ON THE WAY FROM TAMIYA 1:35 German Assault Tank IV Brummbär Late Production The 1:35 scale Military Miniature series welcomes the Brummbär, a 15cm howitzer-armed assault tank (Sturmpanzer) built on the reliable and versatile Pz.Kpfw.IV chassis. It was ordered by Hitler himself and produced in various incarnations from April 1943 to March 1945. The most numerous was the late production variant Photo: TLAC via Lee Archer, Panzerwrecks depicted by this model. It used the Pz.Kpfw.IV Ausf. J chassis and had a simplified fighting compartment with an extrusion on the top-left to house a machine gun. In Tamiya’s new 1:35 kit, elevation and traverse movement are provided by the massive main gun, the schürzen side armour is recreated in multiple parts to allow a range of different configurations, parts are included to depict rubber-rimmed and all-steel road wheels, one-piece flexible tracks, one half-figure, one full body figure and two marking options for 219th Assault Tank Battalion vehicles. A zimmerit coating sheet detail-up parts set dedicated to this model (Item 12673) is to be released simultaneously. www.hobbyco.net

ON THE WAY BACK FROM TAMIYA 1:12 Tyrrell P34 Six Wheeler (w/photo-etched parts) We are delighted to see the re-issue of this classic kit, timed to commemorate forty years since the first depiction of the P34 in model form by Tamiya. The P34’s designer, Derek Gardner, used four simultaneously-steered small diameter tyres to reduce drag by making the frontal area smaller. The tyres were covered by the nose, further reducing drag. The distinctive six-wheeled suspension design is accurately reproduced and movable and the detailed engine features depictions of tubing and cables for the ignition system. Parts are also included for the radiator and oil cooler pipes. Realistic synthetic rubber tyres. Includes a comprehensive set of photo-etched parts such as brake discs, radiator grille, pedals, and seat belts for the ultimate finish. High-quality Cartograf markings for machines driven by Jody Scheckter and Patrick Depailler also included. Also to return is the 1:20 Tyrrell P34 (1976 Japan GP) and it too will come with photo-etched parts to depict details such as brake discs, triangular net guard on the air funnel, rear wing stays, large rear wing panel, and seatbelt buckles. Cartograf decals for No.3 and No.4 cars will be included. www.hobbyco.net Photo: Team owner and Manager Ken Tyrrell, and the Tyrrell P34 test car at the 1976 Silverstone International Trophy. ON THE WAY FROM TAMIYA 1:35 German 3.5 ton AHN Truck w/3.7cm Flak 37 AA Gun The Military Collection series gets a new addition with this 1:35 model, which uses the ICM truck model with Tamiya Flak 37 anti-aircraft gun, figures and accessories, putting them in a Tamiya box with newly-created Tamiya instructions. The AHN truck was a French-designed vehicle that was produced after the French surrender to Nazi Germany in 1940. Around 4,000 were manufactured between 1941 and 1944 and served a valuable role on various fronts, with excellent mobility proving a benefit for its troops. The AHN 3.5 ton truck comes with a replica of the 75hp engine. A realistic depiction of the underside features suspension, drive shafts and more. Includes four seated figures, two for the cabin and two in the rear bed. Parts are included to recreate two different types (early and mid) of jerrycan plus tool boxes and fuel drums. The model will come with two marking options that recreate Wehrmacht vehicles on the Italian and Eastern fronts. www.hobbyco.net Photo: Bundesarchiv

Tamiya has announced the first all-new German tank crew figure set since Item 35201, back in 1996! This new-tooled set will include four, full-body figures; two examining a map, one scanning the field through binoculars and an officer surveying the battleground. The pack will also include four half-figures; an officer for use in a cupola, a commander signalling his team to move out, a driver peering out of his hatch and a crewman in his hatch. Realistic decals are included, as is a detailed explanation of the different types of Wehrmacht decoration and how they were worn. More news soon. www.hobbyco.net

ON THE WAY FROM ZVEZDA 1:144 Ilyushin Il-76 MD Heavy Transport Plane The first flight of this heavy strategic airlifter with the NATO code ‘Candid’ took place in 1971. Today it is still in production with a total of 960 planes manufactured. The IL-76 is still the main Russian cargo plane and in service in many other countries. Zvezda’s new kit features rear cargo door in open or closed positions, wing flaps in two positions (flight/ landing), cabin and cargo bay interior detail and decals for one of three Russian aircraft. www.hobbyco.net

KIT PREVIEW

TAMIYA 1:6 HONDA CFR1000L AFRICA TWIN KIT NO.16042

AFRICA TWIN RIDES RIGHT IN! Philippe Devos was one of the first lucky modellers to open the box of Tamiya’s new 1:6 Honda CFR1000L Africa Twin

T

hree years after the surprise of a new Harley Davidson in 1:6, Tamiya have done it again with another all new 1:6 Big Scale bike, the Honda CFR1000L ‘Africa Twin’! No one could have suspected that the ‘Big T’ would turn to rally-raid for the new subject. The choice of the model is perfect: at the same time resolutely modern and a worthy heiress of its glorious elders, the 2015 Africa Twin has revived the myth of the true Dakar, the one who loved the smell of hot sand and who created a concrete link between two continents of Europe and Africa. When opening the box (of more than generous dimensions) one is impressed by the quantity of plastic sprues; white for the fairings, grey for the engine parts, black for the frame, translucent or tinted for the optics, chrome for internal optics and exhaust, golden for the rims. Nineteen clusters totalling nearly 370 pieces no less. The dimensions of some parts prompt us to quickly make room on the shelf: tank, backsplash, exhaust, rims, frame, saddle and chain are all measured in centimetres, not millimetres! The mould part-lines lines are almost non-existent or at least invisible to the naked eye. Impressive! A quick review of the instructions shows that the high number of parts allows each moulding to be painted with only one colour, with a few exceptions. The most surprising parts are without doubt the separate discs of the rims. They are incredibly delicate, but thanks to the wonders of ABS plastic, not as fragile as they look. Which is just as well, as they are the ones that will require the most manipulation. The moulding line here quite visible and it will be necessary to scrape them away with a new blade; In addition, the instructions recommend black for the central hub and silver for each spoke. These will surely be painted by brush, as masking (or rather, its removal) could be too risky.

1: Even though only few in number, the fairings – here the right side parts – are no less imposing. Perfectly moulded, they are free from joint lines and will be easy to paint. Only the half-tanks will be glued together with a sanding to follow; the front fairings are fixed to each side of the headlight unit without touching and the front fender is moulded in one piece 2: The exhaust promises to be splendid: the line is endless with a perfect moulding, the silencer is a big thing of almost 10cm by 5cm. Assembly takes up more than a page of the instructions with fifteen parts... 3: Another example of the gigantism of the thing: the support of the mudguard. Besides its immoderate size, its moulding has an incredible depth, with no defects or obvious simplification. Particularly admirable are the sprue attachment points which are very small, very fine, easy and quick to sand and yet sufficient to firmly hold this large piece 4: The tyres are also large: 12cm diameter for the front and 11cm for the rear. The mouldings are very crisp and represent on-road tyres. Off-road tyres might have been better for those who wish to weather-up their model. In any case, the most modellers will build their Honda in showroom condition. 5: The rims are made of golden-coloured plastic, which looks yellow in the photos here 6: Here is a ‘quarter’ rim disc; there are eight like this, well protected by the sprue and cardboard in the kit box. Diameter of the spokes is an estimated 0.7mm! 7: The exhibition stand is in translucent plastic. It will be quite discreet under the motorcycle and, besides, it will confer the status of the model as a work of art! 8: No, it’s not a mistake, Tamiya did not include a part from a Gundam or a Transformer! It is actually the headlight frame that will lend a determined and concentrated look to the motorcycle’s ‘face’. But it is true to say that here we see Japanese culture of which Honda is the best world representative 9: Mastery of moulding #1: The clutch housing is perfect! More experienced modellers will be able to drill the nuts and replace them with metal ones

The choice of injectionmoulded plastic for the wheel spokes is certainly understandable, as it offers increased accessibility for less experienced modellers who might not be accustomed to using metal parts for the spokes. In the box – and recommended by the instructions – there is a new and unexpected translucent plastic support, similar to those for aircraft models in flight, to support the finished model. It’s a good idea, as the bike will rest heavily on its two wheels and will easily exceed half a kilogram when complete. Metal parts All the more so because the fork is entirely made from metal, as well as the shock absorber springs and the fastening shafts. The hex head screws for the wheels are similar to the real ones. The rest of the hardware is also abundant: more than a hundred screws and nuts of all sizes and types. To assemble all this, we have two flat keys, one Allen wrench and two screwdrivers: the very small orange one, so well known to motorcycle modellers and the big black screwdriver which became the official screwdriver for my big hands since the Harley assembly! The decal sheet is like the rest of the kit, complete and precise. The painting of the fairings will not take too long. After a straightforward spraying with white and blue mother-of-pearl shades for the ‘Pearl Glare White’ (box art) or red and black for the ‘Victory Red’ version – aided by the use of cutting masks for the tank – the main lines of the motorcycle take the form of large flat blue/red or black/white areas according to the version chosen. The instructions are accompanied by a brochure of six pages with the history of the machine, since its beginnings in rally-raid, photos of the first Africa Twin and many more details of the current machine from all angles and even an exploded engine illustrating the new DCT technology, revolutionary robotic transmission. If the choice of the subject left you a little puzzled, you

10: Mastery of moulding #2: the radiators are extraordinary! Fans, grilles, protection, casing... Everything is perforated and detailed to perfection! We're approaching absolute realism here 11-12: Mastery of moulding #3: the handlebar grips have detail in all areas; The footpegs with all their tiny pins; the tank cap, all completely realistic 13-14: Mastery of moulding #4: the brake discs are already drilled... And it's so much better than doing it by hand! The chain ring is separate (the sprocket also) in anticipation of the Detail-Up set with individual links (see New Releases Accessories this issue). The plastic chain of the kit fits on it because it is in two halves, with pins in relief which make it possible to recreate the recessed links 15: The chrome sprue is superb. It mainly carries the headlight reflector and exhaust shrouds. No rubbish, no inlaid dust, no plasticky appearance, the chrome is gleaming and the attachment points are located on the mating surfaces, so the de-sprueing won't damage the plated surface 16: The transparent sprue is of excellent quality: clear as gin, with attachment points small and well placed 17: An impressive hardware store! Screws, nuts, rods, springs; nearly 140 metal parts in all. Four tools are provided, including the beautiful black screwdriver, so nice to hold in the hand. A double-sided vinyl sheath (more than two metres), double-sided adhesive, self-adhesive mirror, adhesive foam and tinted optics complete Tamiya's rich inventory 18: In the printed package we are spoiled: exhaustive instructions, images and history of the machine, masks to cut out (for the tank) and decal sheets of high quality

will soon be convinced by the sheer quality of the model, the pleasure of its assembly and the gigantic size it will reach once complete. No stage seems to present any difficulty, except perhaps the rims, but these require patience and dexterity more than technique or

experience. Finally, the only problem will be to choose whether to make the red or white version? I am still hesitating... ‘Twin’ does signify ‘two’ of something, so maybe I’ll buy another kit and build both schemes! Full build article coming to TMMI soon. ●

Sascha Müller Müller builds the all-new Beemax 1:24 BMW M3 (E30) DTM

A

project which started three years ago came really true. After a long wait, the scale model company Beemax launched a brand new model of the famous BMW M3 (E30) in the specification of the German Touring Car series DTM. During a talk

12

between two friends of mine and the scale model brand Aoshima, we convinced the company of the need for a good BMW M3 model. So overall, the idea of Michael Gräber and Sebastian Motsch became realism. Thanks guys for pushing this project, which was

launched some weeks ago by Beemax. After several emails with Beemax I was able to get two test-shots of the M3, which I received a few weeks before official launch. One of them is the kit shown in this feature, the other one was built at the same time by my

friend Holger. He converted the M3 into the DTM car in the green-gold ‘Diebels Alt’ livery. Together, those two make a nice couple, as you can see in attached picture. The grey colour of the plastic is typical for test shots and the full-production kit will be in white plastic. The kit

DECALLING

After fitting the sills, I did some sanding work with P1000 grit. I degreased the body and applied two coats of Tamiya white primer. Following a good drying session, the primer was sanded with a P3000 disc. Paintwork was done by my friend Holger who used a 2K topcoat of an original BMW Alpine White II colour (3). If you want to use model colours, Tamiya TS-26 or Zero Paint white

Applying the large BMW M-stripe decals might look a little intimidating. I was not sure if they would work as I wanted, due to the rounded geometry on the fenders and some corners (4). I also bought the BMW M colour set by Zero Paints in case the decals failed. The decal sheet is really high quality and is printed very well (5). So, they were my first selection to try. I cut out the large part of the M-stripes

The Beemax decal sheet is impeccable and applied to the model with ease, as we can see in the image above right. So long as a careful and methodical approach is taken, no problems should be experienced. Note the separately printed gold sections of the Warsteiner logo

V and placed it in water until

the backing paper had completely separated. Due to the size, this took a bit longer than usual. For adhesion reasons, I painted on some Mr.Hobby decal setter then applied the decal onto the body. I used a Q-Tip to press the decal onto the bodyshell and to squeeze out all the liquid underneath. Absolutely amazing how well this worked! Without any softener, the decals laid down on the body including its curves. A hairdryer was used in just some areas, but in general, the decal quality is awesome. Another

highlight was the high gloss gold decal to be used underneath the ‘Warsteiner’ brand logos. The BMW logo has a certain texture and looks really nice too (6). So, after a short period of time, all decals had been applied to the body and the car was ready for clear-coat application.

2K CLEAR-COAT

For a few months I have been using 2K-clear from Standox. I prepare the activation on a scale, so I can prepare a really small amount of clear-coat in exactly the right ratio (which is listed in the official

Tamiya’s specially designed turntable was used to support the bodyshell

14

technical data sheet). I applied a thin layer of clear with my airbrush, which gives a good ‘wetting’ on the surface. After a short flash off of five minutes, I finished the application with a full coat of clear. Depending on the type used, the drying time differ; my material was ready to handle after one hour at room temperature (7).

CHASSIS AND INTERIOR

The car I build is the Cecotto No.3 machine of the Schnitzer racing team. In this period of racing, all DTM BMWs featured a different colour theme

in their front grilles and interiors. The Schnitzer No.3 car was full red, so for my model I used TS-8 Tamiya Italian Red out of an aerosol can (8/9). I built the chassis and interior ‘out of the box’, just with a little attention paid to the seat. I made a template out of tape (10/11) to get the right shape for the back of the seat. The template was then transferred to a piece of Kevlar-effect decal which, once cut out, was placed on the back of the seat (12/13). I also applied some texture paint to

Small details, such as the gear lever, were touched in by hand

the black parts of the seat. ‘Micro-balloons’ filler powder was used to simulate a cotton-like surface. Of course there were some seatbelts added, which took some careful work effort to fit (14/15). The chassis plate of the model was finished in Tamiya TS-26 Pure White. The suspension and exhaust are nicely made by Beemax, and all components were painted with Revell Aqua colours, plus a slight colour-wash for more realism (16). Afterwards, the chassis plate and interior were glued together (17).

TRANSPARENT PARTS

In this kit, the windows are glued in place from the outside and the frames have to be painted. They are

clearly marked in the plastic which makes the painting quite easy. I use Revell Aqua paint applied by brush for this process (18). On the body, I marked the window frames with a black ‘Edding’ permanent marker (19). I use superglue to fit the windows which offers strong adhesion and is good for the robustness of my models, who travel with me a lot. Normally superglue carries the risk of fogging which creates a white haze around the glued surfaces. To avoid this milkiness, I heated the parts slightly with a hairdryer. This lowers the humidity which causes the whitening due to the reaction with the cyanoacrylate.

BONNET CATCHES

As I explained earlier, I removed the plastic bonnet catches which Beemax mould into the body. I use photo-etched parts for a better appearance here (20). I drilled 0.5mm holes into bonnet and boot lid in (21) which are necessary to hold the pins in place. I cut the catches off the frame and bent them into the correct shape

(22). Some superglue was placed into the hole and a little around the outer surface, and the catch was then placed with tweezers. Looks good, doesn’t it? (23) Small special parts I could not resist to add some extra parts to the kit, to make it look even nicer. Headlight inserts were replaced by 6mm items from Scale Production and a roof antenna was added, for which I used an acupuncture needle. The exhaust ends were made of metal parts bought in the electrical section of a DIY superstore (24). Of course you can use the parts included in the kit, but this is my personal touch to the car which creates a realistic effect with low effort.

A masking tape template was made for the seat back

The template was transferred to the reverse of the kevlar decal sheet

SMALL ISSUE

The grille and the left rear mirror should get the same colour as the red M-stripe. If you use the decals of the kit, you have to mix up a matching colour, so I sprayed several samples of mixtures of a solid red and a fluorescent red. If you paint the stripes instead of decalling, you simply apply the same colour on all areas to be red.

Once trimmed out, the decal was applied, using setting solution

The seat harnesses in a model aircraft cockpit can be a rear eye-catcher and if they look unrealistic they can ruin the overall effect. So as not to treat them as an afterthought, Fine Molds from Japan now offer exquisitely detailed sets for the MiG-29 Fulcrum and Su-27 Flanker, moulded from ABS plastic to offer maximum flexibility to conform to the shape of the seat. They need careful handling but will offer a fantastic result once painted and lightly weathered

iconic car, and here it is. The other existing M3 scale model which was available for years is not up to date and is very wrong in lots of areas (eg; too low roof line). Beemax did a very good job here and

we all can appreciate the effort they put in to make this kit. All parts fit very well and the decals are absolutely stunning (perhaps the best I ever used). The run on this kit was already proved by a quick sell-out of

TAMIYA 1:35 INFANTRY TANK MATILDA MK.III/IV RED ARMY KIT NO.35355

COMRADE MATILDA

Brett Green takes a look at Tamiya’s new 1:35 Matilda Mk.III/IV ‘Red Army’

W

e have just have received an early production sample of Tamiya’s forthcoming Red Army Matilda. This model is based on the new-tool kit from 2009 (35300) and shares absolutely nothing in common with Tamiya’s original Matilda, kit number 35024, that was released in 1973. Tamiya’s new Red Army Matilda comprises 580 parts in dark green plastic (320 of them being the tracks and skids), ten polycaps and markings for one of two vehicles. So what is different in this version? Quite a lot, as it turns out. There are new side skirts with characteristically prominent hinges for the mud chute hatches, track skids replace the return rollers of the previous kit and new solid front locker hatches are also included. Tracks are the chunky Spud version, quite different to the style provided in the earlier release. They are presented as individual links made up from two parts per link and simply click together without the need for glue. The guide teeth are hollow on the real tank but for the kit, the plastic guide teeth are moulded with a dent at the front and rear. This offers a pretty good representation considering the guide teeth are almost completely hidden behind the complex running gear and large armoured side covers. Surface texture

is everything we have come to expect from a new Tamiya release. Cast metal is beautifully depicted on the turret, the nose and the armoured engine deck covers and the recessed screwheads on the lower hull side covers even includes slot detail. Raised strips, rivets and bolts are present wherever appropriate and the asbestos insulation wrapped around the exhaust pipes looks fantastic too. The sprues contain two styles of 2Pdr gun barrels plus a 3” howitzer barrel, which suggests that a Close Support version is on the way. Each barrel is supplied in one piece and is hollow at the muzzle end. Several rows of flashed over holes may be found on the inside of the hull surrounding the turret ring. This hints that the Australian version, featuring the armoured ring protecting the base of the turret, might be seen some time in the future. The low-profile commander’s cupola is included on the sprues too, another feature typically seen on Australian Matildas. The mantlet is secured with polycaps allowing the gun to elevate and the driver’s hatch may be left to slide on its rails. A full complement of new on-vehicle tools plus crew stowage is supplied. Two Soviet crew figures are included and their poses are relaxed with excellent sculpting.

Moulding quality is marvellous. There are just a few very faint circles to clean up on the inside of the loader’s hatch and although there is an alarming number of ejector-pin marks on the lower hull, these will all be completely hidden behind suspension components and the big mud chutes. Sponsons are not boxed in but you won’t see the light of day once the armoured hull sides are secured. The searchlight lens is a solid plastic piece, helpfully, however, it is a separate part so it may be replaced with a clear lens if desired. Kit engineering is sensible and this Matilda should be as straightforward to build as the 2009 kit. I particularly like the way Tamiya has broken down the nose of the vehicle to avoid a horizontal join across the front of the hull. Decals are included for two specific Soviet Matildas in 1942, while decals 3 to 12 are various generic slogans and markings. This one won’t be staying in the box for long! Highly recommended ●

KIT PREVIEW

RYE FIELD MODEL 1:35 M1 ASSAULT BREACHER VEHICLE KIT NO.RM-5011

INTO THE SHREDDER

Rye Field Model have created a full kit of the most impressive-looking Abrams variant yet, the M1 ABV

T

his amazing beast of the US military’s inventory is a mine-clearance conversion of the M1 Abrams MBT. It incorporates the M58 ‘MICLIC’ system, which uses rocket-propelled line-charges to detonate landmines and create a path through the minefield. It’s a fearsome machine and was first used in combat in Afghanistan on the morning of December 3rd, 2009, when Marines pushed into the Taliban stronghold of Now Zad during ‘Operation Cobra’s Anger’ in Helmand province, on their way to another Taliban stronghold. They were also used in February 2010 in the desert outside

Sistani and Marjah. By the summer of 2013, ABVs had arrived in South Korea. Rye Field Model’s new 1:35 kit uses parts from their excellent Abrams model, plus a ton of new parts for the huge mine-plough and heavily revised turret. So many new parts are involved in the turret and MICLIC system that it isn’t until page fifteen (Stage 8) that assembly starts on the hull and suspension, the first ‘chapter’ being taken up by the highly detailed mine-clearance systems. As you might imagine, the mine-plough is also a complex and highly involved sub-assembly that takes up four full pages of the instruction

booklet. It’s all beautifully detailed with quite lot of workable parts and it is well worth familiarising oneself by reading through the instructions before cutting any parts off the sprues. The model can be painted overall desert sand colour, or the vehicle can be painted in NATO green with the mine-plough in the sand colour. This is a fantastic production that will keep the builder busy for weeks (or even months if you’re a methodical builder) and it just needs a few crew figures to show off its vast size. There are many metal parts in this kit; it’s certainly unlike a regular model in that regard. A selection of drills, files and abrasives will be required

The Ferrari V6 turbo engine is a work of art and builds up from masses of cast metal components. Each part needs methodical clean-up

V The 126 C2 Turbo succeeded in combining many aerodynamic and telemetry concepts, marrying them with the 1500cc V6 turbo, one of the most powerful engines of the lot, designed

by the engineer Forghieri to become an extension of the chassis.

MFH MODEL

Unlike my previous model work, where I always

add detail-up parts and accessories from different companies, I built this kit ‘out of the box’ because all that is needed to make a highly realistic model is already provided by the

manufacturer. The quality of the parts and the richness of detail in an MFH kit is amazing, as anyone who’s seen one up close will know. Because of the size and complexity of the

model, the parts-breakdown often mimics that of the real car which definitely helps to make it even more faithful the original design. Open opening the box, it was immediately clear that I found myself faced with a completely different approach to traditional kits and I decided to pay a lot more attention to the preparation procedures. The first step was to carry out a thorough examination of all the kit parts and then prepare them following the assembly diagram. After that, the parts were processed and unlike injection-moulded plastic mouldings, the location holes are only marked on the surface and must be drilled out to the right diameter. After this, I sanded the parts where necessary to remove burrs created during drilling, plus any flaws from the casting process. I then performed multiple test-assemblies of almost all the model’s components to check that everything fitted together and to identify any areas which might need refinement and adjustment. With regards to the painting of the model, many areas of the real car were not painted, with plenty of bare metal on show. The MFH kit includes lots of cast metal parts and so with these, instead of applying paint, I simply used colour-washes, drybrushing and weathering, depending on the function of the parts. What you notice most is that the

chassis is made almost entirely from metal and it was good enough to only need polishing with an abrasive paste (Tamiya Compound Fine). The engine and transmission were treated with Fine Surface Primer White, followed by a base-coat of TS-17 Gloss Aluminium. The final colour was achieved with a mix of X-31 Titanium Gold and XF-16 Flat Aluminium in a ratio of three to one. Once the paint had fully dried, I applied targeted colour-washes made from highly diluted X-19 Smoke to highlight the details. I finally fixed it all with a transparent matt varnish. Particular attention was paid to the exhaust-turbine parts, the latter being painted with Tamiya TS-42 Light Gun Metal and subsequently transparent matt varnish. The exhaust tubing was treated with a base-colour of TS-30 Silver Leaf, the heat staining created with Tamiya Weathering Master D, then a very light colour-wash of X-19 with and finally a semi-transparent varnish. All radiators and the intercooler were primed with Superfine White and then sprayed with TS-17 Gloss Aluminium, followed by several more highly diluted X-19 Smoke colour-washes to try emphasise the various details. On the suspension system I used TS-29 Semi-Gloss Black for the front arms and on the rears, TS-17 on the upper areas and TS-29 on the lower parts. The

KIT PREVIEW

TAKOM 1:35 FV432 MK.2/1 W/INTERIOR KIT NO.2066

BRITAIN’S BATTLEFIELD BUS Takom have released an all-new, fully detailed 1:35 FV432 ‘battlefield taxi’ in injection-moulded plastic. What’s not to love?

T

he British FV432 dates all the way back to 1963. 3,000+ examples were manufactured and nearly half are still in service. The well-known Abbott 105mm SPG was based on the ‘432 hull and running gear, as well as other, more specialised vehicles. Until now, there has never been a 1:35 injection-moulded plastic model of this significant Cold War ‘battlefield taxi’, so Takom’s release has been met with great enthusiasm, particularly within the British armour modelling community. Takom have re-created the most common Mk/2/1 variant and it comes with a fully kitted-out crew compartment from the rear door to the driver’s station. No engine is provided, but we can imagine that this option might materialise from the aftermarket sector. The lower hull sports an excellent non-slip texture moulded into its internal floor, so we’re off to a good start. Into the hull are fitted detailed lower wall liners that support the crew seats and atop the track sponsons are supplied parts for the batteries, radio and other internal equipment. The driver’s station consists of a raised platform on which the height-adjustable driver’s seat mounts, plus driving controls and more.

The upper hull walls are detailed on both faces (inner and outer) and on the inside surface, a few ejector-pin marks will need removal, but this is no big deal. Careful alignment here will be essential, so that the upper deck fits correctly. The running is provided in the form of individuallymoulded swing arms and associated hardware, onto which fit the paired roadwheels. The tracks come in the form of links and lengths; multiple links moulded together for the upper and lower runs and lift-up sections, plus individual links to wrap around the drive sprockets and idlers. Takom have appreciated that this can be a tricky stage of assembly and have very helpfully included a moulded plastic assembly jig that is used both for aligning the swing arms and building up the tracks into easier to fit segments. It’s still quite a trick to prevent the tracks from being prematurely cemented to the idlers and sprockets, but it’s better than building them ‘freeform’. The upper hull ‘deck’, like the hull sides, is detailed on both its faces and again, we have some ejector-pin marks to deal with. On our sample (they can vary) they are quite shallow with

a wide circumference and should be easy to scrape away, filling any recessed areas with putty or Mr Surfacer. Plenty of detail parts are then added to the ‘ceiling’, as are to the outer roof too. This sub-assembly will end up with a lot of parts cemented to it – hinged and workable mortar hatches, engine access panels, commander’s cupola and more – and you’ll want it to simply drop-fit to the hull, hence the need to get those hull walls in perfect alignment as mentioned earlier. Four markings options are provided as standard; Berlin 1980 (urban camouflage), Royal Scotts 7th Armoured Brigade (desert scheme), standard British Army black/green camouflage and green/sand camouflage for OPFOR. In summary, it is fantastic to have an injection-moulded kit of the FV432 to enjoy. It full interior makes it all the more fun - bring on the Abbott and other variants! ● AVAILABILITY; Takom models are widely available from good model shops and online. www.pocketbond.co.uk

BIG SHOT! Korea is also known as the ‘Calm Morning Country’, but the crew of this M40 are about to break the silence... Tamiya’s new kit and its crew inspired Erik Dreister to create this bucolic diorama

T

he M40 Tamiya is an entirely new kit that faithfully reproduces this huge American self-propelled gun in 1:35. It was used for the first time in Germany in March 1945 and therefore too late to participate with any significance in the Second World War, so it was during the Korean War in the early 1950s that it was used the most. Moreover, the two decal schemes provided in the kit are for vehicles gear engaged in this conflict. Tamiya offers us, as usual, a beautiful kit that’s easy to assemble without sacrificing the level of detail. The box also contains eight very well animated crew figures, which complement the model perfectly. The object of this article is not to describe the step-by-step assembly, which any moderately experienced modeller will be able to carry out without problems by following the very clear instructions. I will concentrate on the painting and weathering of the model plus the creation of the diorama, exploiting the potential offered by the eight figures and the accessories provided. The only addition is Tamiya’s set 12670, which combines an impressive aluminium gun barrel plus ten brass shells, all of excellent quality.

The finished barrel is easily installed in the mount. It can be fitted at the modeller’s convenience, which will facilitates the painting of the surround areas. The breech block head can be presented closed or here, open for the diorama

The sighting equipment is beautifully reproduced. The author drilled the ends of the glasses with a mini-cutter to increase realism

View of the inside of the fighting compartment with the barrel base and peripheral details. The interior is full of detail and the author presented the folding seats in a raised position

The anchor beam may remain movable but the author decided to fix it in the lowered position. The nylon cord installed on the pulleys must be tight. For this, it was coated with cyano glue once it had been positioned, thus stiffened it will not move any more

The folding platform is made up of several parts. The author decided to present it with its retractable section extended to its maximum deployment

The retractable grid of the platform is impeccably reproduced by Tamiya

The surface of the main platform is superb! The small metal chains are positioned temporarily for the photo. They will not be permanently installed until after painting

The gun-brace supporting the barrel in transit may remain mobile if desired. The two cupolas of the driving position will be completed with their clear plastic parts once painting is finished

The tools are moulded without their straps which the author has depicted with thin electrical tape. The photo-etched engine ventilation grilles are supplied in the box

The author thinned out the headlight brush-guards and the horn shield, as they seemed too thick

The M40 has the same HVSS suspension as the recently released ‘Easy Eight’ Sherman by Tamiya. The details of the vinyl tracks are convincing. Their replacement by metal tracks is not really necessary

PAINTING Tamiya XF-62 Olive Drab was sprayed over the entire model. Various armoured panels were shaded by adding more and more XF-4 Yellow Green to the base colour

After applying a layer of gloss varnish, the decals were positioned. A second coat of gloss varnish was then applied to protect them. The small details were touched-in with a brush and various spots of surface wear created at the same stage

34

The ‘dusting’ was carried out with various tones of earth colour, well diluted and applied via airbrush

The surface wear was created with Vallejo Dark Rust deposited with an ultra thin Pro Tamiya brush. Wear was greater on the floor of the combat station With the tip of a modelling knife, the author created some scratches by scoring the surface of the decals

The tools were painted according to the instructions: XF-64 Red Brown for wooden handles and XF-56 Gunmetal for the metal parts

Various scratches were also reproduced on the internal walls and the stowage chests

A XF-72 JGSDF Brown was applied to the undercarriage and the rubber parts were touched in by a brush using XF-85 Rubber Black

The whole model received a colour-wash made from a mixture of Tamiya Panel Line Accent Color Black and Brown. A sponge brush and various Tamiya cotton swabs soaked in enamel thinner were used to create the streaks on the vertical panels of the armour

The same method was also used in the combat compartment

To represent the accumulated sludge on the lower parts of the hull, the author used Tamiya ‘Soil Effect’ texture paint

Once the paint Soil Effect dries, the mud aspect is quite convincing

The anchor spade also received a generous layer of Soil Effect paint

The fighting compartment was also covered with a few earth-coloured sails but also with Soil Effect paint

The breech of the barrel was also patinated with Tamiya pigments

To complete the application of ‘muck’, the author flicked-on XF-57 and XF-59 with an old toothbrush

To simulate the scratches on the rear platform, the author used a synthetic sponge soaked in Vallejo Dark Rust before patting the surfaces to be treated

An HB pencil can replicate metal wear and various metallic effects

Soil Effect paint was applied randomly over the various elements of the rear platform The tracks were painted XF-72 JGSDF Brown, the The areas in contact with the roadwheels were dry dominant colour of the M40 dust and suspension brushed with XF-1 Flat Black weathering. Then, with a flat brush, the protruding parts were highlighted with XF-56 Gunmetal, then X-11 Chrome

The accumulation of mud and dust is completed with Tamiya acrylic paint juices diluted with water (XF-72 and XF-52 in particular).

The tracks were installed and then ‘Soil Effect paint applied sparingly

The metal parts of the tools were patined at this stage with dry pastels of the Tamiya set 87085

DISPLAY BASE

The display base was made with a thick layer of insulating foam around which planks, cut out of an advertising sign, were glued. Areas of terrain were created with extra pieces of expanded polystyrene

The decorative external frame was painted black and a glue/tile adhesive mixture spread out to form the groundwork

The base was painted in the same tonalities as the M40 and relief letters (by Cultura) were glued to the frame

The floor was covered with Tamiya ‘Soil Effect’ paint, ideal for replicating natural earth

Soil Effect Khaki was also used from the bottle to make undergrowth

Soil Effect paints Khaki and Grass were mixed to create the grassy areas on the surface of the groundwork. The contents of a tea bag were sprinkled here and there to give even more texture to the floor

In addition to the moulded plastic shells of the M40 kit, Tamiya offers brass shells in the metal gun set

Two conifers from the Faller range of products (for model The shells are seen here painted and their decals railways) decorate the background and give a little applied. One member of the eight servants is responsible height to the display for preparing the shells.

RIOR

René van der Hart brings us a concise build-up review of Eduard’s F6F-3 Hellcat ProfiPACK Edition

T

he Hellcat had its baptism of fire in late 1943 and in the two years until the end of the war it was credited with more than 5,000 air-to-air kills, no wonder there were quite a few Hellcat aces. One of them was Alexander Vraciu who scored nineteen kills. His plane is one of five decal options in Eduard’s kit. The ProfiPACK edition includes Eduard’s own plastic kit, two photo-etch frets of which one is pre-coloured for the cockpit instruments, resin wheels and a nice sheet of decals and canopy masks. As usual, the build starts with the cockpit. After painting the plastic parts interior green and black, the self-adhesive pre-coloured

instrument panels are put in place. This results in a very attractive and busy looking cockpit without having to paint all the microscopic dials and switches. Also included are pre-coloured seat belts and they look very realistic. The engine is built up of five plastic parts which, after painting aluminium and a given a dark colour-wash, looks pretty good. With the addition of the photo-etch ignition wires it looks even better. Unfortunately most of the engine will be hidden once installed in the cowling. The kit is quite basic but the panel lines are sharp and deep enough to hold a wash. There are no flaps included but

the control surfaces are all separate. The only drawback being the fact that they can only be installed without an angle straight from the kit; some cutting and modifying has to be done if you want to change that. The landing gear, and especially the resin wheels, are very nice. After painting white and adding a wash, all the details pop out. A choice of bombs and centreline drop tank are also included but I opted to keep the plane ‘clean’. The fit of the parts is nothing less of excellent and hardly any filler was needed. I hardly ever use canopy masks because they seldom fit. The ones include from Eduard fitted like a glove. It was quite a relief! A coat of Alclad black

primer with micro-filler was airbrushed over the completed airframe. The paint used was Gunze Aqueous of which the colour numbers are given in the instructions: H54 for the top surfaces, H56 for the sides and H316 for the underside. To give the colours a less solid look I airbrushed the colours in thin layers, building up their intensity randomly on the surface. With a few drops of white, the paint was made a few shades lighter to make even more variations in the paint, giving it a bit of a used look. When the paint was dry a coat of Alclad Aqua gloss was sprayed on to make a smooth surface on which to apply the decals. The markings look very sharp and are printed in register, but the big problem is that

they didn’t react to the decal setting solutions I used; Daco strong and Mr Mark Softener. This resulted in the decals not ‘sinking’ into the fine panel lines. I ended up cutting the decals with a sharp blade and one single (!) brush stroke of Tamiya plastic cement over the decal. This worked but is quite risky to do. Finally a dark colour-wash on the top side and a grey wash on the underside was brushed on, followed by an Alclad semi matt coat. Overall, this kit builds into a very nice representation of this Navy WW2 workhorse and is easy enough to build for beginners in the hobby. Highly recommended. ●

Eduard’s airframe surface detail is some of the most realistic ever seen on a model kit

This set is for Tamiya’s fantastic 1:6 Honda ‘Africa Twin’ motorcycle kit (previewed pages 8-11 this issue), replacing the excellent onepiece chain part with individual links. The links are moulded in strong ABS plastic which cements and paints like regular polystyrene but is significantly stronger. Assembly jigs are supplied on the moulded sprues and steel tubing rollers will be found in the pack for increased realism. The links will need trimming, cleaning up and painting, but will look completely convincing in place. Full instructions are included. Detail-Up Series Assembly Chain for 1:6 Motorcycle (12674)

Tamiya’s plastic sprue cutters are consistently high quality and will last for years if treated with care. The latest design is a chunky cutter that’s designed to work on plastic and soft metals (aluminium, brass, copper) and will be ideal for separating RC car parts from their often hefty moulding trees. Spring-loaded and very high quality production.

For the enhanced detailing of 1:24 and 1:12 car models and 1:12 and 1:6 motorcycle models, Tamiya have released four gauges of black vinyl cabling, all flexible but rigid enough to hold their position well, when fitted in place. High quality materials are used and the cable can also find uses in armour and aircraft models of larger scales.

New from PM are a set of ‘Modern Bags’ (great for modern era vehicles and dioramas) ‘US Army Jack and Stands’ and ‘Garage Equipment’, all useful items for one’s spares box. Top quality resin castings as always.

This pack of figures contains four individuals, representing Japanese soldiers from the mid-war period to war’s end. They are animated in attacking poses and are full of life, perfect for a dynamic diorama or vignette. Excellent moulding quality and good anatomy are plus points.

Three new paint-sets are on offer from AK Interactive, two for figures and one for armour. The set for Vietnam War era US GIs comprises six acrylic colours – mostly greens of course – come in 17ml plastic bottles. The paints are formulated for hand-painting but if thinned, could be airbrushed for airbrushing larger areas. The camouflage painting guide on the back of the pack is particularly useful. Painters of ancients and perhaps Napoleonic figures will appreciate the series of six graduated yellows/ochres, very useful for shaded fabric effects. In association with Meng, AK Interactive have released a six-colour set for WW2 German AFVs. The threecolour tones are included, plus white, panzer grey and light yellow. EMBRAER 190 LUFTHANSA SCALE 1:144 • MATERIALS; IM, WS • ITEM; 03937 Considering that this kit was a newly tooled last year, it’s surprising that the moulds are starting to exhibit a little flash here and there, particularly on one wingtip, but it’s nothing terminal. The detail is excellent and it’s such a good-looking jet, the kit is hard to resist. The ‘190 is a fairly small commuter aircraft and so the model’s fuselage is just 25.3cm long, ideal for many modellers’ workbenches. The Lufthansa decals are a real plus point here, featuring beautifully printed blue/yellow tail emblems, fuselage stencils and markings for the doors and windows. MN

SE.5a WOLSELEY VIPER PROFIPACK EDITION SCALE 1:48 • MATERIALS; IM, PE, WS, PCM • ITEM NO.82131 Eduard’s kit comprises 111 parts in grey plastic (eighteen of these are marked ‘not for use’ in this boxing), eleven parts in clear, a single photo-etched fret with pre-painted colour and bare brass parts, self-adhesive painting masks and markings for six aircraft. Other options that do not apply to this version are also on the sprues. These include an alternative two-bladed propeller, a four-bladed propeller, a Hispano-Suiza engine and the early-style radiator. I’m not sure if there are enough parts on the sprues to actually build a Hispano-Suiza-powered SE.5a, but you won’t have long to wait anyway, as Eduard has announced a May release of the Royal Class boxing of this version. The lower and upper wings are both fullspan, and all control surfaces are separate. These is a single pair of interplane and cabane struts on each side, so this should not be too much of a chore. Deep locating holes and pins are present too. BG

GRIM REAPER, THE BADDEST OF THE BAD ‘OLD SCHOOL’ CHOPPER SCALE 1:8 • MATERIALS; IM, SVT, CP • ITEM; 85-7541 Here’s a wonderful blast from the past in the form of the sinister, death-themed Grim Reaper chopper. The original bike was designed California customiser Tom Daniel and Monogram (now incorporated into Revell) created this largescale 1:8 kit back in 1974. Here we have the original mouldings which, although slightly crude by today’s standards, still have the potential to build into a very eye-catching model. The frame and tank are moulded together but that’s fine because they’ll be the same colour when painted. Most of the engine parts are chromed, as are the exhausts, wheels and other parts. The huge front forks are square in section and the double seat is fabulous, with a padded pattern moulded in. In 1:8, the wheel spokes don’t look too over-scale and will benefit from a light colourwash of X-19 Smoke. The tyres are moulded in kit plastic and thus need a little assembly and painting; no problem. MN

SOPWITH F.1 CAMEL USAS SCALE; 1:32 • MATERIALS; IM, PE, WS • KIT NUMBER; 32072 It is finally here! Wingnut Wings held back from adding a Sopwith Camel to their range for years, and modellers were clamouring for one, simply because it’s such an important aircraft. And a greatlooking one too. Here, we are examining the F.1 in United States Air Service markings, which is but one of the Camels released and on the way from the company. As we have come to expect from WnW, the kit is an absolute marvel of detail with an extraordinary thoroughness that’s unmatched by pretty any other manufacturer except perhaps Tamiya. Naturally, the cockpit is fully depicted and comes complete with inner-fuselage structural framework, characteristic open floor, pilots seat with a wovenwicker effect pattern, instrument panel with decals for the dial faces and fuel tank. Photo-references dotted about the wonderful instruction booklet (another of Wingnut Wing’s trademark triumphs) so the modeller can add extra detailing such as cabling and plumbing as they proceed. We will bring you a full-build article on this stunning kit as soon as we can! MN

KENWORTH K-100 SCALE 1:25 • MATERIALS; IM, SVT, CP, WS • ITEM; 85-2513 There are few things that look better in model kit form than vintage US trucks and the K-100 cabover tractor is a fine example. This kit originally came out from Revell in 1982 as the Kenworth Aerodyne with an aerodynamic fairing on top of its cab roof and it has undergone a few transformations since, but the kit has remained fundamentally the same. And that’s a good thing, as it’s a very nicely detailed model that comes with a complete engine, multipart ladder chassis with air suspension, a comprehensive drivetrain and steerable front wheels. The cabin is the star of the show, with a fully detailed interior (including a TV and bed) with quilted-effect wall liners. The impressive, onepiece cabin shell is rendered with near in-scale rivets and is free from distortion. The new decals are very well printed and capture the retro appeal of this machine perfectly. A wonderful kit that stands up well to more recent truck kits, with great detail. The tyres even have sidewall logos (Michelin), something we see less and less of these days. MN

F-35A LIGHTNING II SCALE 1:32 • MATERIALS; IM, PE, WS • ITEM; 2506 Of all the modern military aviation subjects to choose, Italeri went for the most high-profile of the lot – the F-35A – for their newest kit release in 1:32. It’s a controversial machine that has been plagued with problems (what new fighter-aircraft hasn’t?), and it’s hardly a beauty, but the Lightning II is certainly an interesting design. Slightly sadly, the futuristic, squared-off edges of the F-117 Stealth are gone on new stealthy fighters and they have a more conventional, curvy look, but the F-35A has plenty of other design features that make it interesting. Italeri have reproduced the sawtoothedged panels on the fuselage with relish, and the oddly raised sections are well done. The model comes with a decent cockpit and while the seat and other structures will inevitably be replaced by resin and PE brass from the aftermarket guys, what we are given in the kit box will be perfectly adequate for a tidy, out-of-thebox build. The undercarriage bays carry excellent detail, as do the weapons bays. Talking of weaponry, Italeri provide a clutch of bombs and missiles to fit in the bays and hang from underwing pylons. MN

A handsome, retro subject when trucks looked like trucks. Impressive detail throughout

A very competent crack at this flawed future-fighter with plenty of detail inside and out

Not a lot to comment on here - it’s from the ‘80s but it still has lots of potential

Ultimately, the cockpit will benefit from a better seat and general detailing. A seated pilot figure would be nice too

KIT PREVIEW

TAKOM 1:35 MAUS V1 KIT NO.2049, 1:35 MAUS V2 KIT NO.2050

MARVELLOUS MINIATURE

MOUSE T

akom have released both the prototypes of the Porsche Vk.11001 Sd.Kfz.205, better known, ironically, as the ‘Maus’. Most of the main mouldings are the same, with the exception of the turret sprues of course, but there are numerous other differences in detail such as solid-disc (V1) and drilled (V2) roadwheels, top-deck variations (one large shell-deflector on V1, two additional small deflectors on V2), different glacis plates plus some other small fittings. Fundamentally, the two kits build up in the same manner, with the overwhelming majority of the parts-count being found in the suspension system and tracks. Each bogie unit builds up from around twenty components and the model has twelve bogies in total, so here there are 240 parts alone. Add the tracks (two parts per link) and we can see where all those parts go! The ‘no cement’ symbol appears in the track assembly so with some careful assembly they should remain articulated, but this will only become evident during assembly. Once the running gear

Takom have introduced two, all-new kits of the mighty WW2 German Maus super-heavy tank. How do they shape up?

has been cemented to the narrow central lower hull moulding and the tracks mounted, the upper hull can be built up, and this looks quite straightforward. Photo-etched grille parts are provided for the underside of the many cooling vents in the hull’s upper deck and their placement is clearly shown in the instructions. Cyanoacrylate glue will be needed to fix them in place. The V1’s test turret (for weighting purposes) is a simple box with sloped side panels and is hollow with an open top. Quite what was inside the original, but it was most likely the same as the model kit’s; empty. A neat final detail in the V1 kit is an access ladder, not found in the V2 boxing. The rolled-steel texture on the V2 turret is absolutely superb and no extra treatments will be needed here. Virtually the whole turret is moulded in one piece, with just the lower ‘floor’, mantlet, gun barrels and internal gun mount moulded individually. Detail across all parts is quite subtle, with no over the top textures or unrealistic weld seams; they are depicted, but in very a refined manner. No flash or sink

marks were detected on our review samples and all ejector-pin marks will be found on the hidden, reverse faces of parts. Colour painting guides will be found on the instruction booklets’ inside covers, offering different schemes for the tank. For V1, three paint options are shown; second prototype at Kummersdorf (dunkelgelb/ brown), first prototype (overall red-oxide primer) plus another for the second prototype featuring a camouflaged hull and a red-oxide primer test-turret. For V2, three suggestions are offered for the Maus as it would have appeared in Berlin 1945, Kummersdorf 1945 and Eastern Prussia 1946. Overall, these kits appear well designed, subtly detailed and not too complex to build. They will make imposing models in one’s display cabinet; they just need a figure or two, to suggest their immense size! ● AVAILABILITY; Takom models are widely available from good model shops and online. www.pocketbond.co.uk

here is an ancient oriental saying that every science fiction modeller must build at least two USS Enterprise kits in his lifetime. Or if there isn’t, I’m feel certain that there should be as I’m sure most SF modellers will have built at least one Enterprise model at some point. Mind you, if it was a true oriental saying it should probably have the codicil of ‘and at least one will have big wheels and rubber tyres’. I have to admit that I have lost track of the various Enterprise kits I have built over the years, particularly taking into account its various different incarnations, starting off with the Aurora kit in the early 1970s. And before you say anything, I know AMT manufactured the first Enterprise kit but on this side of the Atlantic the model was released under the Aurora brand. To tie in with the fiftieth anniversary of the

first episode of Star Trek being shown in the USA (although we had to wait until 1969 before it was shown in the UK) Revell Europe have re-released their 1:600 scale model of the original Enterprise (circa 2012) along with their 1:500 model of the 2009 iteration (circa 2013) in a (big) commemorative box. Why Revell produced the two versions in different scales is well and truly beyond me, but I will touch upon the scale of the 2009 version in the second part of this article. Opening the box you will find the white and clear runners individually bagged along with decals and colour instruction manuals. As is befitting the fiftieth anniversary I am going to look at the TOS (The Original Series) version of the Enterprise first and in a strange turn of fate I found myself starting work on it on the September 8th, the actual anniversary date (I missed the first

continent, and many would say that I have been making up for it ever since). One of the unusual features of the kit is that all the windows have been moulded in clear plastic, which I believe to be a first for a model of the original Enterprise. Looking at the kit parts it is obviously designed so that it can be fitted with lights: the nacelle caps are clear plastic; there are openings

between mating parts to allow cables to pass through and the engineering hull has some internal bracing which would happily accept a couple of batteries. Another feature that has caused some controversy within the online modelling community when the kit was first released is the quite prominent recessed panel lines. If you were being absolutely realistic panel lines would not be visible at all at such a small scale, but then again you wouldn’t get any differentiation between

panels at all which would make the model quite plain looking and so I believe we do have to apply a degree of artistic license. Besides, if the panel lines bother you too much there is a simple solution: fill them in!

WHICH VERSION?

Actually when considering how to finish your model you also may wish to take into account which version you are building and, yes I am referring to the original version of the NCC-1701 and not any of

its screen successors. There is the original model of the Enterprise that was created for the 1966 television series which was painted a light grey colour but because of studio lighting appears to be white when seen on screen. This model was refurbished for display in the Smithsonian Museum when a number of changes were made, including a more obvious panelling effect; although this has now been restored to its original paint finish only recently. There was also the cartoon series version; a brand new model made for the Deep Space Nine episode ‘Trials and Tribbulations’ and the CGI version created for the digitally remastered DVD and Blu-Ray releases, and, of course, the version that exists in our heads made up of happy memories and vivid imaginations. To some extents I decided to go for the latter option heavily influenced by the CGI and DS9 versions. I decided to build the model with the panel lines left exposed, which I was to be very glad that I did as the build went on, and

All the opaque parts were first given a coat of grey primer Vallejo Dark Blue Grey was then airbrushed over the panel lines Pre-shading began with random panel highlighting

The dark ‘pre-shading’ of the hull’s panel lines is now complete

which also made me realise that Revell’s decision to include them was a very canny move that would benefit a lot of model makers and showed that, along with the consideration of lighting the model, they had given a lot of thought into the production of this kit. I realised that if I was not to spend a short lifetime masking all the windows I would have to paint all the parts prior to construction. I have painted a number of Federation Starships over the years and I tend to use what I call my ‘Starship Paint Set’ when building Star Trek models: batches of paint that I have mixed up using Liquitex Titanium White, Neutral Grey and French Blue Grey in different proportions to create a set of off-white colours. In this instance I decided that I would try an off the shelf product and settled on Vallejo Pale Blue Grey as the primary colour with Blue Grey Pale as the secondary.

The engine nacelles were first base-coated with orange

Here we see an engine nacelle test assembled; the pre-shading will be airbrushed over later

BASIC COLOURS

All the opaque parts were given a coat of grey primer and then I randomly applied Vallejo Light Grey to different panels and then airbrushed Vallejo Dark Blue Grey over the panel lines. When this was dry I used a 0.3mm thick pigment liner pen to draw in each panel line before building up a mist coat of the Pale Blue Grey as the final surface colour. I believe my grown-up colleagues

Over the pre-shading processes, the primary colour has been applied on the main hull and the lower ‘fuselage’ body

in the world of aircraft and military modelling have called this technique pre-shading and allows for subtle variations in colour rather than creating a distinct panelled effect. I

masked off the appropriate areas and airbrushed Vallejo Blue Grey Pale as I wanted a relatively subtle tonal change between the primary and secondary colours. The base was airbrushed with

Vallejo Gold and Black before being given several coats of Satin Varnish and the rear of the clear windows were painted a combination of black and white as I had decided that I would not be TMMI 260 June 2017

illuminating the model. As the model wasn’t going to be lit I could give the outer face of the inner nacelle cap a coat of white primer and then airbrush a coat of Vallejo Flat Orange. I added some Vallejo Flat Yellow to the Orange to create a lighter shade which was then airbrushed between the raised ridges

and to the apex of the cap. When dry I applied pastel pigment powders around the ridges to further darken them and blend them in: this was then given a coat of matt varnish to seal the powder in place. I wanted to try and get a slightly different effect for the nacelle caps and so decided to airbrush a coat of Liquitex Iridescent Orange. The Liquitex range of Iridescent colours are translucent and so must be applied over a base colour, but contain flakes that reflect the light with a metallic sheen. Whilst this will never fully replicate the rotating illuminated caps of the television programme I did feel that it brought them to life a bit more than just painting them flat orange.

ENGINE PODS

I then started the first stage of the assembly process by gluing the nacelle caps in place between the two halves of the nacelles, which I had only pre-shaded and not applied the final colour to. I masked off the nacelle caps to avoid damaging the paintwork and filled and sanded the join line between the parts. To avoid over spill of primer onto the

already completed pre-shading I masked off the remainder of the nacelles before applying a coat of primer over the sanded section. Once removed this left a slight raised ridge in the paintwork which I could have removed but decided to retain as it further gave the impression of more panelling. The paintwork to the nacelles was then completed as per the rest of the model. The rear globes to the nacelles were painted pure white and given a coat of Liquitex Iridescent White for effect. Normally I would apply decals last to the model, but as you need to apply varnish over them to avoid the silvering effect and varnish can be known to fog clear parts I decided to put the decals on before going any further. All the parts were given a spray coat of gloss varnish and the decals were applied using Micro-Sol and Micro-Set decal solutions. The decals were of a nice consistency and went on very easily. You will probably find yourself with some spare as there are some decals for areas I chose to paint and also decals for window openings should you wish to paint over the clear plastic (told you some thought had gone into this model). When dry the decals were given a further coat

Coins were fixed inside the rear portion of the lower hull to help balance the model when complete Don’t forget the markings on the underside!

ONTO THE MAIN DISH

With the painting and

decalling complete I started construction of the saucer section, pylons and engineering hull as per the instructions. I glued the windows in place with Humbrol Clear-fix which

I applied using a cocktail stick as it has a very thick consistency. The instructions note that a 90g weight needs to be placed in the rear of the engineering hull and not having any lead

weights to hand I used two part epoxy putty to fix in place some one and two penny coins – who says there’s no money in model making! The two halves of the engineering hull and the

pylons needed to be filled and sanded along the join lines as per the nacelles, but the two halves of the saucer went together nicely with no filling required as the join appeared to be another panel line. The pylons were fitted to the engineering hull and the cover piece just pushed in place, again with the join lines looking like panel lines. Before fixing the nacelles to the pylons I glued the clear outer nacelle caps in place using clear drying PVA glue. You may wonder why I used different glue for the clear parts: the reason being that the Humbrol

glue has more of a robust grip than the PVA and could be applied in areas that wouldn’t be seen in case it went all over the place. The PVA is far more controllable when applying it but has a slightly weaker bond, which wouldn’t be an issue for the nacelle caps as they could be easily re-fixed if necessary whereas if the windows fell out I would need to open the model up to re-fix them. The completed model was then glued to the base.

FINAL THOUGHTS

I must admit that I was really pleasantly surprised

by the amount of thought that Revell has put into this kit. I don’t know if they ever intend to re-release it at a future date with a lighting set, or if they have just put some thought as to how a modeller might do it themselves. If a modeller doesn’t like the panel lines they can fill and sand to their hearts content, but if you want to minimise the sand and fill process because of painting or lighting reasons the join lines blend in with the panel lines, and truth be told you could even give this kit to a beginner and they would be

hard pressed not to finish it to a reasonable standard. Right, its time to get stuck into the 2009 version, but that’s a story for another day. As a post script I have taken photos of this kit with the AMT Enterprise at 1:650 scale for comparison. I must admit that I made the model well over twenty years ago and looking at it now it is positively crude, so I beg your forgiveness for a stepping stone in my model making history. ●

The first sixty pages cover tanks of 1-4 Cavalry in Tikrit, Iraq and provide some utterly invaluable photographs of the vehicles, not only their hardware and fittings but equally crucial high-quality, close-up photos of the weathering patterns. The latter are fascinating to observe and present an enticing challenge for the modeller to reproduce. Following this is a fifty-page chapter on CARC Tan-painted M1A1s of the 3rd Infantry Division in Iraq and here we have some interior views, again showing technical details as weathering patterns. The M1A1 TUSK of the 3rd Infantry Division in Iraq is covered and if that’s not enough for you, there’s a final chapter on 2-37 armour in Iraq and the M1A1 in the field. If you’re planning an Abrams modelling project, this book should be considered an essential purchase. MN

And you’ll need a good set of references so you can add final details like electrical cabling, tie-downs, weld-seams, aerials, data stencils and more. One photo on page forty shows a close-up on one of the cover/launchers for the MICLIC projector and it appears to be made from a fairly coarse-textured composite material, well worth replicating on a model for an extra touch of realism. There are some fascinating photographs here, and more than enough to help the modeller enhance his or her kit build. MN

BURNT-OUT IN AVRANCHES A creative use for an AHN truck in 1:35

W

ith Tamiya issuing ICM's 1:35 kit of the (Renault) AHN 3.5 ton truck in a set with Tamiya's own Flak37 AA gun, you might be looking for a creative use for the model that doesn't involve a static, 'at rest' setting. This extraordinary photo from WW2 shows several wrecks of vehicles from a German convoy in an Avranches street lined with trees and houses. In the foreground we see a GI seated in a Dodge 3/4t command car with a Thompson Cal.45 SMG and another GI standing on the path to the left. Both are soldiers of the 4th US Armored Division and the photo was taken on July 30th 1944. On the left a Personenkraftwagen ('38 Packard Series Six sedan) with a registration of the Waffen SS: SS 915 195. To the right, we see the aforementioned AHN 3.5 ton truck, completely burnt out, but with the cabin in good enough shape for it to be identifiable. An evocative scene and one that would make a great diorama. Editor’s Choice will return next month. See you again next time
