed stickers. Two types of tyre are also included, for different rallying surfaces. Belkits have done a brilliant job of the ‘Coke bottle’ body of the Mk.I Escort and this promises to be a great-looking model once complete. MN

The G-5 canopy also featured circular desiccant capsules attached to the canopy. This ProfiPACK edition comprises 186 parts in grey plastic, fourteen parts in clear, a coloured photo-etch fret, self-adhesive canopy masks and markings for five aircraft. More than seventy of the parts are marked ‘not for use’ and there are a few optional parts too, so the actual number of parts used is quite modest. The fuselage is full-length with the only inserts being the gun cowl deck and the top of the tail, allowing either the standard or the tall fin to be fitted. The lower cowl is moulded as part of the fuselage sides and the cowling gun bulges and the supercharger intake fit into precisely recessed areas on the nose. BG Eduard’s 1:48 G-5 is a logical addition to their re-tooled Gustav family. This is a great kit that adds five attractive new marking options specific to this pressurised version Pay attention as to which parts are to be used for this version

TAKOM, CHINA

ZSU-57-2 SOVIET SPAAG www.pocketbond.co.uk SCALE; 1:35 MATERIALS; IM, PE, MC, WS ITEM NO; 2058 The latest T-54 tank-based variant to arrive from Takom in 1:35 kit form is the distinctive-looking Soviet ZSU-57-2 self-propelled anti-aircraft gun, developed in the late 1940s and early ‘50s. The vehicle featured a revised, four-wheeled hull (with thinner armour) which gave it a ‘shorter’ appearance than the standard main battle tank, but the suspension was just more spaced out on the ZSU, giving the roadwheels a rather gap-toothed look. Loosing the wheels and armour thickness lightened up the hull significantly. The massive open-topped turret contained twin S-68A 57mm L/76.6 S-60 auto-cannons and Takom have done a great job of replicating them here; each one is made up from a lot of parts, which is just as well, as both guns are on show. The tracks are the individual-link, cement-together type and are pre-trimmed from the sprue. A very interesting kit of a rare machine. Lots of detail inside Tracks are non-articulated and each link has two ejector-pin marks; Friulmodel tracks might be better here

ADAM'S ARMOUR MODELLING GUIDE VOLUME 1; CONSTRUCTION ADAM WILDER, AFV MODELLER PUBLICATIONS ISBN; 978-0-9555413-8-4 www.wilder.su www.afvmodeller.com US modeller Adam Wilder is a well known name in the armour modelling scene and as has happened at various points in the history of scale modelling, his signature style has become very recognisable and highly influential. You can find examples of Adam's striking model work on the internet and in the gallery sections of other books, but now you can have him all to yourself, so to speak, in two volumes that describe his construction techniques (Vol.1) and painting and finishing (Vol.2). 'Construction' is a hefty tome, running to 196 pages (with covers) and is printed in full colour on art-grade paper. The book kicks off with a generous gallery chapter (over sixty pages) that show the author's armour model-work in its unpainted and painted states; this alone would be enough for most people but the book is only just getting going. It continues with a wide range of modelling techniques from parts-prep, initial modelling techniques, tools, filling surface holes, puttying, sanding gun barrels, fixing photo-etch to weld seam enhancement and more. This might seem a little prosaic but it's actually very interesting to see how an accomplished modeller such as Adam does these tasks. More advanced processes follow; creating cast textures, replacing grab handles, wiring up headlamps, assembling tracks (moulded and cast metal), working with resin, styrene surgery, realistic weld seams, a necessarily large section on zimmerit, battle damage and finally, soldering photo-etched parts. It's a genuinely useful book and it comes highly recommended for armour modellers of all levels. MN

The production runs to 240 pages (with covers) this time and every one is a goldmine of information, inspiration and motivation. Again we are treated to high quality paper and very clear photography and this ideal combination allows the author's remarkable flair to been shown off to jaw-dropping effect. The book covers the whole armourmodel finishing process from base colour application, airbrushing camouflage, red-oxide primer application, colour-washes, fading and shading painted surfaces, paint chipping, the famous hairspray technique, colour-modulation, painting on-vehicle tools, towing cables, tracks, headlights, periscopes, exhausts, raw steel and rust to the creation of earth, thick mud, dust, rain-marks and mud-splatter. The author guides the reader through the production of the most extraordinary, hyper-realistic finishing techniques you're ever likely to see on a model; the ones we all really want to learn. It's easy to run out of superlatives when describing the imagery on show here but if you strive to give your models that ultrareal feel, this book is an unmissable production. As with Volume 1, highly recommended. MN

bought this kit years ago on the internet, expecting a nice little model with plenty of detail and the opportunity to put together a miniature of a classic car that would please the eye. Instead, I received a product that showed its age. It would require lot of work to bring this kit to the acceptable standard, so it spent few years on the pile of 'to do' models. And then, a while ago, I

reached for it again. I had a plan! The idea was to build the Renault as an abandoned vehicle, left in the middle of a forest somewhere. I wanted to get rid of most of the useless details and strip the body bare. I even left the windows out, bar one. The interior is poor in the kit, so I decided to chuck lot of debris and spare parts inside and cover the lot in rust, grime, old tarpaulins

and fallen leaves. I discarded all door handles and other items that could be stripped from the real vehicle, before it was left to rot. The dashboard was drilled out and I placed few wires sticking out of the holes, as though the speedometer had been ripped out by thieves. I chucked the spare tyre inside for good measure, plus both bumpers. To finish the job inside the cabin I used liberal quantities of AK Interactive 'Slimy Grime', and its lighter version for the highlights. A couple of birch seeds to depict leaves, and a few Plus Model leaves completed the look. The body of the car was modified too. I opened up the driver's door and cut away both rear fenders. I discarded the right fender and used the left-side part – rusted off the body – close to the car body. The wheels were cut down to simulate the 'sunken into the dirt' effect. The rear right tyre was placed on the roof of the car to hold the tarpaulin in place. The tarpaulin itself was made from a disposable tissue treated with white glue. I wanted to depict the roof and bonnet as if somebody had stamped on them, creating indentations. To simulate this effect I cut chunks of plastic away and replaced them with aluminium foil. When the CA glue (superglue) I used to affix the foil had cured, I pressed the middle of it to dent it. Using this technique, it's possible to produce believable-looking dents and damage. All the decorative trim on the bonnet and front of the car was removed and I drilled their fixing holes instead. I left one little bit of the trim on the front of the car to suggest where someone tried to pull it away from the body. I made this little piece with aluminium foil strip. Inside the headlights I fitted the reflectors and one of the lights received the lens and its decorative rim. I weathered the lights accordingly and left few wires sticking out of the other headlight. I also removed one hinge from the bonnet.

PAINTING PROCESS

I used the salt and hairspray technique, as it is one of my favourite finishing methods when it comes to building very weathered subjects. First I applied plastic primer, followed by the first colour of flat brown, sealed with flat varnish. When the paint and varnish had cured I wetted the surface by spraying tap water from my airbrush and sprinkled few grains of salt over the model. Then the grey colour was applied, followed by liberal amount of hairspray. Finally, the light blue top-colour was sprayed on. I used a toothbrush and tap water to remove the salt and to lightly scratch the top layer of paint to expose the colours underneath it. When I was happy with the effect, I used a sponge to dab on Vallejo Black-Brown acrylic paint on the lower parts of the car, the most damaged areas and edges of the bodywork. FULL-BUILD: DIORAMA HELLER 1:24 RENAULT 4CV l KIT NO.12053 Halfway through the weathering process, we can see the rust-toned under-colour

V and making it ready for colour-washes. I used a

brown 'wash over the whole car giving the paint nicely 'rustic' tinge. A black pin-wash (localised colour-wash) followed in a few places. I added a scratchbuilt windscreen-wiper arm and made it to look like someone tried to pull it off it, but failed. At the back of the car I added the filler cap surround, but removed the cap and drilled it out. I painted it with Alclad II Dull Aluminium and used Tamiya Weathering Master 'Snow' to produce the oxidised effect of weathered aluminium. I weathered the car with various Mig Productions pigments (Industrial Dirt, Dry Mud, Fresh Mud) and on the roof and bonnet where the body was dented, I placed a few fallen leaves, sticks and twigs I'd collected from my back garden. 'Wet Effects' from Mig Productions gave it damp look and some AK Interactive 'Slimy Grime' added the colour. And there we have it, a slightly different way of presenting this model from Heller! l

CORVETTE IN A CLASS OF ITS OWN Revell’s all-new 1:144 HMCS Snowberry is a far more practical proposition than the magnificent but challenging 1:72 kit of the same subject

F

or many years, the big 1:72 kit (formerly by Matchbox) of the Royal Navy Flower-Class Corvette appeared in Revell’s line-up and over the decades many a modeller tackled this flawed but impressive model. It was never a kit that could be built in a hurry, even ‘from the box’ but now though, Revell have released an altogether more approachable model of the same subject in 1:144, precisely half the size of its bigger brother. It’s an exciting proposition and after an inspection of the sprues, it’s clear that this is a very highly detailed production. The kit’s hull measures approximately forty-three and a half centimetres in length and sports some of the best hull-plate effect pattern we’ve seen on a ship kit; there are no trench-like panel lines or

huge rivets, just partially overlapped ‘plates’ with fine grooves between them, really excellent. The portholes feature rain-guards over them and the port/starboard hawsepipes are well formed. Where appropriate, the deck exhibits delicately moulded planking and as with the hull-plates, this is subtle and free from over-emphasised raised/ recessed detailing. The multi-part, roll-off mine racks are finely formed although the mouldings that depict the rows of mines are split in two halves lengthways and will need precise cementing to avoid the creation of a visible seam line. The sideways-firing depth charge projectors are pretty decent but their bases are moulded solid and would benefit from either hollowing out or rebuilding from plastic card; not a major issue, just a

matter of refinement and practicality. The smaller, deck-mounted details are as well done as the hull and the deck are. When it comes to the superstructure railing though, the limits of the injection-moulding technology start to become apparent. The railing looks a little too thick for 1:144 so the enthusiastic modeller might consider replacing it with something finer for a more in-scale effect. With luck, an enterprising aftermarket producer (Eduard perhaps?), might create an aftermarket set for the kit; if it contained the railing only it would help increase the realism of this otherwise superb new 1:144 kit. The second variant of Plus Model’s 1:35 WW2 Italian Pavesi gun-tractor depicts the rubber-tyred machine

his is Plus Model’s second kit of the Italian Pavesi P4 tractor, the first having the early-type ‘wire’ wheels with complex drive-lugs. This release comes with huge but more conventional pneumatic tyres. The kit is a resin production, supplemented by a sheet of photo-etched brass, copper wire and thread. As we have come to expect from this Czech manufacturer, the resin castings are beautifully detailed with sensibly placed sprue attachmentpoints and free from air bubbles. There are thin webs of excess resin within the inner areas of some parts, but this is easy to remove with a sharp scalpel blade (Swann-Morton, of course). The model is comprehensively detailed from top to bottom and comes with a finely rendered replica of the 4.7

litre, 55hp, four-cylinder engine and gearbox. A full set of driver’s controls is provided, along with band-type brakes plus the articulated steering system. The hand-drawn instructions leave a little to be desired, but in practice, with the cleaned-up kit parts laid out in front of you, they provide a decent enough guide. IMPERIAL PAINTSHOP James Hatch gives Revell’s Easy Kit TIE Fighter a quick makeover

T

he Death Star must have had one, but we never saw it. That’s right. There must have been someone painting up Vader’s TIE Fighter spacecraft. Whoever it was though, they might have made a better job of it than they did in Revell paint-works. Okay, this particular kit is designed as a snap-together kit for youngsters, so in that respect, Revell’s pre-painted and weathered parts are perfectly fine. However, as the model itself is a very respectable replica, it’s worth splashing a little paint of your own over it and making it more suitable for display in your man/ woman-cave. The TIE cockpit consists of a floor/tub with grating in the foot well, sidewalls with instrumentation, a panelled rear wall and a forward instrument wall a steering unit and seat. There is much pre-applied weathering on show in here, so let’s kill it. After cleaning up seams and flash, Tamiya’s Dark Sea Grey was airbrushed over all internals. That included the inner side of the upper cockpit ball. The latter has no weathering at all and was bare plastic. I also took the opportunity to paint the inside of the hatch and opening mechanism.

SPACE ODDITY

Time to apply some light and shade. For this, I mixed the base coat with an equal quantity of Tamiya Flat White and airbrushed this into the centres of panels and open areas. Next, I mixed the base coat with some Flat Black and then finely sprayed this around the edges and corners of detail and into recesses. To airbrush this more precisely, I remove the crown cap from my airbrush and brought the needle in more closely to the model. Just be careful not to bend and damage the needle when doing this. For the interior of the upper cockpit ‘ball’, both the light and dark shades were mottled over the base-coat, just to break it up a little. To finish, a few passes of very thin base-coat were applied, helping to blend together the other tones. Once left to cure, I airbrushed a coat of Klear

it a little easier to detail paint over a gloss surface. The details were picked out with Vallejo paints. I tried to apply a little extra red where I could on the consoles, simply to make up for the lack of moulded

‘lighting’. To keep this vibrant, Vallejo White was first applied and then the red painted over the top.

SITTING IN A TIN CAN

Once detail painting was complete, another coat of Klear sealed everything in and after a few hours, I applied a dark brown colour-wash into recesses, bringing out details. Once dry, the excess was removed with a cotton bud. I wanted to add a little more contrast to the interior, so I airbrushed Gunze H20 Flat Clear over the parts and then used Tamiya Weathering Pastels to accentuate the surfaces. I applied this with a soft brush, and not the wand that comes in the set.

OUTSIDE

Assembly is very straightforward, especially as this was designed to be assembled by younger modellers. However, I opened up the main connecting holes on the upper fuselage shell, otherwise, the fit is very tight and I couldn’t vouch for a good fit all around. After drilling these out a little, the cockpit entry hatch was assembled and installed in the upper fuselage, before both fuselage halves were brought together, trapping the forward window and then glued with Tamiya Extra Thin cement. I have to say the fit really is excellent. A little seam removal was conducted and the laser cannon units fitted. Mr Dissolved Putty was applied around a very fine gap that existed along the edge of the forward cockpit glazing.

Dark Sea Grey and Flat White were used to add highlights and shadows to the cockpit module and outriggers. This was then blended with another thin coat of base colour

NEW KILLER STAR

With this complete, the whole model was given a couple of coats of Klear so that it would have a protective, gloss coat before I applied some colour-washes to the various panel lines and raised details. For this, I used Dark Grey panel line wash from AMMO, which was perfect for the

light paintwork of the TIE Fighter. This was left to dry and the excess removed using a cotton bud. A number of small details were now painted with Vallejo paints, such as the laser cannon tips. Final assembly consisted of fitting the outer frames to the wings and plugging the wings to the fuselage. A

TECHSPEC... simple build, and one that I would like to think shows that the Revell kit can be redeemed with only a little extra work. Revell’s TIE Fighter is quite a cheap kit, I seem to recall picking mine up for only £5 online! Thank you to the Starman for the memories and inspiration. This is for you. You will be missed. ●

Upon opening we found there was a bit of linseed oil in the tube that needed draining off, but the paint itself seems of good quality, if a little gritty. The material is more liquid than regular oils and will take a little getting used to, but they have a lot of potential for the weathering of AFVs. It's important to note that these are first-generation 3D printed parts, not resin castings that have used the printed part as a master.
