his model has been in my stash for some years and was bought at a show off a club stand, with the added bonus of a photo-etched set and a turned barrel in the box! I'm not sure if the seller knew it was in the box or not. The Type 97 was the best known tank that the Imperial Japanese Army put into the field in the Second World War. It was built in larger numbers than any other Japanese medium tank of this era. It first saw action in China during the late 1930s and was still in widespread use in 1945. In addition its hull was used for a variety of

other armoured vehicles and SPGs. The initial production of the Type 97 was armed with a 57mm low velocity short barrelled gun with 120 rounds of ammunition split with 80HE and 40AP. In addition to this two 7.7mm machine guns were mounted. One in the hull and one in the rear of the turret. In 1941 production of the Type 97 moved to the improved ShinHoTo (new turret) Chi-Ha. With a new, purpose-built 47mm high velocity anti-tank gun and larger turret. The ShinHoTo Chi-ha first saw action in the Philippines in May 1942 with the 7th Tank Regiment.

GETTING STARTED

Tamiya released their kit of the type 97 Chi-Ha back in 1976 followed in 1987 with the later type 97 ShinHoTo Chi-Ha 'new turret' and it's a testament to Tamiya that this model is still around. It does not come as a surprise that work on the model begins with the lower hull and suspension units. Though the assembly of the bell-crank suspension looks complicated, it’s typical of Tamiya that they have made this job relatively easy with a simplified construction method. The locating holes are differing sizes, so making it a straightforward fit of

parts. As with all Tamiya kits of this era the model was tooled to be motorised, so you could actually drive it around the living room floor. It's because of this the wheels have the polycaps that we are used to, even with the modern releases from Tamiya. The only area where some care is needed is the assembly of the suspension arms; each arm has four wheels attached and they must be around the correct way.

in the open position to add a little interest. The head lamp was drilled out, then a little tin foil inserted and polished with a cotton bud. The hull machine gun was attached onto the front plate before cementing onto the front of the upper hull, the track guards were trimmed and sanded down to a more in scale appearance and a little damage was also inflicted to the fenders with a powered hand drill. The next step was to add the hull fittings, starting with the exhaust boxes and their covers. Plastic card and mesh from the Eduard set were used to cover the mufflers and in doing so,

vastly improve this area of the model. The pioneer tools were then attached to the hull sides. To help give the AFV a more lived-in look, two rolled up tarpaulins from the Allied Vehicles Accessory set by Tamiya (35229) were attached to the pioneer tools and as you would expect the fit wasn’t brilliant, so AB putty was used to improve this by filling the gaps. They would be painted with the rest of the model. Continuing the theme, the vehicle jack was looking a little tired and benefited from a some photo-etch and the mechanism drilled out with hand drill. Other small

parts such as the locking handles for the transmission covers on the front of the hull were sanded to a more in scale appearance. Grab handles were also provided, but are a little weak, so I decided to replace them with ones fashioned from thin wire, cemented with a CA glue into locating holes that I had drilled. The engine louvre was left off at this stage so I could get to the radiator grill in order to weather this area at a later stage. A camouflage net was fashioned from a piece of book binding material soaked in PVA glue and draped over the rear decks and a little stowage

was placed in logical areas whilst the net was still wet. A suitable length of rope was also added to secure the boxes in place (also found in the kit box). One of the two helmets hanging off the rear of the vehicle was decorated with the same material as the camouflage net. The rubber on the wheels were distressed with a file to suggest wear and tear; they would be left off the model for ease of painting and to leave easy access to the lower hull for the weathering stage.

V in WWII was officially

khaki brown. The Japanese shade was an ochre colour and all vehicles were normally sprayed as they left the factory. Tanks and armoured vehicles were then camouflage painted by their crews in the field. The first stage was to undercoat the model with Tamiya XF-66 Light Grey, which was then followed with a pre-shading layer of XF-9 Hull Red. Once this had dried, a base coat of dark yellow was mixed. The base colours were deliberately kept light as the subsequent weathering process would have the effect of toning down them considerably and it's always easier to tone down a light colour than it is to lighten a dark colour. Mixed from XF-59 Desert Yellow, and XF-78 Deck Tan, the resulting shade is very reminiscent of the dark yellow seen on wartime German vehicles. This was then airbrushed on in three light coats. To add depth to the base colour, a very light 'glaze' of X-24 Clear Yellow was needed, heavily thinned with distilled water and applied using a large brush over the tan base colour. Care was taken not to allow the yellow to pool around raised details (excess can be removed with a clean brush). I decided to brush paint the brown and green camouflage colours directly over the base coat. To be honest, in this

particular case I was just too lazy to mask the tank! I came up with a mix of red/ brown using XF-64 Red Brown and XF-52 Flat Earth then I added two small drops of Tamiya retarder so the mix was relatively thin. I applied the brown with a number two brush making sure to apply the paint mix thinly and to repeat the process to avoid any brush marks. It is critical that the brush is kept clean; if this is overlooked small dried flakes of paint will appear in subsequent coats and ruin the finish. After the first coat I was left with a translucent covering of paint. It took three coats with at least a couple of hours drying time between each pass.

The green was a home made mix of XF-71 Cockpit Green, XF-25 Park Green and a drop of XF-26 Deep Green and the process was the same as the brown. This was then sealed with a coat of X-22 Clear to protect it from the robust weathering process and to prepare for the decals. The markings I chose were for the 7th Tank Regiment Luzon Island and the star on the front plate of the tank was picked out with gold paint. This was often painted over in the camouflage colours, but I thought it would add a little interest to the finish. Once dry, a colour-wash of Humbrol Matt 98 Chocolate was applied, which helps to give a little depth to the model.

COLOUR-WASHES AND WEATHERING

Panel lines and raised details were defined with localised colour-washes of burnt umber oil paint. Scratches were painted with a fine brush using Matt 98, the aiming to be subtle and have the chips/ scratches in scale. The weathering started with the lower hull areas. Tamiya textured paint was built up around the running gear and lower areas in general, concentrating on the areas of the large suspension system where the soil would collect naturally. This was followed with dust-coloured 'washes of Humbrol enamels. The

same shades were used on the upper hull to harmonise the model.

FINAL TOUCHES

A quick dip into the spares box rewarded me with some photo-etched ferns which were attached to thin fuse wire (wound around the main gun barrel prior to painting) to suggest some local camouflage employed by the crew. I wanted portray a vehicle that had broken down and had been abandoned whilst being recovered. A tow cable made from picture hanging wire was attached to the front towing eye. The tracks would have been polished by the

sand and soil of the Pacific islands, but when left for an length of time would turn rusty. Orange and brown oil paints were 'washed onto the tracks that had been hand painted with Matt 98. After drying over night Tamiya textured paint was worked into the links, then removed with a damp cotton bud, leaving a very convincing effect. I finished with a light dusting of PE spanners to dress the engine decks. Using some modern paint and weathering techniques, older kits definitely still have life in them, as this project proves! ●

KIT PREVIEW KINETIC 1:48 T-HARRIER T.2/TT.2A/T.2N/T.4/T.4N/T.8 TWO-SEAT TRAINER ● KIT NO.K48040

We take a look at Kinetic’s latest addition to their Harrier family, the T.2 twin-seat trainer

JUMP JET WITH T A JUMP SEAT! he two-seat version of the Harrier has always looked rather amazing, the double canopy giving this already unusual-looking machine an even more bulbous, insect-like appearance. Kinetic’s new kit is now on release and it offers a whole gamut of variants that includes the RAF thimble-nosed T.4, the option most British modellers are likely to choose. Construction begins logically with the twin cockpit and it all looks remarkably well detailed as standard, with nicely depicted ejector seats, side consoles with raised detailing and equally well rendered instrument panels. A small photo-etched fret is supplied and this carries the seats’ harnesses, airframe details and more. The four thrustvectoring jet nozzles – so characteristic of the Harrier – can be angled simultaneously thanks to simple but effective linkage mechanism that is built into the fuselage when the halves are joined. The nozzles themselves are elegant one-piece mouldings. The canopy

parts feature pre-applied MDCs (Miniature Detonation Cords; the wobbly lines in the top of each canopy) and even if they are perhaps a little too faint, this is by far the best way to depict these items. The kit includes the option of standard, ‘tall’ and RWR (radar warning receiver) tail fins and they simply fit to the rear fuselage extension according to the version you are modelling; same goes with the two type of nose-cone and tail ‘stings’. It’ll be well worth investing in a highlighter pen and marking the instructions to reveal the various parts specific to the version you are building, as there are many choices to be made throughout the booklet. Kinetic are generous with the underwing stores in this kit, providing 100 and 190 gallon fuel tanks plus gun pod. The pylons are moulded in two halves and feature separately braces for improved detail, a nice touch. The markings options are as follows;

ack in 2015, Belkits released the highly anticipated Mk.1 Escort model in the blue Timo Mäkinen livery. The following year they released the Roger Clark 1972 version in both left and right hand drive form. As soon as I saw them I knew I had to build one, but I wasn’t sure which. So I bought the Roger Clark right hand drive version; brilliant! A short time after Studio27 then bought out the fabulous-looking Pepsi livery decal sheet. The next stage was to locate the Hobby Design upgrade pack as it looked like a great way to go and knowing HD, there was going to be detail upon detail. In the pack there are three photo-etch frets loaded with detail plus turned metal rivets and that sticky backed seat belt material to finish.

I then had a vision of the direction in my build. This was going to be a newly restored classic Timo Mäkinen rally car that was to be used in historic meets. So with that comes new rules to comply with in order to compete such as upgraded bucket seats, fire and safety systems, wiring, electric cut-offs and so on. For the seats I set my eyes on Hobby Designs' fabulous-looking

‘Sparco pro ADV’ racing seats as they really looked the part. Finely cast resin seats with PE mounting brackets and seat decals are included. Finally, I noticed a real let down in the alloy ‘Minilites’ wheel supplied in my box. They seemed over-complicated and quite difficult to fit the tyres over. On the subject of tyres, Belkits offer us two complete

sets of finely moulded rubber tyres to choose from; gravel or mud which was a nice touch. So I set on searching to find some replacement alloys only to find that Renaissance had already got this covered! I was set to start.

display of finely moulded parts, a small PE fret, some ribbon for the seat belts in blue and black, some metal badge stickers, the body shell which was presented in its own box and a clear, well printed decal sheet. That didn’t matter to me as I only really needed a few decals from it to add to the car, as the Studio27 set covered the

rest. I set about prepping the body by sanding away mould seams and flash, of which there wasn’t really that much. The body is moulded in really chunky polystyrene so it’s quite rigid and easy to work with. I also noticed the plastic is quite soft so correcting any issues didn’t take that long. The instructions call out to drill holes, depending on which version you are building; left

hand or right hand drive; Timo’s rally car is a left hand drive version. All holes were drilled around the vehicle according to choice. Timo's car has the fuel flap on the left so that meant the other side needed filling and sanding smooth. I was now ready for primer and pre-paint checking. I airbrushed the body with Zero Paints Grey filler primer in several light

layers, let it dry then hit it with various sanding grades to smooth any issues away and to check all looked good. I was then ready for the first layer of colour. With Zero Paints, I prefer to use the same brand of colour system from primer through to clear coat to avoid any compatibility issues, plus I’m happy working with this range. Pure Brilliant White was the colour of choice and it went on a treat. Three to four very light layers was all I needed. It’s very important to go steady with solid colours as there’s no hiding or avoiding mistakes when they happen. Once the white had cured, I clear coated the body in Zero’s single pack, ready-mixed lacquer to seal the white and create a smooth base to decal over. Later I would use the two-pack clear system.

V I needed it smooth as the

shape of the flared arches meant decalling those red and blue side long stripes over them wasn’t going to be an easy task. Whilst I left the body to cure for forty-eight hours I turned my attention to the Hobby Design set. I decided to build up the ‘egg box’ front grille from one of the frets. Belkits supply this with their etch set as a two-dimensional version but Hobby Design’s was so much better. It required fifteen separate parts to build up, the use of some bent-nosed tweezers, very careful superglue application and a whole lot of patience. The end result was very rewarding and worth the work.

DECALLING THE BODY

Over to the Studio27 replacement decals. I used what references I could to make sure I got it right as this kind of visual adaption work is always worth a second look. The Studio27 decals are beautifully printed and easy to work with. Armed with Microsol (part 1) and Microset (part 2), a hairdryer, some cotton buds and various other paraphernalia, I started with the long side decals then progressed around the body adding all that was required. The decals laid nicely over those awkward areas, gentle persuasion with a brush soaked in Microset and a low heated hairdryer really helped the decals conform to each angle and panel.

The author wanted the steering wheel to have a padded look to it that was different from the racing seats. So a textured paint was used, then coloured and various other details were applied

INTERNAL WORK

This is where the real fun begins. I dry-fitted all the parts, then set about adapting and upgrading. Firstly the Hobby Design upgrade pack has some internal parts to enhance the finish like a 3D dash display, some timer pieces and the rear panel on the back of the tub. I replaced the co-driver timing tools with etched parts, upgraded the centre console by sanding away the moulded buttons and replacing them with turned metal ones plus a host of other small details. I enhanced the

steering wheel by drilling out the centre holes and also repositioned the fire extinguisher and added some electric cabling for activation. On the subject of cabling I added in braided fuel lines, handbrake cable and electrical lines too. The most noticeable enhancements are

the gorgeous Hobby Design resin Sparco Pro ADV racing seats. They are cast very nicely and are supplied with PE mounts and a nice set of ‘Sparco’ decals. The seats were a bit of a squeeze with the mounts so instead I opted to just stick them straight down to the floorpan.

MICROBALLOONS

Over to painting them - the fun part. I opted for a glossy rear face and suede-looking front seat cover. Zero Paints grey filler primer first, sanded that back then covered them both in Zero Paints Jet Black. Then it was over to the front of the seats. Microballoons are generally

used to bulk out epoxy fillers. Or they make for awesomelooking seat material. I used Zero Paints matt black and airbrushed a very wet coat onto the surface, then generously poured the Microballoons onto the wet surface. Left it to dry, tapped off the excess then covered the fronts with Zero Matt Black for colour. Once the whole part cures you can then handle it but be delicate with the treated areas. I then applied the Sparco logos, built up a six-point harness and glued in those turned metal rivets to finish a pleasing Sparco seat.

CHASSIS

Under the chassis is a fairly simple affair so a great coating of colour and imagination will help breath some life into it. I airbrushed the chassis in

white, clear coated and left to dry whilst I worked on the parts. It’s important to note that I’d recommend fitting the chassis parts after you marry it all together as the bodyshell fitment is very tight and requires a lot of careful handling. I decided to add a heat-staining effect the exhaust system and some detail too. I glued some Top Studio weld lines to the bends and joints. I also noticed it was fixed in with rivets so I replicated those too with turned metal rivets and some Bare Metal Foil. The whole lot was painted gloss black and covered in Alclad2’s Chrome. Once dried it was sealed with Aqua Gloss to protect the delicate materials. After that I set about using the Hot Metal colours with varied intensity to the

hottest and coolest parts of the system. The main engine block was painted with different metallics, some RS blue colours for the steering system, suspension shocks and some careful paint detailing along the way. Hobby Design supply some nice etch parts for under here to, the skid pan under the engine and a nice etch cover with screws to cover the rear differential. I added some turned metal Top Studio air valves to the Renaissance wheels, primed them with Zero Paints primer, went over with Gloss Silver and sealed with 1k clear. Wrapped the tyres around them and fitted them all.

CLOSING STAGES

Over to the final areas on the body now. I carefully masked around the front and rear window rubbers then airbrushed them with Zero Paints Rubber Black. The glass just clicks into

I then went round and fitted various PE fittings including a painted front mesh, quick release bonnet pins, boot catches, some etched Escort and Ford lettering for the bonnet and boot and some Hobby Design photo-etch front wipers. I drilled holes into the fog lights and wired them up with some vinyl tubing to simulate electric cabling. Once all that was finished I was ready to squeeze the body over the chassis. I glued the interior tub to the chassis then set about carefully edging the body on. It wasn’t a pleasant experience at all but eventually I coaxed them together. It was a good job I hadn’t fixed any under-chassis parts in place as handling would have been very difficult indeed. Once it was all together I glued the underpinnings in place and then added some blue-coloured mudflaps complete with Ford logos in for good measure. Job done!

The author felt the box stock tail lights were lacking in detail and shape, so some styrene scratch built versions were made. The finished parts compared to the box stock versions are visually a better replacement

The Hobby Design photo-etch wiper set is a really nice upgrade to the chunky box stock versions. True to Hobby Design fashion, this was always going to be an intricate task but a rewarding one all the same

SUMMARY

This project for me was a real labour of love and a very enjoyable build. All the parts went together nicely and I learnt a lot of new methods and techniques along the way. Belkits have released a wonderful kit that I'd recommend to anybody to have a go at. I dedicated this project to the legendary great flying Finn himself Timo Mäkinen, who sadly passed away in May 2017. His legacy will always live on. ●

The ‘MOAB’ – Massive Ordnance Air Blast, nicknamed the ‘Mother Of All Bombs’ – gained notoriety recently and now Eduard have created a detailed miniature of this monstrosity. The bomb is cast in Eduard’s top grade resin and it carries very fine detail in all areas. The airbrake fin is also cast in resin and replicates the ‘egg-crate’ design of these parts. The model also comes with a fantastically detailed cradle formed from PE brass and this requires some careful assembly.

LIFE IMITATES ART Toyota pays tribute to Tamiya's mighty 1:10 radio-controlled Hilux Bruiser with a one-off, full-size replica

F

ollowing on from the 'little and large' videos shot earlier this year in conjunction with Toyota and The Hobby Company, Toyota has now gone one further by producing a full size tribute to the Tamiya Bruiser. The Hilux Bruiser – strictly a one-off – is based on the new Hilux Extra Cab model. To scale-up the original model’s big-wheeled look, Arctic Trucks installed their ‘AT35’ conversion, fitting wheels with massive 35-inch tyres. This called for engineering changes, too, with modified, up-rated suspension, new gear ratios in the differential and flared wheel arches. The wheels themselves were given a chromed finish to match the Tamiya model and the bodywork was wrapped in a high-metallic Diamond Blue vinyl by the skilled team at Funkee Fish. The Tamiya Bruiser’s famous 'Hog Heaven' livery and all its other decals were digitally reproduced, along with a faithful reproduction of distinctive tri-colour stripes that run the length of the body and frame the bonnet, complete with a Tamiya logo on the rear quarter. On the tailgate, the TOYOTA name looks as though it has been stamped into the metal, an effect achieved using

a special dome gel. The same material was used to simulate the raised black window surrounds on the rear section of the cab. Just like the Tamiya icon, the Hilux Bruiser has a louvred rear window. In fact, it was impossible to install the actual glass, so a two-dimensional print was used that looks just like the real thing, even at close quarters. Expert model-maker and fabricator Robert Selway was responsible for recreating some of the details in 1:1 scale, including a (replica) on/off switch in the load bed, R-shape body clips, tubular bumpers and rock sliders. The bonnet clips are magnetic and for show only, while the bumpers and rock sliders were fabricated from stainless steel exhaust tubing and wrapped in white vinyl to make them look like the model’s plastic parts. Toyota’s Hilux Bruiser even has a large antenna behind the cab, to reinforce the impression of it being a radio-controlled model. James Clark, Toyota GB Press Relations Manager, said: “While Hilux is all about capability, owners and all fans of pick-ups and big trucks know a big part of the perience is also about having fun. In that spirit, we wanted to do something

had fully intended to have this model finished for the full-build article this issue, but to quote John Lennon, “Life is what happens to you while you are busy making other plans” and thus, I only managed to complete the cockpit in time for this month's deadline, as well as prepare the rest of the kits parts for painting and subsequent assembly. The kit takes a middle line between extreme ease of assembly and complex detail, so we are presented with all the main structural elements; seat, foot-rests, rudder pedals, MG151 cannon breech enclosure (the large grey box between the pilot's knees) but there is no representation of the prominent cabling that hung from the Bf109's cockpit's sidewalls. To accurately depict these looms in moulded plastic whilst keeping them easy to paint might have been problem, and many modellers will want to add these themselves. The fuel-level pipe is represented though, and I decided to cut out the middle section and replace it with stretched clear sprue to simulate the observation glass. This was an easy enough job; I simply cemented the new clear portion in place and when dry, masked it off. I used Mission Models' RLM66 grey for the cockpit, giving it a light colour-wash using Tamiya Panel Line Accent Color Black and Brown. Details were touched-in by hand, again using Mission Models' acrylics. So, I shall keep on working on this kit and I hope to have it ready for the next issue! ● Availability; Tamiya models and accessories are widely available from good model shops and online. Tamiya's 9 SPH

amiya's M109 originates back to the Italeri kit of early eighties. Tamiya have added sprues from their M113 which include three figures, Vietnam War-era weapons and an armoured cupola. Despite the obvious age of the kit, and by today's standards, it stands up well. The tracks are new and of the link and length type although I'll be using the Friul tracks in this build. After a quick search for reference pictures for inspiration, and the build could begin.

CONSTRUCTION

The first to do was to build the basic structures. The hull comes in five pieces and fits together well although care must be taken to line up the side sections. The turret comes in four pieces and will need to be taped in place to get a good join (it's suggested in the instructions to fit the breech at this point, but I opted to do this much later). With the sub-assemblies put to one side, attention was turned to road wheels, giving the tyres a used look with a 'medium' sanding stick. The wheels in general are well moulded but the rims are a little vague. The next stage is to clean up the torsion bars and fit them to the hull. I placed the hull onto a flat surface to make sure everything was level and once I was happy with this I left everything to harden. I next proceeded with the rear spade assemblies and these suffered from annoying injection-pin marks which took some time to clean up. Once assembled these were left to one side to be fitted later, as were the rear mud-guards. All of the other hull details such as tow eyes were now fitted. The stowage bins were improved by replacing the kit parts with plastic card lids which were more to scale. A little 'damage' was inflicted on them for more realism and I did replace the two handles on the drivers hatch for handles fabricated

from wire, inserted into pre-drilled holes. The small stopper was improved with plastic card. The exhaust was textured to give a more realistic look before being fitted and weld seams were improved with a pyrogravure. This is a very handy tool that's similar to a soldering iron but with a finer point. It's old school, but still has its place in modelling. Two brackets to hold the poles that support the chicken wire were fabricated from thin wire which was inserted into pre-drilled holes on the hull side. This was a field modification and not on all M109s. The drive sprockets and wheels were left separate for the time being to ease painting, which only left the gun travel lock and spades to complete the hull. Time now to turn to the weapon.

BUSINESS END

The gun breech was constructed first and a small amount of filling and sanding was required, but this is to be expected with a model that dates back to the 1980s. The recuperator was built next. Paying attention to the join lines, I cut down the length as per the instructions. I also cut off the two round circles on the flat surface and replaced them with ones punched out of plastic card using

my punch and die set. The barrel itself went together well and I used Humbrol Liquid Poly on the join lines. A clamp was applied to guarantee a good joint and when it was dry I used my Alec Scraper tool to smooth off the barrel seams. The next job was to fit the turret stowage bins to the rear plate. The fit, once again, was very good apart from the dreaded seam lines on some of the parts. The moulding of the two hinges for the side doors on the turret are a weak part of the kit and were improved with plastic card and thin wire. Two weapons mounts are provided in the kit for the commander's .50cal machine gun, one for the earlier mount – reminiscent of US WWII vehicles – and the armoured cupola. A quick internet search showed that the earlier mount was used in conjunction with the shield, this would work perfectly with what I had in mind. The cradle and shield went together well, with only the obligatory ejector pin marks and flash to worry about. The tools and tripod for the .50cal that are mounted on to the turret roof weren’t fitted at this time as I planed on littering the top of the turret with sand bags. These items were destined to be stowed in the rear bins.

FULL-BUILD: POST-WAR MILITARY VEHICLE TAMIYA/ITALERI 1:35 M109 US SELF-PROPELLED HOWITZER VIETNAM WAR ● KIT NO.37013

THOSE EXTRA BITS V ALL After a little research it

was apparent that Vietnam AFVs, in most cases, had rolls of wire mesh fencing to protect the vehicle against RPG attack. A particular ‘109 caught my eye with the mesh stowed in a field modification, of two brackets welded onto the hull side to carry the mesh. This was straightforward to replicate with thin wire. The mesh is a piece of wedding veil cut to size and held in place with watered down PVA glue. Other details include picture framing wire to replace the kit’s tow cable and a dive into the spares box produced two resin Alice packs and camp beds. A .50cal tripod was thrown in for good measure. The communication wire which is mounted on a spool on the rear armoured door was fashioned from thin wire.

TRACKS

Tamiya have upgraded the kits track to link-and-length, but from the start I intended to use the Friulmodel tracks. To start with I cut the track pins from the wire provided, then, in turn, the holes of each link were drilled out. Though laborious, this is essential to allow the pins to fit correctly. The track was then built up in the traditional method. There are a number of pre-formed links that fit around the drive and idler wheels, a little time was needed to work out the location of these links in the make-up of the track. Once one tracks were completed, it was a case of mirroring the second track to the first. I found that marking the pre-formed links with a marker pen helped hugely with the construction of both tracks.

V PAINTING Apart from a couple of

tweaks here and there, the kit isn’t too bad and needs little in the way of additional work to bring it up to a reasonable standard. The painting process is where the model is really brought to life and after a little research I was keen to get started. An overall olive drab finish can look lifeless and toy-like if not treated to some vigorous weathering, and thankfully armoured hardware from the Vietnam conflict falls into this category. The model was undercoated with matt black, then shaded with Tamiya XF-62 Olive Drab. Further coats of lightened mixes XF-62 followed. The whole model was coated with matt varnish to protect the finish. The lower hull received numerous colour-washes of Humbrol 62 Matt Leather and 'washes of burnt sienna followed to add a little depth, followed again with 'washes of Matt 62. I wanted the effect of layers of distinctive red Vietnam dust and mud. The upper hull also received washes of burnt sienna and black oil paint, thinned with white spirit following in the same theme as the lower hull I applied thinned localised washes of Humbrol 62 to the weld seams and recessed areas of the '109 to suggest that these areas had been collecting dust and dirt for some time. Keeping the areas that the crew moved around on the vehicle reasonably dust free, I opted to use Mig PO31 to enhance the finish rather than to use washes or

sprayed layers. The pigment was applied using an old paint brush, concentrating on the weld seams, then removed with a cotton bud leaving the dust to collect in the desired areas. Minor scratches and subtle shifts in tonal effects on the monotone green surfaces were achieved by using artist’s paint pencils, a simple and very effective way of getting a convincing finish on a model. With the lower hull at a point where I could move on, attention was turned to the turret.

TURRET GRAPHICS

Before any painting of the turret could take place, I had to apply the graffiti to the turret side. First the area was sprayed Tamiya XF-57 Buff. Next, the letters were cut from Tamiya tape and placed into position and surprisingly this did take a couple of goes, but I was eventually happy with the positioning. A couple of light coats of XF-62 followed, then it was a case of removing the tape and fixing any areas that needed attention, a light coat of matt varnish followed to protect the lettering from damage.

The commander figure comes from the Alpine range. Base layers of Humbrol enamels were first painted on to the uniform areas of the figure. Then shaded and highlighted with oils. The flesh areas were first brush-painted acrylics then oils were used to build up the flesh tones.

CONCLUSION

Tamiya’s M109 has a new lease of life and well worth a second look. New sprues and link and length tracks enable the modeller to build a Vietnam War variant. A very sound kit with no real problems, it’s fair to say though, that it is a little weak around the hatches, but nothing that caused any real problems. A real change from the current batch of kits on the market today and it was refreshing to build a simpler kit. ●

A variety of new, re-issued and revised AFVs are coming from Tamiya TAMIYA 1:35 GERMAN ASSAULT PIONEER TEAM & GOLIATH SET (35357)

This is an all-new kit from Tamiya, depicting the remote-controlled Sd.Kfz.302 Leichter Ladungsträger, ironically nicknamed 'Goliath' for its diminutive size. Tamiya's model represents the initial Ausf.A version which was electrically powered; later variants would be larger and driven by a Zündapp 703cc motorcycle engine, in order to carry a heavier demolition charge. The kit features link-and-length tracks and the single links are truly tiny; tweezers will be needed during their assembly, although thankfully the suspension is moulded integrally with each side panel. Two complete Goliath models are included in the box, which is a nice bonus, although no transport trailer is provided. The control cable compartment features a separate hatch with cable reel inside; a length of copper wire comes in the box, plus the control box for the operator, allowing the vehicle(s) to be modelled 'in action' with their crew. Detail is subtle and in-scale throughout. Three figures come with the set and they are very much in Tamiya's new style, with natural poses, realistically creased uniforms and excellent hands. The latter are so often moulded as simple blobs and can ruin the look of otherwise decent figures; Tamiya's are very well done. The kit also comes with a range of infantry equipment, including the Karabiner K98 rifle, MP40 sub-machine gun, binoculars, P.08 Luger holster/magazine pouch, bread-bag and water cans. This new release is a very neat 'vignette in a box' and can be assembled and painted quickly for a satisfying result. ● Availability; Tamiya models and accessories are widely available from good model shops and online. TAMIYA 1:35 US MEDIUM TANK M4A3E8 SHERMAN 'EASY EIGHT' KOREAN WAR

Tamiya has re-issued the recent 1:35 M4A3E8, this time with Korean War-specific features such as a late-production exhaust deflector, revised engine deck, double-pin T80 tracks, field telephone and a new .50cal MG. Two marking options are included; 'Rice's Red Devils' (with new colour scheme based upon the most up-to-date reference sources) of C Company, 89th Tank Battalion, 25th Infantry Division, 1951 and a vehicle from C Company, 70th Heavy Tank Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division, 1950. Tamiya's old but still good Russian Field Car GAZ67B (35021) will also be found in the box. ●

This is the latest release in the popular Tamiya-Italeri series and it further updates the model released as Item 37012 in 2012, with further moulding improvements, brand new components plus photo-etched parts. The kit also includes Tamiya figures, accessories, full instructions and decals, all packaged in a new Tamiya box. Updates from Kit No.37012 include; cementable and paintable one-piece tracks, a replica of the (previously omitted) gun muzzle velocity system (MVS), hull-front spare track links, a fret of photo-etched parts to recreate turret rear basket mesh, circular panel cover and water tank strap buckles, decals for three vehicles plus the Tamiya ration-box sheet. ●

The turret and engine access hatches can be fitted in the open positions to show off the detail and whilst not shown as ‘openable’, the hull doors could probably be fitted open too. The turret includes a neat replica of the 25mm anti-tank gun, acceptable for its time in the mid-late 1930, but obsolete by the start of the war. In the box is the accessory sprue from the UE Tractor kit and this also provides a commander figure for the turret hatch and Tamiya have also provided a new instruction booklet in their own, inimitable style which really are the very best in the business. Coupled with a new decal sheet for one French Army machine in overall olive green and a German ‘beute’ vehicle, also in green, we have a very appealing package here.

The model comes with a really nicely done cockpit with separate floor, rear bulkhead/seat frame and sidewall panels. Airfix even provide data placards here, a very thoughtful touch that adds a lot of realism. All the modeller needs to find is a set of harnesses, readily available from Eduard. Two markingsoptions are offered; a Mk.IIA of No.26 Squadron, RAF Army Cooperation Command, Gatwick, Sussex England 1941 and the Tomahawk Mk.II of New Zealander Sgt William Earl Houston from No.112 Squadron, RAF, Libya 1941. The latter is in the Middle Stone/Dark Earth/Azure Blue scheme and looks superb.

Nothing has come of that, but we can wish! The Hanomag SS-100 wasn’t just used to tow the V2 and its ancillary trailers though, it could found at Luftwaffe airfields pulling all types of aircraft and equipment and so could be paired with numerous Tamiya 1:48 fighter kits. Tamiya’s new model is beautifully done, with a modular but well detailed chassis that features individual leaf spring parts, front and rear axles and exhaust system. There’s a lot of detail going on everywhere, with plentiful external features (winch-box, hydraulic air tanks, tool boxes, tow bar, fender steps) plus a well appointed cabin interior, complete with a driver figure. The ideal addition to a 1:48 Luftwaffe airfield presentation.

The airframe detail is impressive, with visible stringer detail on the fuselage. This might be a little too prominent in the bare plastic, but will look more subdued under paint and decals. This release depicts the Mk.I ‘Tropical’ version and comes with six markings options; RAF 274 Squadron, Egypt 1941, RAF 74 Squadron, Malta, 1942, RAF 185 Squadron, Hal Far, Malta, 1941, RAF 73 Squadron, Western Desert 1941, RAF 73 Squadron, El Adam, Libya, 1941 and SAAF No.3 Squadron, Abyssinia, 1941. H145M LUH KSK SURVEILLANCE AND TROOP TRANSPORT www.revell.de/en SCALE 1:32 MATERIALS; IM, WS ITEM NO.04948 Revell originally issued their initial Eurocopter (now Airbus) EC145 kit in 2005 to much acclaim and it has formed the basis of several variants since then, including medevac, police, US Army versions and now this, the surveillance and troop transport H145 LUH KSK for the modern German army. Once the (frustrating) endopening box has disgorged its bagged contents, we can see the kit parts sport some fantastic detail, including lines of raised rivets that really do look good. On a helicopter kit of this size and with this much glazing, the interior needs to be fully appointed, and Revell have not let us down. Everything is in there, from a full set of pilots’ controls, centre console and instrument panel, pilots’ seat armour and optional cabin seating layouts for the surveillance or troop transporter versions. A lot of kit for your money!

he M113 has been present in Tamiya’s catalogue since the mid-1970s and has been a staple of many modellers’ repertoire in the decades since. Other kits of the vehicle have come along in the meantime but now, AFV Club have created what is likely to remain the most sophisticated model of this battlefield bus for years to come. It is a wholly new production which, as you’d expect, comes with a full cabin and driver’s station interior. No engine is provided but its hatches are moulded individually, leaving the door open – pardon the pun – for aftermarket manufacturers to come up with a replica resin powerpack (diesel, of course, for this ‘A1 variant). The insides of the machine appear to have been well researched, with

more accurate proportions to the internal structures and equipment than in previous model releases. Particularly well done is central roof-gunner’s seat ‘tower’ which comprises thirteen components and looks spot-on when compared to images of the real thing. Several optional parts are included, the most noticeable of which being the choice of M2 Browning .50cal MG or M134 Minigun in the ACAV turret. From contemporary photos, the M2 seems far more common in this position but the option is an appealing one. Two M60s and their shielded mounts are supplied for the side-firing positions and other period-correct infantry weapons are included too; M14, M14E2, M21, XM177 and of course

the ubiquitous M16A1. The tracks come in the form of one-piece vinyl items and are very well moulded, with thin edges and well defined guide horns. Modellers might wish to replace them with aftermarket products but the standard tracks are perfectly adequate as they are. Tamiya’s classic M113 ACAV is still a great kit that builds up easily and can be found for very attractive prices online. If you want to spend a little more for a higher level of detail and refinement, then this new kit from AFV Club fits the bill perfectly. ● AVAILABILITY; AFV Club kits and accessories are widely available from good model shops and online. www.pocketbond.co.uk

I did some minor detail work including thinning the gun shield and adding plastic depictions of belts. In order to stop the overall impression becoming too dark, I was proactive in my use of brighter tones. A white undercoat with purple and blue shading provided the base for a thin topcoat using the main colours.

I used the Tamiya detail-up option parts for the tracks, gun barrel and photo-etched grilles. A lacquer paint base was topped off with oil paints and pigment weathering. It took a number of pictures for me to settle upon this one!

This included 140 M1A1 SA Abrams tanks, whose new crews were trained on the deployment and maintenance of these formidable beasts. This new sixty-eight page book from Sabot provides detailed a photo-report on these tanks in use, with some fantastic close-ups that show the rather crusty states they have fallen into. Very usefully, the photographer has closed-in on the IA insignia, showing how some were painted on with stencils and how others were large vinyl stickers which are seen scratched and peeling off. Colour profiles are provided to show where the markings were positioned and as a big bonus, a decals sheet in 1:35 (by Cartograf) is also provided, carrying all you need to convert your M1A1 model. Introduced in 1959, the 105mm-armed M60 and its variants, the M60A1 and M60A3, remained in production into 1987, forming the backbone of the US armoured force until it was supplanted by the M1 Abrams. The M60A2 was armed with a 152mm projector, which could fire a conventional round with a fully combustible casing, or the MGM-51 Shillelagh anti-tank missile. Completing the M60 family were the M728 armoured engineer vehicle, and the still-in-service M60 Armoured VehicleLaunched Bridge. Packed with 155 vintage colour photos, sixty-nine black-and-white images, by numerous fine line drawings, and a detailed data table, this 80-page volume traces the history of America’s iconic Cold War tank. t’s Christmas time again and these days that means another new Star Wars film is on release. It’s also time to take a look at a model of one of the most famous ships from the films. For me, the combination of December and Star Wars feels perfectly normal because as a young lad, the original films would usually appear on TV around this time of year and they almost became a part of Christmas tradition. Last year, Russian model manufacturer Zvezda created an all-new 1:2700 kit of the Imperial Star Destroyer and I was deeply frustrated that it was only licensed for the Russian market and thus not (officially) available outside of that country. Much to the relief of many Star Wars fans however, Revell, who

do have the license for the UK and other parts of the globe, released the kit in their own packaging. It’s an incredible production that builds up to a length of 60cm (two feet) and is covered with fantastic detail and you can hopefully see from the photos here. The model is a wonderful thing and I aim to build it up and paint it with a new, Star Wars-specific range of enamel paints from the UK. But more on those next month... Watch this space! ●

Oilbrushers by AMMO by Mig Jimenez www.migjimenez.com I have to admit that when I first saw the ‘Oilbrushers’ from AMMO by Mig Jimenez, I was a little sceptical; an eyeliner for modellers? Well, having now tried them, I have changed my opinion completely. They consist of pre-thinned oil paints in a slim bottle and a cap with a built-in applicator brush which allows the modeller to conveniently access a ready to use oil paint colour wash without the need to make a mess when mixing them up. I will be trying them out further on forthcoming model builds!
