IN BRIEF...

ON THE WAY FROM TAMIYA 1:20 FERRARI SF70H 2017 As you can see from the cover and on pages six and seven this issue, Tamiya has quietly created a 100% new, 1:20 kit of the Vettel/Räikkönen Ferrari SF70H from the 2017 season! The model was kept under wraps almost right up until the Nuremberg Toy Fair where it was due for its official unveiling, but naturally, news leaked out. The model is quite a complex production and will test one's masking skills! Turn to page six/seven for more details.. www.hobbyco.net

VETTEL ETAL! TO THE M As one of this year's (almost) best-kept secrets, Tamiya's all new 1:20 replica of Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Räikkönen's 2017 Ferrari SF70H surprised and delighted visitors to the 2018 Nuremberg Toy Fair, where the model was first announced. TMMI's Editor is the first to cut plastic...

T

MMI was the first to receive the kit outside of Japan, and our immediate impressions were extremely positive. The kit depicts the Vettel/ Räikkönen SF70H car as it appeared at the 2017 Australian Grand Prix and features a 'screwed down' rear cowling as no engine is depicted. In the box we are presented with two sprues of black polystyrene, two in red and one in white. Two sheets of decals are included, one for the sponsors' logos and the other carrying quite extensive carbon-fibre effect panels for the car's exposed chassis areas. These come in the form of normal waterslide decals and just require application in the familiar manner. The kit also comes with some polycaps to secure the wheels, micro-screws and a small screwdriver. On this particular Ferrari there are

more body colours than just red and to accurately define the boundaries, Tamiya include a set of self-adhesive masking templates which the modeller must trim out from the sheet, cutting on the printed guide lines. The soft synthetic rubber tyres are slicks and decals (in yellow to indicate 'Softs') are provided for their sidewall markings. They are printed in reverse to ease their application; this is explained fully in the instructions. As you can see from some of the photos below, I have already begun work on the kit - I couldn't resist! The very first thing that hits you is just how complicated the aerodynamics of modern Formula 1 cars are, which makes the creation of a model kit quite an undertaking. No longer just a cigar-shaped body and two wings, the latest F1 designs feature aero-optimisation

on every single external component and the only effective way to depict this in miniature is to mould each element individually, which in turn makes masking and painting significantly more complex. But that's all part of the challenge and Tamiya have done an astounding job of representing all the essential downforcegenerating hardware in 1:20. I will be working on this kit

as quickly as possible and I will bring you a detailed, step-by-step article as soon as I can! ● Availability; Tamiya models and accessories are widely available from good model shops and online. UK import and distribution by The Hobby Company Limited; www.hobbyco.net

The tyres, as always in Tamiya kits, are perfect replicas of the full-sized racing slicks; they even smell good!

KIT PREVIEW TAMIYA 1:35 US SELF-PROPELLED HOWITZER M109A6 PALADIN (IRAQ WAR) ● KIT NO.37026

The latest cooperative release between Tamiya and Italeri takes the form of the US Army’s monstrous 155mm M109A6 ‘Paladin’ SPH

LONG-RANGE HITTER

T

he US Army M109A6 Paladin (Iraq War) in 1:35 is the latest release in the popular Tamiya/Italeri series. This style of cooperative production has been around for years and the box-top is clearly marked with both Tamiya and Italeri logos, so everyone is clear about what they are getting. In this production specifically, Tamiya’s contributions comprise Tamiya figures (in fact, the whole sprue of excellent modern US accessories from 2003) plus another Tamiya sprue (2012) of fuel and ammunition cans that includes an improved CIP (Coalition Identification

Panel). Italeri themselves have also made some changes to the kit in the form of the gun muzzle velocity system (MVS), improved roadwheels, hatch detail, spare track links and more. The turret stowage racks come with photo-etched brass panels which greatly improve their appearance and the other detail enhancements all contribute to the sharpening up of the base model. The tracks, although still one-piece vinyl items, are not bad, but to do justice to this otherwise very presentable kit an aftermarket set will be essential. These are

available from Friulmodel and other manufacturers. Markings are provided for three machines, all based in Iraq in the early 2000s. The differences are just in the vehicle numbers and the presence of the aforementioned CIP on one example. ●

After the F4U-1 and the F4U-1A, Didier Michaux waited some time for the F4U-1D Corsair in 1:32 from Tamiya. His patience was finally rewarded... 10

D

eveloped during the Second World War at the request of the US Marine Corps, the F4U-1D is the first fully developed version of the Corsair, able to operate safely from aircraft carriers. It could now truly qualify as a fighter-bomber, providing valuable air support to ground troops during landings in the Philippines and Okinawa. The '1D could carry two 1,000-pound bombs or two extra large tanks under the centre wing section and on late-production models, four 5-inch rockets under each of the outer sections. Between April 1944 and February 1945, approximately 1,700 examples of the F4U-1D were produced. To respond to desperate Japanese tactics (suicide attacks), the F4U-1D was first loaded onboard on the USS Essex in December 1944. This was also the beginning of its deployment on other US Navy aircraft carriers from which the fighter took part in the operations against the Japanese islands. The F4U-1D is the most advanced variant of the Corsair to have actually taken part in the Pacific War; we can not take into account the F4U-4 that did not arrive in this theatre of operations until the last weeks of the conflict and did not play a significant role. The late version's hour of glory would come five years later in Korea...

The cockpit builds up into a beautifully detail module that will fit between the fuselages halves

The firewall previously fitted with the exhaust pipes is installed. Location pins ensure a perfect alignment when the engine is mounted Not wishing to present the model with the engine covers removed, the author limited the weathering and patination to the engine parts that would remain visible on the finished model, mainly the front face. The shades used on the powerplant are again those indicated in the instructions: XF-16, X-18 and XF-66. Tamiya Black Panel Line Accent Color was used to enhance the cylinder cooling fins and bolts

The cockpit fits perfectly into the right fuselage half; it will be the same for the left side. Behind the pilot’s head-rest, the fuselage top section is higher than the F4U-1A version

After installation of the armoured glass shield, the previously masked-up windscreen (adhesive masks are provided in the kit) was cemented in place and painted. The parts adjacent to the cockpit have already been sprayed with AS-8 Navy Blue via airbrush

The engine is seen here embedded between the front cover and the crown of cooling flaps, already painted in AS-8 to avoid masking afterwards. The alignment of the last row of cylinders with the exhaust pipes of the firewall is perfect

It is at this stage that the leaflet splits into two distinct parts: one for extended wings and one for folded wings. Wings extended was chosen for this project. On this view of the assembled wing centre section, we clearly see the longitudinal members that will support and perfectly align the external sections. The central part constituting the 'floor' of the cockpit is painted in Interior Green

All the components of the wing ready for assembly. The horizontal stabilizers have been permanently glued. If you opt for the 'VMF-351' markings offered by Tamiya, it is better to fix apply after painting the rump of the plane in white, which will avoid complex masking

FINALLY!

It took three years after the F4U-1A was released in 2014 (itself appearing a year after the F4U-1) to see the arrival of the F4U-1D in 1:32 by Tamiya. I will not repeat the complete description of this kit for two reasons: it borrows a large majority of parts from the two kits that preceded it and many pages have already been devoted to them in TMMI. As expected from Tamiya, all the specifics of the F4U-1D have been taken into account (weapons loads and tanks, reinforced outer wing sections, bubble canopy without framework and cockpit details etc). The two markings-schemes on offer are particularly well-chosen, with white and yellow markings enhancing the Sea Blue livery of the aircraft. And yet, as you can see, I opted for a livery that's a little more subdued, based on one of the two offered. More explanations about this will be found in the photo captions since I have chose to share with you the progress of work in a visual way, focusing on the main stages of construction and painting, plus the specific details of this version. ●

Main undercarriage assembled, painted and patinated. This aircraft operated from an aircraft carrier, so the muck build-up was limited to fluid drips. Note the brake lines provided in the kit (injected plastic), the beautiful rendering of the springs (accented by a black colour-wash) and the data plate provided as a decal

The propeller blades were painted still attached to the sprue to facilitate handling; X-8 Yellow was applied over an undercoat of white for the tips, then X-18 Semi-Gloss Black was applied after masking

The legs are now firmly attached to the roofs of the wells. The assembly is robust and will support the weight of the model without problem. Separate parts will cover the peripheral areas of the UC wells. If they were not individually moulded, the installation of the legs would be impossible

The hub was also painted satin black, with a drybrush of matt aluminium. The spinner boss was sprayed AS-8 Navy Blue with some silver scratches on the front

The clear areas of the bubble canopy were sealed off with the masks provided in the kit and then painted in the same way as the windshield. After drying, the mirrors in photo-etched metal were fixed under the front frame

Mini Review... HAULER 1:35 COFFINS (HLU35103) www.hauler.cz

A slightly sombre addition to a diorama perhaps, these coffins are excellent 1:35 miniature replicas of the real things, right down to the wood grain and internal bracing. Four are provided, in two styles; plain rectangular and the ‘classic’ six-sided shape, all with lids. The parts are impeccably cast in grey resin and just require the excess pour-gates trimming off and the edges sanding.

Only one external tank, the right one, has been installed. This asymmetrical configuration helped to counter the torque of the large propeller driven by a motor with enormous power. VER SLEEPS What better way to give your Hasegawa 1:24 VW pick-up some character than a battered, time-aged rusty effect? Robert Riley tells us how he did it...

W

eather it has that fresh paint look, fully re-furbished or left to rust out to give it that 'rat look', the VW Type 2 Pick-Up just looks cool. So with that in mind, this was always going to be

a fun project to undertake, as I could really get creative with my vision in how I wanted the finished build to look. Of course the only way to go is rusty, at around forty years old of course something's got to give.

RESEARCH V WEATHERING I’d never tried the rust

technique before so I was very eager to give it my best shot. I can handle most methods to achieve a specific outcome but this was different. I wanted a more three-dimensional look rather than a painted look so I set about researching the ways; the salt technique, paint chipping, hairspray, pigments, paint flaking, baking powder… There was just so much to take in and figure out. Thank goodness for YouTube and its rabbit hole of amazing video channels directed at helping people like you and me. There truly is some real talent out there who do a great job in promoting our amazing hobby. The actual kit itself is quite simplified with few parts but very nicely moulded. My main surprise

was the body shell, it’s a very nice one piece moulded part which makes things feel very solid and gave me confidence in working with it. So off I set in deepening the shut lines and picking out anything else along the way. I dry-fitted all the body parts – of which there are only four – to make sure of a clean fit. Hasegawa have engineered a very nice model so all the parts just slot together nicely. I decided to adapt some areas on the exterior to enhance the details, more will become apparent as I go along. I started by sanding away and replacing the lower draw moulded plastic handles with some Hobby Design 1mm turned metal rivets and some Top Studio 1.3mm washers to finish off the look. These dry-fitted nicely and now I was happy I could add these the end.

Lifecolor (www.airbrushes.com) and Vallejo (www.creativemodels.co.uk) acrylic paints were used to create the initial rusted effect

The colour tones were kept varied and patchy for realism

Granulated salt was then sprinkled onto the wetted surface

The white portion of the body colour was then airbrushed on

18

Plain water was used to dissolve the salt, revealing the rusty under-colour

PATINA TIME

Time to apply all of my research, prep and practice to the main body. I airbrushed several light coats of Zero Paints micro filler/primer and lightly sanded it back. Then it was ready for some colour. I used a mixture of Vallejo browns and Lifecolor paints; the latter came highly recommended so I went and purchased their rust colour paint and pigments set. These are fabulous rust colours that really do look the part and capture rust in its various forms. I airbrushed the whole shell with the dark brown – burned rust, followed by the medium brown – corroded rust, but targeted more specific rusted areas. Finally to airbrush the lightest colour, Streaking Rust. I turned down the compressor pressure so to achieve an effect called stippling. This effect makes the colour spit rather than a clear spray, thus giving the look of sporadic oxidation. This all may seem a bit much but it’s worth the groundwork as later its what’s underneath that matters. This technique was employed throughout.

CHIPPING AWAY

The front and rear bumpers needed some corrosion and some paint chipping. So I stripped the 'chrome' with some household bleach, cleaned them up, primed and coloured them with a base brown. This is where the real fun with pigments began. As a pigment fixer I used a diluted mixture of Humbrol Matt Cote and enamel thinners and brushed it evenly over the bumpers. I then used a soft brush, dipped it in each rust pigment colour independently and dabbed them all over each bumper. Trying to not to dab to much of the same colour in the same area so to keep it sporadic and random. This was left to dry and cure, the pigments soak into the mixture and dry on pretty hard so this was perfect and safe to handle. The next step was to lightly dab on small areas with Humbrol Liquid Maskol where I felt it could be more corroded and oxidised. Once all of that work was cured the bumpers had a coat of matt white and was ready for the next step Blue Tack! I gently rubbed the Blu Tack over each

U

Various finely powdered weathering pigments were used to enhance the surface ‘rust’ on the front and rear bumpers. It’s worth gathering photographic reference of real rusted steel when doing this

Tools needed for this effect; Maskol liquid mask, tweezers, a Q-Tip, some sponge to dab on the pigments and a mixing palette

Torn piece of sponge were dipped into the Maskol, which is a liquid latex masking fluid (with a strong ammonia smell). It was dabbed onto the treated bumpers in areas were the rust was to show through

Matt white was airbrushed over the whole bumper moulding, in light layers

After peeling the Maskol patches off with the tweezers, the patches of oxidised steel show through, looking very convincing indeed. Colour-washes can then be applied to further enhance the effect

We’ll be taking a closer look at this kit in a future issue. The model depicts an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) as used by US military forces where maximum mobility is needed for troops. The model has been mastered in CAD and resin parts made from a 3D-printed master, so it is extremely crisp and precise with excellent detail. A range of figures and accessories have also been produced for it. More details soon.

Highlight Model Studio make a superb 1:24 toolbox, which was made up by the author for the VW even though it was not installed for the final photos

The result is a perfect miniature replica of a sturdy tool case. Fantastic! www.highlightmodelstudio.com Once the photo-etched nickel-steel box has been folded to shape and assembled, it was time for some decal stickers...

DETAILS

Then it was over to some really nice photo-etched details from Eero Kumanto’s ‘Highlight Model Studio’ (www.highlightmodelstudio. com). A self-confessed VW lover, Eero’s etch designs are also a perfect fit for Tamiya’s classic 1:24 Beetle, so they are worth checking out. All of the windows would be replaced and upgraded, so I opted to replace the box stock rear window with HMS’s fabulous 'safari-style' photo-etch part. The front windows would again be treated to the safari-style look, but this time are split and will be hung wide open. I’d need to scratch out some clear styrene to fill the inside of each window frame but that’s not a big job. The fiddliest part was folding the mounting brackets for each of the window frame arms and locating them into the right spots. Once I was happy I added some 1mm rivets to help locate them better; big fingers make that a mission I can tell you, but worth it. I chose to scratchbuild the side windows open and added in a 0.75mm rivet to

each sliding panel to give the look of an open/close handle. Then I finished off with some decals just for fun and a splash of colour. The wood-look strips on the back of the truck bed were airbrushed using lots of brown shades to replicate a natural wood effect then were drilled out in several places to accept seventy-five turned metal rivets.

INTERIOR

Hasegawa left this area pretty empty so a splash of colour, some imagination and minor upgrades would enhance the look dramatically. I rusted and colour-treated the floor pan and dash area in the same way as the rest of the truck, only this time, I went all in with the detail painting using various methods and techniques. I covered the bench seat in Zero Designs adhesive flocking material then gave it a worn used look finally adding some seat belt material and HMS lap belts. The gear knob was the final part to be worked on and I hand painted the Brazilian flag on and around it.

CURRENT AFFAIRS René van der Hart digs out his Airfix 1:48 English Electric Lightning F.2A/F6 from the stash and adds a resin engine and cockpit. The result is staggering

T

he Lightning was probably the most iconic fighter in Europe during the Cold War era. This powerful Mach 2 interceptor is still one of the favourite modelling subjects for many people, at least for me it is. Airfix released its wonderful 1:48 offering in 1997 and has it been re-released several times in different versions since then. I still had the

original release in my stash which is fine, except for the decals which were unusable. Recently I came across a photo on the internet of a Lightning with its top engine bay open. This was I wanted to build! I couldn't believe my luck when I found out that CMK has a beautiful resin engine in its range, which saved me an enormous amount of scratchbuilding.

BUILD V THE As usual, the build starts

with the cockpit. The kit parts are not bad but I decided to use an Aires resin cockpit set which consists of a resin tub, ejection seat and panel shroud. The instrument panel and seat belts are provided on the photo-etch fret. After cleaning and gluing the belts on the seat, all parts were given an Alclad Black primer layer and painted according to photos of the real plane. As with all jet planes, the rivets are flush with the aircraft skin and hardly visible. The light grey finish on the late period aircraft got pretty dirty in time, making the rivets visible. This was the look I wanted to go for which meant adding a lot of rivets, so out came the rivet wheel and ruler. Luckily there are quite a few photos to be found on the internet and after some research I knew where most of the rivets and missing panel lines had to go. Before any assembly could be started, the cockpit and fuselage had to be adapted to take the resin parts. This meant removing all the model's cockpit details and cutting out the panels for the engine bay. The fit of the resin parts was remarkably good I must say and combined with the good fit of the kit, assembly of the fuselage went quite smoothly. The wings, engine and tail were next to attach and again the fit here was good, with only small amounts of filler needed to fill fine gaps. Masking and cementing the clear parts in place, plus the speed brake doors concluded the build of the main parts. Before painting I always lightly buff all surfaces to be sure everything is smooth. A coat of Alclad black primer is a good base for the grey camouflage to follow. Paint of choice is Mr Hobby Aqueous (acrylic) which I thin quite a lot. Building up the colours in thin layers, randomly airbrushed over the surface creates a mottled, realistic effect. Using the same colour with a few drops of white paint several areas were faded a bit. Many subtle colour differences are key to make a single colour look interesting.

MARKINGS V NEW As mentioned, the kit decals were next to useless, so I bought a decal set from Xtradecal. Unfortunately the white lines on the wings and fuselage are not included, which meant I had to mask and airbrush them with white paint. This actually looks better than decals anyway. To form a good base, a coat of Alclad Aquagloss was airbrushed on after lightly buffing the painted surface. After all decals and panel lines had been applied/enhanced, another coat was needed to seal everything for the next step: applying a wash. I wanted the rivets to be visible but not overly stand out. Neutral Gray from AK Interactive was the best suited for this job. Covering the whole model not only made the rivets and panel lines stand out but also weathers the rest of the

model as well. The wash was wiped of with kitchen paper and difficult to reach places were cleaned with a brush; turpentine can be used if the wash is hard to remove. The rear portions of full size aircraft can get very dirty and recreating this convincingly can be a challenge. I ended up using a mixture of black and dark brown pastel powders which adhere only lightly to the Aquagloss coat. This turned out to be a positive thing because now I could slowly build up the grime and dirt without the risk of overdoing it. Other parts like the rudder, flaps and random parts that would get dirty in real life, received the same treatment. When satisfied with the result, a mist coat of Aquagloss fixed the pastel powder in place. The resin engine is beautifully cast and it is a joy to paint. Again, black

primer was used as a base for the metallic colours. I used several Alclad shades – Aluminium and Pale Burnt Metal – consulting photos for reference. Smaller details were brush-painted with several mixes of Vallejo Steel, Black and Brass. A 'mist' coat of Aquagloss, followed by a dark wash from Mig Productions, gave a lot of depth and a used look to the engine. The engine bay door is also included in the CMK set and was painted with Alclad Aluminium and given the same treatment as the engine. The undercarriage was cleaned up and painted Alclad Duralumin. The wheels were painted with black primer and the wheel hubs brush painted aluminium. Again a grey wash was used to give it all more depth. As a final touch, a boarding ladder was scratchbuilt from plastic strips and rod.

This build was a true joy and the Lightning is a nice addition to my collection. The wonderful engine makes it even more interesting to look at. The Airfix kit is still, after twenty years, a good kit and is currently available with far better decals as well. ●

T

he versatility of the Panzer IV chassis was limitless; tanks, recovery vehicles, assault guns, and self-propelled artillery all took advantage of the venerable platform. Born from lessons learned during the Battle of Stalingrad, the Sd.Kfz.166 Sturmpanzer 43 was designed to be a fire support vehicle that could blast away structures where the enemy took refuge. Commonly referred to as the 'Brummbär' by Allied intelligence the vehicle was known as the Stupa 43 (Sturmpanzer 1943) among the Germans. The production of a little over 300 vehicles lasted from April 1943 to March 1945. Production was not continuous and spanned four series with modifications occurring during each timeframe. The Stupa 43 first saw action during the Battle of Kursk with SturmpanzerAbteilung 216, not the vehicle’s ideal environment. It would further go on to serve with three other battalions (217, 218, and

219) until the end of the war. Western Allies first experienced the vehicle at Anzio followed by Normandy and ultimately culminating in Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge. The model illustrated in this article depicts a vehicle from Sturmpanzer-Abteilung 217 which participated in the Battle of the Bulge. The vehicle is detailed in several low quality photographs traversing a muddy road in an intense winter storm. However, the unique disc pattern applied to several vehicles is clearly visible and served as inspiration.

TAMIYA’S REBIRTH

Tamiya’s first Brummbär was released over forty years ago and represented a mid-production vehicle. Based on their original Pz.IV chassis, the kit was simplified and contained features for an optional motor. Fast forward to 2017 and Tamiya has utilised new Pz.IV tooling to bring back this mobile pillbox. The kit I received was a pre-production sample moulded in light

The gun is engineered so well that no seem filling or cleaning is required and it can be positioned in any operational orientation. Additionally, the gunner’s scope was drilled out

grey plastic. Production kits are the same in all aspects and include: a set of synthetic rubber, one-piece tracks, polycaps, a length of braided fabric cable and decal a sheet. This time Tamiya opted for a late production version with the most noticeable difference being the bow machine gun station. Other differences include: driver’s vision port, roof configuration, rear

access hatch and gun mount. Inspecting the sprues presents no surprises for a Tamiya kit. Arguably the best manufacturer of plastic model kits, Tamiya delivers on this as well. All of the parts are crisply moulded and have no flash. Of particular note is the kit contains ten sets of steel rimmed road wheels, which is not sufficient if wishing to represent some late war

After a few more hours I’m finished with the superstructure. The author prefer to assemble nearly everything prior to painting

34

30/01/2018 17:35

A simple jig was made from Evergreen strip and sheet styrene to aid in assembling the single link tracks. At this point the injection pin marks are still present on each link

Once the tracks are glued in place the injection pin marks are sanded away. Note, only the bottom run is fixed, this accelerates the building process by not wasting time on blemishes that won’t be seen after assembly

vehicles. Fortunately, the vehicle I chose to model had half steel rimmed road wheels. The rest of the road wheel sets, eight in total, are the typical rubber rimmed version. Another thing to note is the kit only contains an early style idler. Again, not a problem for the vehicle I’m modelling but late production Brummbärs featured both early and late style idler wheels.

EASY ASSEMBLY

I enjoy getting the more challenging aspects of a build finished first, so assembly began on the suspension by attaching the leaf spring units to the hull, followed by the idlers, sprockets, return rollers and the inner road wheels. Depending on the model, I find attaching nearly all of the suspension components before painting not only speeds up the building time but makes finishing the model easier as well. Next, rear and front plate details were added and attention was turned to the superstructure.

U

The author's first attempt in replicating the canvas cover was unsuccessful. He thought he could add putty and sculpt the folds, but it proved too difficult for his novice sculpting skills!

Attempt two worked much better. This time a large thin sheet was made and folded to create a realistic appearance. After completing the cover excess putty was removed with an X-Acto blade

The same process was repeated for the large top on top of the roof. Very easy and fun!

Value Gear stowage was added to the rear deck and was complimented with more homemade tarps

Black primer creates an excellent base for painting. The author prefers black because it covers all of the hard to reach places, which can act as a shadow after applying the base-coat

The first coat of Dunkelgelb was 1:1 mix of XF-60 Dark Yellow and XF-55 Deck Tan. The author prefers using Deck Tan because it has a softer lightening effect when compared to using white

To accurately reflect a late war chocolate brown, a few drops of XF-18 Medium Blue were added to XF-64 Red Brown

V

The upper hull can be broken down into three large sub-assemblies which include: the casemate, gun/ superstructure plate and rear deck. The large, one-piece casemate only needs the roof and rear plate adding to be structurally complete. As expected, the fit was perfect and no filler was required. Smaller details were added and in no time at all the casemate was finished. A unique feature of the 15cm gun is a four-piece configuration that represents rifling; shame the cover will hide it. When complete, the gun was attached to the hull, which was secured

36

by a polycap. If desired, the gun can be oriented in any operational position. I opted for the standard resting position because I was representing a vehicle in transit. Assembly of the rear deck went smoothly and before I knew it, all that remained were the tracks. I discarded the one piece tracks in favour of a set of Magic Tracks from Dragon’s Jagdpanzer L/70A. To aid in assembly I created a simple jig from sheet and strip styrene. I began by making two lengths of tracks and after drying for ten minutes they were draped over the suspension. The process went

incredibly fast and I had both sides finished within an hour. Next, it was time to remove the injection pin marks located on the inner face of every track. What might seem a daunting task, which should have been resolved prior to assembly, is something I find easier now after the tracks have been mounted. Fortunately, the injection pin marks were raised and only the outer portion of the lower run needed sanding away. Every other area was hidden by wheels or not exposed when viewing the model. This simple deviation from traditional practice helped shave hours off the build.

CRAZY ABOUT CANVAS

The vehicle I chose to model had so much personality; dirty, unique camouflage scheme and loaded with stowage and canvas covers. During non-combat travel Brummbärs can be seen fitted with canvas covers to protect the barrel and traversing area from dirt and debris. After studying several photographs and reviewing the available aftermarket options I decided to create my own tarps and cover. I started by mixing equal parts of Aves Apoxie Sculpt, kneading it like dough. Once thoroughly mixed, I covered my working

March 2018 TMMI 269

30/01/2018 17:35

Now the real fun begins! Thankfully, the masks from DN Models made this process painless

After adding the first layer of disc pattern, a mix of 1:1 XF-58 Olive Green to XF-71 Cockpit Green (IJN) was applied

area, roller and hands with talcum powder (the more the better). Using the rod I began to roll out the blob of putty, which was flipped and rotated after three to five rolls. When the putty showed signs of sticking, more powder was added, if there is not enough powder the piece will tear. After rolling to the appropriate thickness, an X-Acto blade was used to cut the desired shape. I had to be careful when cutting because dragging the blade can

and looked unnatural. As a result, I removed everything and started afresh. This time I made a large, thin sheet of putty and cut it into a circle with the centre removed and a slit through one side. I placed the new shape on the mantlet and began the tedious process of working around the area in a clockwise motion, creating folds. When I reached the underside, excess putty was removed and the edges were blended. I was surprised how well it turned out.

deform and tear the sheet of putty. Next, the tarp was laid on the vehicle and formed over details; folds were also created as well. An old brush dampened with water removed any unwanted figure prints and smoothed the tarp's surface. A similar approach was taken with the gun canvas after a failed first attempt. Initially, I put a single piece of sheet putty to the exact size needed and I intended to layer putty and sculpt folds. This proved to be too difficult

POLKA-DOT BIKINI

Before painting the elaborate camouflage pattern, the model needed a coat of primer to unify its surface. A cheap can of black aerosol primer from a local hardware store is my method of choice for priming. Next, a base layer of Dunkelgelb was airbrushed; looking back, this step was not necessary because the final colour applied will be Dunkelgelb after masking. The first camouflage colour to be laid down was late war

U

The author wasn’t satisfied with his initial dark yellow colour, so he added significantly more Deck Tan for a final ratio of 5:1 Deck Tan to Dark Yellow

After removing the masks some overspray was apparent in certain areas

The single vehicle numeral was added using Eduard’s large number vinyl mask set. The author is paranoid of overspray, hence the wide Tamiya tape

V German brown, a mix of

XF-64 Red Brown and XF-18 Medium Blue. Tamiya paint dries fast and the model was only set aside a few hours before applying the first layer of disc masks. The masks I used were created by DN Models and came in blocks of circles. To create the random patterns I had to cut them to shape. However, since using this set I worked with DN Models to develop a new set named V3, which comprises random patterns that don’t require cutting.

A quick fix came in the form of Alliance Model Works PE masks. The two step process was something that should have been done from the beginning

The painting and masking process was repeated for the green portions and lastly a coat of late war Dunkelgelb was airbrushed on. I used a set of fine-tipped tweezers to begin the mask removal process. Once the masks were entirely removed I was able to evaluate the scheme. Minimal overspray was found in certain areas where the mask lifted or was unable to fit snugly around rigid details. These areas of concern were quickly

dealt with by hand-painting the original camouflage colours. Additionally, tools and stowage items were hand-painted using various acrylics. The vehicle's identification markings at first were a combination of a single masked numeral and dry transfer balkenkreuz. I say “at first” because during the filter (overall colour-wash) application, a small issue arose. Before the weathering process commenced the model received a coat of X-22 Clear.

WINTER WEAR

To unify and tone down the vibrant colours, I applied an overall filter of Winsor & Newton Vandyke Brown. For my filters, the paint-tothinner ratio is nearly 10:1. At this point I noticed the balkenkreuze decals began to bubble. This issue was most likely attributed to their old age with the glue backing being weakened. Fear not, I used a set of photo-etched (PE) stencils from Alliance Model Works to replace them. Next, a

The hairspray technique was used on the exhaust. After applying several layers of rust tones the exhaust was covered in hairspray, followed by the base coat before removal

dark pin-wash was applied with a fine brush to pick out the small details and recesses. After allowing to dry for ten minutes, excess wash was removed with a damp brush. Chipped paint followed, with an artist’s sponge acting as the applicator for AMMO’s Chipping Color acrylic paint. A fine-tipped brush added elongated scratches and tied together areas. The same process was repeated using a light Dunkelgelb mixture to give the illusion of dimension. Creating subtle surface effects is important when modelling a vehicle with large, flat armour panels, which lack depth and variation. A technique I have found applicable for this scenario is 'speckling', a straightforward method of applying random specks of paint to a model's surface by using a flicking motion. I applied several coats of speckling with dark and light colours that varied in opacity. I prefer using oil paints for this process because they are very forgiving. Blemishes can be removed with damp brush

Adding mud takes several steps to build up texture and colours The first step begins by adding dry pigments directly to the surface and fixing them with Tamiya X-20A thinner

hours after application. The weather conditions during the Ardennes Offensive were less than ideal. Dramatic cycles of snow, rain, and fog hampered anyone’s ability to move and created poor visibility across the Belgian countryside. Roads turned to mud as vehicles churned across them in hope of surprising the Allies. With

this in mind I began to bring the Brummbär to Belgium. Working one surface at a time I piled Wilder pigments on dry and fixed them with drops from a pipette loaded with Tamiya X-20A thinner. The X-20A thinner permanently binds the pigments and allows them to adhere to the model's surface. The remaining sides of the vehicle and

road wheels were given the same treatment. Now that the texture was achieved I turned my attention to further blending the mud onto the vehicle using speckling. Once enough colour variation had been accomplished I hand brushed crevices with darker enamel colours and AMIG2015 Wet Effects to represent damp areas.

A thin wash of acrylic black paint was used to enhance the canvas cover’s shadows, giving them some added animation

Fine paint chips were created using an artist’s sponge. It’s a quick way to attack an otherwise tedious practice. Fine tuning can be accomplished with a brush after the initial chipping layer

V

The faint remnant of spilled fuel was achieved with AK’s Engine Oil enamel product. The author thinned the paint and applied several layers to build up opacity and shape. Vibrant rust colours, created with AK504 Dark Rust oil paint, are also visible on the spare worn road wheel

Stowage items were placed in accordance with period photographs of the vehicle so they looked natural and authentic

40

A light dusting of pigments was employed to blend stowage items in with the model and create an ‘operational’ look

30/01/2018 17:35

BUT NOT LEAST V LAST The vehicle I wanted to

represent had what looked like several stowage items on the rear deck and crates on the side of the vehicle. Coupled with the tarps and canvas covers, these items gave the vehicle a personality. Painting

commenced and I blocked in the main colours with acrylics from AMMO and Vallejo. Next, several darker and lighter shades were used to create shadows and highlights. The benefit of using acrylics as opposed to enamels is that this process moves fast; over the course

of an evening I was able to paint all of the items. An unforeseen gloss coat was formed when I used AMIG002 Olivgrün Opt.2 for some of the tarps, so to remedy the situation I airbrushed a localized coat of matt varnish. Problem solved!

A good way I have found to show worn edges is to drybrush dark grey. Therefore, most of the high traffic edges received a gentle drybrushing of AMIG033 Rubber & Tires. For dust, lighter shades of pigments were burnished onto horizontal surfaces

Another detail not to be forgotten were the periscopes, which were first painted in Lifecolor UA907 Burned Rust to represent the Bakelite housing followed by X-19 Smoke for the glass. Lastly, spilled oil stains were made by layering AK Interactive's AK084 Engine Oil around engine deck hatches.

CONCLUDING THOUGHTS

Through and through this was a fun build. Tamiya delivers another knockout that will surely please German armour fans and modellers who are looking for a stress-free build. Assembly was straightforward and created an opportunity to focus on the finish. I’m eyeing Tamiya’s Nashorn or Jagdpanzer L/70 for my next Pz.IV foray. Lastly, DN Model masks are a perfect complement if you want to replicate the unique late war disc scheme. I would like to thank Marcus Nicholls at TMMI for the opportunity to build this kit. ●

EDUARD, CZECH REPUBLIC

www.eduard.com • www.creativemodels.co.uk www.hannants.co.uk Tamiya's recently issued 1:32 Vought F4U-1D Corsair (featured this issue) is the 'target' for three photo-etched sets this month, with the cockpit, engine and exterior being the focus of attention. We are treated to a very realisticlooking instrument panel with raised, clear lenses over each dial, canopy-edge frames, rudder-pedal grips, oxygen bottle support and lots of data placards. The latter are particularly effective for increasing the realism in the fighter's 'office'. If you're contemplating your Corsair build with folded wings, the exterior set will be useful, providing some cabling (albeit in flat PE) for the fold area, plus other handy parts. If you don't want replace the whole engine with Eduard's 'Brassin' resin item, the PE engine set provides some handy upgrades for the kit's powerplant, including ignition cables, actuator detail for the cowling gills and new, double-layer lower cowling panels which are designed to be exhibited alongside the model, not fitted. 1:350 PHOTO-ETCHED DETAILS - RN Roma Pt.3 (53201) for Trumpeter - DKM Graf Zeppelin Pt.1 deck and cranes (53204) for Trumpeter 1:72 PHOTO-ETCHED DETAILS - Yak-130 details (73618) for Zvezda - Fortress Mk.III front interior (73616) for Airfix - Fortress Mk.III rear interior (73617) for Airfix - Fortress Mk.III exterior (72659) for Airfix - Curtiss P-40N Warhawk details (73619) for Special Hobby 1:48 PHOTO-ETCHED DETAILS - Beaufighter Mk.VI landing flaps (48938) for Tamiya - Beaufighter Mk.VI details (49868) for Tamiya - Petlyakov Pe-2 upgrade set (49867) for Eduard/Zvezda - L-29 Delfin upgrade set (49870) for Eduard 1:35 PHOTO-ETCHED DETAILS - MSTA S howitzer turret (36366) for Zvezda - MSTA S howitzer hull (36367) for Zvezda - MSTA S howitzer fenders (36368) for Zvezda - T-54 details (36372) for MiniArt - Soviet WWII flags steel (36370) - Tie-downs and straps German steel (36369) 1:32 PHOTO-ETCHED DETAILS - F4U-1D interior (32915) for Tamiya - F4U-1D exterior (32912) for Tamiya - F4U-1D engine (32413) for Tamiya - I-16 Type 24 (32919) for ICM - Fw190A-8 landing flaps (32414) for Revell - Fw190A-8 engine (32415) for Revell - Fw190A-8 exterior (32416) for Revell - Fw190A-8/R-11 details (32916) for Revell - Fw190A-8 seatbelts (33179) Eduard 1:72 BRASSIN - GBU-11 (672161) 1:48 BRASSIN - Fw190A-3 cockpit (648357) for Eduard - Fw190A propeller (648366) for Eduard - Fw190A-2 undercarriage legs bronze (648379) for Eduard - Brimstone w/AGML III rack (648339) - BRU-57A rack (648358) 1:48 BRASSIN BIG SIN - Fw190A-4 advanced (64837) for Eduard - Bf109F w/early seat essential (64835) for Eduard - Bf109F essential (64838) for Eduard (pictured right) - SE.5a Hispano Suiza w/2 blade propeller (64833) for Eduard - SE.5a Hispano Suiza w/4 blade propeller (64834) for Eduard - GBU-43/B MOAB (648348) 1:32 BRASSIN - Spitfire Mk.IXc cockpit (632111) for Revell

Featured here is Eduard’s Brassin ‘BIG SIN’ set (64838) for the company’s own 1:48 Messerschmitt Bf109F, providing a whole new cockpit, main wheels, rudder, elevators and ailerons plus Pitot tubes. There is some fantastic detail in the resin parts and the photo-etched parts provide pre-coloured instrument panels, seat harnesses and more. Quite a lot of extra work to install, but the results can be magnificent.

EDUARD, CZECH REPUBLIC

L-29 DELFÍN CZECHOSLOVAK JET TRAINER/LIGHT ATTACK AIRCRAFT www.eduard.com www.creativemodels.co.uk SCALE 1:48 MATERIALS; IM, PE, WS, PCM ITEM NO.8099 Eduard’s kit of the interesting (if not attractive) L-29 Delfín trainer/light attack jet makes use of the excellent sprue parts from AMK’s 2013 release. The mouldings are very slick and sport recessed panel lines which, while ever so slightly too bold, are well within acceptable limits. The cockpit is in tub-form to which Eduard have added pre-coloured photo-etched console faces, rudder bars and hand-controls. The plastic seat parts get pre-finished PE seat pads and harnesses too, considerably improving their appearance and you can swap them out completely with resin items form Quickboost should you wish. To sharpen up the instrument panels, Eduard include their multi-layered designs, which offer a very three-dimensional effect, with a little extra work in paring back the moulded detail. Markings for two Czech machines (1969-70 and 1993) are provided, plus a US-based training machine and an Egyptian Air Force jet in camouflage, which is arguably the most interesting.

AMK, MACAU/CHINA

IAI KFIR C2/C7 www.amkhobby.com SCALE: 1:48 MATERIALS; IM, WS ITEM NO.88001-A The Kfir is a license-built, modified version of the Dassault Mirage 5 that utilised new avionics and a license-built J79 engine. It entered service in 1975 and its first combat took place in November 1977 during a strike on a training camp in Lebanon. AMK’s new kit comes in a small box but is packed with detail, from a very neat cockpit to the extensive underwing ordnance that is included in the box. Parts breakdown is keep to a sensible level and the kit should build up quickly, the only tweezer-sized bits being the multiple air-scoops and sensors on the dorsal and ventral areas. As always, choose which version you’re going to make before you start construction, because some small modifications and alternative parts are needed during assembly - these are clearly called out as you progress. The kit comes with fabulous markings-options for Colombian, Ecuadorian and Sri Lankan air forces plus decals for IAF and American ATAC machines. The Ecuadorian camouflage is perhaps the most interesting, although the Sri Lankan jet is also quite appealing in a more subtle way, in its pale grey. An impressive production with heaps of parts in the box.

A slightly obscure aircraft perhaps, but still an interesting subject

A classic Cold War jet with some appealing markings options

Panel lines a tiny bit more prominent than Eduard’s own standard

FINE MOLDS, JAPAN

F-14A TOMCAT www.finemolds.co.jp SCALE: 1:72 MATERIALS: IM, WS ITEM NO.FP30 The Tomcat has been quite a ‘thing’ over the last year, with Tamiya’s 1:48 release and another on the way from AMK. Fine Molds had been issuing their delightful 1:72 offering as a cover-mounted gift in partby-part form on the Japanese ‘Model Graphix’ magazine and now, much to the delight of jet modellers, it is available in one box as a complete kit. It’s a delicious production with a very decent cockpit; side consoles have raised detail onto which decals are applied for the fine detail and markings. The seats are good too, although you’ll need to source your own seat harnesses as none are provided. A very nice touch and unusual for this scale is a set of open avionics bays along the forward fuselage, plus the hatch for the M61 Vulcan 20mm machine gun, a miniature of which is supplied. The detail throughout this kit is phenomenal; even the engine intake fans come in two layers with separately moulded spinner bosses and parts for ‘contracted’ or ‘dilated’ engine nozzles are included. The outer wings can be fitted in the swept or extended position but they are not mechanically linked, the change is done manually. A really lovely production with some neat touches. Open avionics bays, fine airframe detail, radar inside nosecone No weapons included and you’ll need to source your own seat harnesses

MARK I MODELS, CZECH REPUBLIC

ZEPPELIN LZ127 www.4pluspublications.com SCALE: 1:720 MATERIALS: IM, WS ITEM NO.MKM720-05 This is a limited run kit and as such will require some modelling skills to complete to a high level, but the subject is fascinating and Mark I Models must be applauded for its release. It depicts Graf Zeppelin D-LZ127 as she appeared from 1928 right through to 1937 and includes decals for four voyages within Germany, to the Americas and around the world. The body comes in two longitudinal halves to which are fitted the engine pods and tail fins, the latter also moulded in two halves. A simple plinth-type base is provided to support the model once finished. A few options are included; the deeper tail fins used on a couple of the airship’s incarnations represented, as are two or fourbladed propellers, again, for the differing variants. 1:720 is an extremely small scale, so the engine pod struts are inevitably a little too heavy, but not tragically so and will look okay without modification; they could be replaced with thin plastic strip for a more delicate, scalelike effect. The body exhibits a realistic depiction of the internal structure, as do the fins. A very charismatic subject that, whilst small, captures the look of this famous airship very well Some care will be needed when fitting the engine struts TMMI 269 March 2018

ICM, UKRAINE

SD.KFZ.223 GERMAN RADIO COMMUNICATION VEHICLE www.icm.co.ua SCALE: 1:48 MATERIALS: IM, PE, SVT, WS ITEM NO.48192 The Sd.Kfz223 is the radio car variant of the ‘222 and utilised the multi-faceted hull design that was such a distinctive feature of these 1930s designs. Interestingly, the chassis came from the Horch 801, another iconic WW2 German vehicle. ICM’s kit is based on their 2007 Sd.Kfz.222 release, with new parts for the smaller turret and hull top-plate, plus frametype radio aerial and its struts. The model comes with a very good depiction of the MG34 that sits in the defensive turret, which itself is provided with a photo-etched metal screen, and another is included for the top plate too. A set of wheels and tyres moulded in kit plastic will be found on the sprues and a quartet in vinyl is also provided, which we are directed to use for this model. They are very slightly smaller with marginally better detail, but otherwise we could see any major differences. Four markings-options are offered; two in Panzergrau (France 1940 and Ukraine 1941) plus a winter whitewashed vehicle in Russia 1942 and also based in Russia 1942, a ‘223 in overall Dunkelgelb (dark yellow). Fantastic subject that’s ideal to sit alongside 1:48 Luftwaffe models. Great detail all around Vinyl tyres can perish over time

PETLYAKOV PE-2 PESHKA LIMITED EDITION www.eduard.com www.creativemodels.co.uk SCALE 1:48 MATERIALS; IM, R, PE, WS, PCM ITEM NO.11112 In the box here we have a limited edition re-box of Zvezda’s superb 1:48 Petlyakov Pe-2 light bomber, which was a staggeringly well detail model upon its release in 2015. Eduard spotted the brilliance of this model too, and have added a clutch of their own goodies to make it even better. The bag of resin upgrades includes new main and tail wheels with fantastic detail and weighted flatspots and new propeller blades and spinner bosses are provided too, presumably for improved accuracy. Two photo-etched frets are provided that carry instrument panel faces and seat harnesses (pre-coloured) plus engine intake screens and more in plain brass. A small but packed sheet of pre-cut, self-adhesive masks is included, which should significantly ease the painting of the multi-panelled canopy and the wheels. Five decal options (printed in Italy by Cartograf, naturally) offer some colourful schemes for Pe-2s operating over the Eastern Front from 1943 to 1945 and all but one spot the classic three-tone camouflage of A-21m Brown, A-24m Green, A-32m Grey and A-28m Blue. Fantastic subject and a remarkable plastic kit, subtly augmented with top quality resin, brass and decals Loads of detail, so not a weekend project!

REVELL, USA

CHASE ELLIOTT MAPA AUTO PARTS CHEVY SS www.revell.com SCALE 1:24 MATERIALS; IM, SVT, WS ITEM NO.85-4222 We are more used to seeing US-made NASCAR kits in the scale of 1:25, but this new release from Revell’s US division is produced in the far more common 1:24; we are not sure why, but it fits better with Tamiya’s Sports Car Series so it’s fine by us! In the box we have ten sprues of white plastic, plus the bodyshell, chassis/ underpanel and clear window parts. The latter are bagged individually and come with their frames pre-painted. It’s very neatly done and will save the modeller considerable time and aggravation. The kit comes with a very nicely appointed V8 engine and gearbox, which can remain viewable after construction thanks to the separately moulded bonnet (hood) part. The cabin interior has plenty of detail, with a full rollcage, dashboard and other components and all the modeller needs to add is some cabling, if they have the references plus the desire to do so. One very nice touch which has gone out of style in other makers’ kits is the inclusion of a driver figure. It’s a generic set of parts but should add a little human scale to the model. Gorgeous slick vinyl tyres and a superb set of glossy decals complete this very attractive production. Remarkably good detail inside and out, with some refined mouldings. Driver figure is a real plus Grey plastic might be easier to work with, on a practical level

EDUARD, CZECH REPUBLIC

MESSERSCHMITT BF109E-3 PROFIPACK www.eduard.com www.creativemodels.co.uk SCALE 1:48 MATERIALS; IM, PE, WS, PCM ITEM NO.8262 Eduard’s 1:48 Bf109E-3 was released around six years ago and it is a superb little kit. It comes with a very well detailed 1:48 replica of a DB605 engine but the cowling can be cemented shut for those who prefer to preserve the outline of the airframe but unlike Tamiya’s new Bf109G-6, this is an either/or option. The cockpit is incredibly well appointed, with photo-etched parts provided for the more delicate components and Eduard’s trademark layered instrument panel as the icing on the cake. Also unlike Tamiya’s recent Messerschmitt, Eduard’s airframe is covered with lines of ultra fine rivets, the lack of which on Tamiya’s release was lamented by some. They do look very good and can be accentuated with a contrasting colour-wash or left untreated according to taste. The rudder, main wing flaps, ailerons and leading-edge slats are all individually moulded and as such can be fitted in the drooped/ deployed position if desired. The included pre-cut canopy masks will be an absolute boon for the tiny clear parts of a ‘109. Five decal options are provided, varied enough to make the purchase of more than one kit entirely justifiable. A terrific kit of the earlywar variant of the Bf109; Battle of Britain decal options are provided A relatively high parts-count make this a kit for someone with a few kits’ experience TMMI 269 March 2018

T

he 1983 Formula 1 season was fiercely contested with eight different winners across fifteen races, plus one, the 'Race of Champions' held out of the league. It was marked by a redefinition of the technical regulations that banned ground-effect cars since 1979 which had the effect of limiting the aerodynamic grip of the cars. Some were almost flat-bottomed with radiators mounted far back, such as the Gordon Murray-designed Brabham BT52 but also the Tyrrell 012 and the

52

Williams FW08C. Beemax is a recently founded Chinese manufacturer from Macau, and they love motorsport. Their kits are the products of a cooperation with Aoshima; we don't know the exact nature of that, but it does not matter. The 1:20 production of the '83 BT52 kit is impressive, with high quality mouldings. The body is formed in one piece in a high-grade white plastic. The internal areas of the car are nicely reproduced, from the carbon chassis to the BMW four-cylinder engine. The

kit depicts the version that ran at the 1983 Monaco GP which is distinguished by a different engine cover, leaving the air intake on the outside and by a slightly different livery with the race number on the left side of the front wing and a black rear wing, instead of the usual blue. However, the decal sheet offers both options. The decals are designed to allow completely the whole colour scheme on a plain white base. The first test-fitting confirmed the good quality of the kit. The body rests on the

chassis but the nose points up a little bit. The latter could be glued down onto the wing to make a perfect joint, but that would eliminate the possibility of removing the body to view the engine. To rectify this, I fabricated a nose clip by sticking an Evergreen tube between the two original tubes and drilling a hole between the two lugs of the front wing. Then I used a screw from a motorcycle 1:12 kit to screw the nose to the flap. The nose came perfectly in contact with the fin and the body remained removable.

A test-assembly proved that the chassis fitted together perfectly

Still uncemented, it appears that the nose tends to point upwards, when not joined to the front wing

A hole was drilled in the front wing and a Tamiya 1:12 motorcycle kit screw was used to hold the body to the nose

The engine is an excellent replica of the real BMW unit. The upper part was painted with Tamiya XF-28 Dark Copper; ignition cables were also added The gearbox was painted Gun Metal which contrasted better with the black colour-wash applied in the recessed detail. The rear suspension is very well detailed and the wing struts received a nice photo-etched part, plus carbon-fibre decals

The exhausts are very well reproduced but require a meticulous assembly. The thermal protection under the exhaust needs to be trimmed in order for the pipework to be fitted

AREAS V MECHANICAL Reassured after the

test-fitting I started with the engine. Beemax does not make it easy for those of who are used to using Tamiya paints; the colour references are for Mr Color products. In addition, the instructions are a bit vague on painting parts and the application of decals; they recommend painting the gearbox in matt black but it is better to use a mixture of Tamiya Gun Metal and Flat Black.

The rear wing struts received two carbon-fibre decals as well as mounting plates in photo-etched metal, from the detail set released by Beemax for this kit. The top of the engine was not painted with the gold/silver mixture recommended by the instructions, but with XF-28 Dark Copper which is more realistic. I added the ignition circuit using Model Factory Hiro tubing; Tamiya has just released a range of black vinyl tubes that are

also very good. Decals are provided for the heads of the cylinder head, but alas I damaged one of them with too much decal solvent. It was so wrinkled that I could not apply it, so I had to paint the 'BMW MPower' bands and logo by hand in Silver Model Master. The assembly of the rear suspension posed no problem; only the fixing of the hubs required a little adjustment by opening out the end clamps that snap onto the hub.

The detail set provides two types of carbon-fibre for the chassis: a grey-black for the front part and a more typical Kevlar for the rear part. The use of solvent and a hairdryer are very useful for the application of decals

The rims of the undertray in front of the radiators received the blue decals of the bodywork before being varnished, then the rest of the 'tray was covered with carbon-fibre transfers

54

Harnesses are included in the additional Beemax set. The blue fabric straps are very thin and exactly the right width for photo-etched hardware

The rear part of the chassis was lined with Bare Metal Foil Aluminium the coating being trimmed around the ribs of the chassis

The decals for the bodywork are of excellent quality and react very well to the decal softeners. In addition, the blue corresponds well to the original Brabham colour

FINISHING THE CHASSIS

The chassis was primed with Citadel black then painted in Humbrol gloss black in anticipation of its covering with the carbon-fibre decals from the detail set. The markings were applied with solvents, in my case Tamiya X-20A thinner, but this can leave some marks, which is why I apply it under the decal rather than on it; it works just as well. The CF decal panels provided fitted exactly on the parts to be covered. The chassis is also distinguished by riveting worthy of a tank from the Great War and particular attention is required to ensure the decal conforms to the raised details. I used a hair dryer to accelerate this process. I found that the bronze tint of the fuel tank decals was a bit too flashy, so to mitigate the effect, I sprayed a thin layer of X-19 Smoke over those decals. In some references photos, we can see that rivets are silver, not black. Not knowing which had to be repainted, I preferred to leave them all black. Finally, a coat of Tamiya TS-80 Flat Clear was applied. The rear of the chassis was covered with Bare-Metal

Foil Aluminium, to reproducing the thermal protection film. A rectangle of this material was applied over the whole area, then firmly pressed down with a fingertip, the excess then trimmed away with a sharp blade. The visible parts of the underpanel were completely covered with carbon-fibre decals. Before applying the black undercoat, it was first necessary to paint the edges of the air intakes white to later apply the blue translucent decals. The white was then masked off and the rest of the underpanel painted gloss black. Once the solid colours are on, it was the turn of the blue decals, which in turn were varnished with polyurethane. The varnish was masked and the rest of the underpanel receives a coat of satin varnish.

Stencils are provided for painting the race numbers on the radiators. It's a much more practical and realistic solution than decals

The radiators were given a light patination using black Tamiya Panel Line Accent Color

BODY AND COCKPIT

Some light moulding joints must be removed from the body parts first. I opted for windscreen part 'J1' which was cemented in place before painting to avoid a visible joint and to make is easier to apply the red lines that round around the edge. The rear wing

U

Stencils are also provided for tyre markings. They need to be slightly rounded to fit over the tire sidewalls

Once finished, the engine compartment is particularly congested. We can see the thermal protection panels in photo-etched metal around the exhausts

V was fully assembled before

painting and all body parts were degreased before being primed in white and then painted with Tamiya TS-26 Pure White. At the Monaco GP, the rear wing was black. Maybe Brabham did not have time to paint it blue before the race? Beemax still provides decals for a blue fin however. To facilitate the application of the 'Parmalat' logo on the wing, I recommend trimming off the carrier film from the white letters. I was a little apprehensive about the application of the decals on the prominent bumps of the nose, but they softened and conformed very easily without tearing.

GENERAL ASSEMBLY

Contrary to what is indicated in the instructions, the front shock absorbers were cemented directly to the underpanel before fixing the chassis in place. Once the latter is secured, the suspension bars (parts F6 and F7) were cemented to the damper heads. Again, at this stage of the assembly, the instructions are not very clear but it is necessary to place the steering bar (E1)

over the 'triangles' (F12). The seat is then cemented into the chassis, with no placement guide, by the way. As for the rear hubs, you have to open out the suspension brackets in order to fix the front hubs properly. The triangular layout of the radiators with the race numbers painted directly on them is characteristic of this car. Beemax reproduces the entire cooling system and if one has purchased their detail set too, it has photo-etched faces for the radiator matrices. I wasn't convinced that they were any better than the kit parts, so I did not use them. On the other hand, the stencils for painting the race numbers are very useful. The radiators were painted with Tamiya X-32 Titanium Silver and were patinated with a black colour-wash in the hollows. It is better to paint the race number after the 'wash because the solvent can bring the 'aluminium' paint particles from the X-32 up through the blue. The tyres are beautifully moulded and have correctly raised detail on their sidewalls.

The airbox is also covered with carbon-fibre decal. A BMW decal is provided for the rocker cover

The cockpit is faithfully reproduced. The gearshift linkage is provided as a single part that runs from the cockpit to the gearbox

The brake disks receive rotor faces in photo-etched metal for enhanced realism. Note the authentic-looking seat harnesses, supplied with the kit

BT52 kit, which sports a good level of detail for all parts of the car...

The treads were sanded but it appeared that the composition of Beemax tyres must be different to those from Tamiya or Ebbro because the synthetic rubber didn't behave in the same manner; in Formula 1, we would talk about 'graining'. In short, sanding tyres requires a little more effort than usual. The markings were painted with Tamiya white primer and the help of a stencil also provided in the Beemax detail set.

of the car. The instructions sometimes lacked clarity and precision and you will have to buy separately the additional set of details which was necessary to get the result seen here. And in turn, this significantly extended the time needed to complete the

model. Criticisms aside, the completed model is a credit to this beautiful F1 car from the 1980s. Fans are sure to appreciate just as much the kit of version B, the one which Ayrton Senna piloted for his first tests in Formula 1... ●

KIT PREVIEW EDUARD ROYAL CLASS 1:48 FOCKE-WULF FW190A EARLY VERSIONS DUAL COMBO ● KIT NO.R0016

Eduard’s special ‘Royal Class’ line has grown steadily over the years, with some very attractive presentations and the latest in the series is every bit as appealing as the others...

IT TAKES TWO, BABY!

I

t’s the Fw190A ‘early versions’, which Eduard recently re-tooled their to create an easier to build kit that replaces their original model of the fighter. This was very highly detailed production with a fantastic open engine cowling and fuselage gun bay, but was quite challenging to construct. The new kit is what we find here, which is very good news indeed. The detail that is rendered on this model’s airframe is staggering, comprising ultra-fine lines

of rivets with recessed panel boundaries and access ports, creating a subtle matrix over the model that gives it a wonderfully engaging look, although great care must be taken during assembly not to flood the rivets and lines with cement or sand them off during join line clean-up. In this ‘Dual Combo’ production we have two complete kits, each provided with photo-etched details, resin main undercarriage wheels and pre-cut masking sets. For one of the versions (an Fw190A-4 ‘Trop’, in Libya, 1942) there’s also a new engine cowling with a large air filter in resin to replaced the styrene kit moulding. The model(s) comes with a comprehensive cockpit that depicts the Focke-Wulf’s ‘office’ with great finesse. A choice of moulded and PE rudder pedals are provided, with pre-coloured harnesses for the seat, a layered instrument panel with what appear to be raised dial lenses and even photo-etched control levers, which are ultra delicate and best added once the rest of the cockpit is done. The real bonus with this

kit are the decals. No less than fourteen options are provided for the two models in the box and they are all interesting schemes. They are printed by Cartograf of Italy of course and are impeccable in quality. The ‘Trop’ test version mentioned earlier is perhaps the oddest; the Fw190 looks a little bizarre in the RLM79 Sandgelb RLM78 Himmelblau scheme, something we are more accustomed to see on a Bf109, but it looks quite attractive all the same. The others offer combinations of more commonly seen RLM74/75/76 colours, plus a whitewashed machine and the unusual green/ brown aircraft of Major H von Bonin as deployed in the Soviet Union, 1943. A fantastic production from Eduard with some marvellous decal options for a superb new Fw190A kit, times-two. What’s not to love? Oh, and there’s a beer glass in the box too - even better! ● AVAILABILITY; Eduard models and accessories are widely available from good model shops and online. www.creativemodels.co.uk www.eduard.com

The special inclusion with this Royal Class kit is this very nicely made beer glass

They come in six grits (180/240/400/800/1200) and a buffer (3,000/12,000 grit) and are uniquely shaped to accommodate all your fine sanding scenarios. They are made from the same high quality materials as our Modellers Sanders and are available in packs of six. Thinny Sponges Our Thinny Sponges are designed to compliment our Thinny Stick range. They come in one grit 220, but being a softer sponge it’s equivalent to nearly a 300 grit like the full size Ultimate Modellers Sanders. This will prove to be the go to sander on your bench.

MURRAY R BARBER www.crecy.co.uk The V2 (Vergeltungswaffen; 'Vengeance Weapon') ballistic missile is still a subject that fascinates people to this day, perhaps because it was such a sinister, advanced weapon against which there was virtually no defence, other than just being lucky enough to not be underneath one. It is also a very 'modelable' subject with several kits on offer to the kit-building enthusiast. This new title comprises an absolute treasuretrove of information about the missile, its development and the support vehicles required to transport and erect it, and is an invaluable source of references for anyone building a model.

NEW in the ‘HOW TO BUILD...’ series NEW How to Build... TAMIYA 1:32 F4U-1A and F4U-1D CORSAIR When Tamiya released their 1:32 scale Spitfire Mk.IXc in 2009, they set a new standard for plastic model kits. Each model since then has seen incremental improvements. Just when you think the series can’t get any better, Tamiya goes and proves you wrong. Their 1:32 scale Birdcage Corsair was released in mid-2013. This was an outstanding kit in every respect. Tamiya expanded their 1:32 scale Corsair family with an F4U-1A in late 2014. This kit included several new sprues and offered a wider range of camouflage and marking possibilities. Tamiya has now completed the -1 trio with their new 1:32 scale F4U-1D Corsair. Once again, this kit includes a significant number of brand new sprues to depict the unique attributes of this variant. We can also marvel at the kit’s subtle surface textures, high level of detail, clever parts breakdown and accuracy. In this new book, we provide an exhaustive step-by-step illustrated guide to building and detailing the 1:32 scale F4U-1D and F4U-1A, offering plenty of inspiration with two different configurations and colour schemes. We have also a bonus Chapter on building Tamiya’s 1:48 scale Corsair family, offer some tips for painting pilot figures and include a helpful walk around of a Corsair under restoration.

The Editor’s Page... Tamiya’s classic 1972 1:25 Centurion is back, this time with RC gear!

A

recent Tamiya release that came somewhat out of left-field is the re-issue of the absolutely classic 1:25 Centurion Mk.III British Battle Tank This kit is always welcome back, and despite it being only six years younger than me, it still looks solid and impressive. Unlike me. What’s new about this release though is the inclusion of a ACTCOM 2.4GHz proportional radio control system that gives the model full driving controls and turret rotation. The receiver also incorporates the motor control system and is thus ultra compact. The tracks come fully built up and just need a dusting with weathering pigments to bring to life. The model is a bit of an oddity perhaps, but I love it and it’s packed with classic Tamiya character. Also, at around £230, the kit is significantly less expensive than any of Tamiya’s 1:16 RC tanks, offering the modeller a more affordable way into radio control tank driving. ●

DELUXE MATERIALS LIQUID GRAVITY www.deluxematerials.com If you’re a fan of scale model jet fighters – and the notoriously tail-heavy F7F Tigercat – you’ll know how frustrating it can be trying to find enough weight to keep the nosewheel in contact with the ground. Deluxe Materials’ ‘Liquid Gravity’ comprises thousands of tiny steel pellets that can literally be poured into cavities within the nose, fuselage or anywhere forward of the fulcrum to keep things level. And being steel rather than lead, there is minimal toxicity for safe handling. A very useful product.
